To stockpile 72 hours of supplies

..in case of disaster or attack. A new preparedness strategy inspired by Nordic countries and Germany, who already do this.

Is this something you already do, or will do?

Surely most households have at least three days supply of some sort of food and essentials, it's hardly stockpiling.

I don't buy bottled water very much so would be affected if supplies went off suddenly.

AirborneElephant · 27/03/2025 13:29

No, not in case of attack. I do always have at least a few weeks food and essentials in the house in case of supply disruptions especially after Covid but I don’t stockpile anything, just buy at a normal rate and use it on a FIFO basis. I’d be very surprised if most people couldn’t do three days!

MrsMitford3 · 27/03/2025 13:32

I could def do more than 3 days/weeks but I have a pantry and a full freezer so my sister always says if anything goes wrong she is heading straight to me!!

*Not for any disaster preparedness-just how I like it.
Get anxious if I am running low.
If I used the back stock then I get another to replace it.

In one of the Nordic countries it’s at least a week of supplies.

I am not normally someone who would be overly worried but based on reading this yesterday I impulse bought some emergency long life food supplies and a solar charger and water purifying tablets. No harm having it there just in case.

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 13:36

Psha - I keep enough for 74 hours, so there! Take that, amateurs!

loropianalover · 27/03/2025 13:36

If there ever was a serious disaster or attack I dare say the issue would not be resolved/Waitrose would not be fully stocked again after 72hrs.

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 13:37

eats 3 oatcakes, thereby reducing preparedness by 25 minutes

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 13:38

Also I have 2 edible cats 👀

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 27/03/2025 13:39

I think it makes sense. DH is a bit of a hoarder anyway so we have tins and tins of stuff in our larder. But water or water purifying tablets is a good shout

CatsChin · 27/03/2025 13:39

I've got mounjaro in, so I can stab everyone then we won't need food, so can just go and lap up some puddles.

Then again, they are not just talking about food but also things like cash, a radio, medicine etc.

Many people don't have that in stock - that is why the guidance is being issued.

Crazyworldmum · 27/03/2025 13:41

Portuguese people where told the same this week 🤷🏻‍♀️

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 27/03/2025 13:42

It's a nice idea but I simply don't have space to keep 15 bottle of wine in my house.

Differentstarts · 27/03/2025 13:42

I usually have about 2 weeks if not more of food in the house if absolutely needed it might be some random combinations by the end but we would survive. It's not preparation for disaster its more to cover illness. I never let the car fall below a 1/4 of a tank just in case we need to do emergency hospital runs. Water might be an issue but I am on the priority list so would hopefully be sorted quite quickly.

I do think a lot of people forget water.

Medicine I'd be screwed as I'm only allowed a week at a time.

The idea behind the 72 hours (and it’s something many countries encourage) is so that the emergency services can focus on vulnerable people for the initial phase of the emergency. Able-bodied, fit, uninjured younger people can sort themselves out while people in emergency services can manage the emergency.

After that, there should be some order of some kind in most emergencies.

I just did emergency/disaster management training so I’ll be hauled in to help, and fed and watered if something happens.

Durr - all you need is one really big bottle of 60% proof gin

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 13:49

Wetherspoons is a bit like cockroaches - I'll be going there for my boneless chicken baskets during the nuclear winter.

WearyAuldWumman · 27/03/2025 13:51

I used to stockpile when my husband was still alive. He was disabled, so if anything had happened to me, he'd have been stuck.

Now that I'm on my own, I've run down my stockpile to free up space.

I’d imagine that there are people who go to a supermarket daily to pick up stuff like a ready meal.

I have more than 72 hours but I’m assuming that there would be electricity or gas to cook with.
