To stockpile 72 hours of supplies

..in case of disaster or attack. A new preparedness strategy inspired by Nordic countries and Germany, who already do this.

Is this something you already do, or will do?

I am not normally someone who would be overly worried but based on reading this yesterday I impulse bought some emergency long life food supplies and a solar charger and water purifying tablets. No harm having it there just in case.

I have things on my roof called solar panels. Come the apolcaypse, I'm going to be popular. We'll be fine as long as the apolcaypse is planned in the summer.

In all seriousness given how people went mental a fews back when KFC was closed across the country for a few days and how much people go nuts when the supermarkets close at Easter and Christmas, I think anything longer than three days and we will be truly fucked. People will be roasting dogs in the street.

Awakeatnite · 27/03/2025 14:15

I tried buying tins of food in the past for this situation but I just ended up eating them when I got peckish, I have little self control.
I don’t think I would survive if the shops stopped delivering for more than a week

Haveanaiceday · 27/03/2025 14:16

We do normally have plenty of loo roll here since Covid.

Who has less than 3 days supplies in?????
Edit other than utterly skint people who are forced to live hand to mouth

Edited

People who can't be arsed to shop and just buy what they need on the way home from work . . .😬

Do you have other things like candles, batteries, a torch, water, medicine etc? It’s not just food.

Water or water purifying tablets is way more important than food. Depending on your general health and age etc, you will likely die or start to get organ failure after three days without water. The average human can go for a surprisingly long time without food.

Yeah there is not a lot of vitamins in wine. That is why you have to drink quite a lot.

That is why I drink gin, amazing how much vit c is in a slice of lemon.

You stockpiled enough to last 5+ years?!?

No

FofB · 27/03/2025 14:19

Yes, pretty ready. I was prepped for the Beast from the East and because of the way it hit our village and where our house is, couldn't get out for about 4 days. The back door was totally covered with a snowdrift and much to my kids delight, we had to dig our way out to get to the chickens. We also have regular power cuts, so it's useful to have stuff to hand. I bought extra bread for us and our elderly neighbours and stored it in the boot of the car as it was so cold. I felt like a right Del Boy fetching bread from my car boot.

If the electricity went off for 3 days you'd have to eat the contents of the fridge and freezer first. We would have some, er, interesting meals after a while.

Note to self: must get more gas canisters for the camping stove.

Remember to cook outside. I'm sure you know! But people die of CO poisoning from camping stoves inside when power goes out.

dannyufcfan · 27/03/2025 14:20

Nope, couldn't be arsed doing that.

RiversofOtter5 · 27/03/2025 14:20

Cats should be slow cooked for a long time at low temperature to be palatable.

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 14:21

I have lots of tins of chickpeas, but without power for my blender I'll need to trample my hummus with my feet. So I keep extra foot sanitiser in my larder.

Reoa · 27/03/2025 14:21

I have supplies, started because I live in a fairly remote area of highlands and have been snowed in, power off, water off and it’s not the fastest to get it fixed, but even when I move to a city will probably do the same. Just takes the urgh out of inconviences like the above

Yes, I stockpiled loo roll too. I have loads of things like batteries and odds and ends. I don't have bottled water at the moment.

However why is this suddenly so urgent?

I sleep with mine under my pillow for a sous-vide effect.

It’s not just about war. Or Russia.

It could be extreme weather related, outages, cyber attacks, dangerous pathogens etc.

This is a good brochure, if you would like to read more.

That is a really useful leaflet, thank you. I wish the UK was as organised, but local communities could set up their own version of this.

Shetlands · 27/03/2025 14:23

There are plenty of farms nearby where I could get eggs, milk and vegetables. I have some fast flowing streams within walking distance, a woodburner and a stack of logs. I could probably survive for a while without electricity, shops or tap water.

GuineaHyggaeReturnsWheeking · 27/03/2025 14:23

I have three days worth of bottled water in storage. My sister had a pipe burst one summer and it wasn't repaired for days. You never know. I have matches, and a candle. I keep my phone and tablet charged up. That's about it though.

MrsMitford3 · 27/03/2025 14:24

Not that you'd necessarily get notice but I used to live where there were hurricanes so we always filled the bath so we would have water to flush the loo if the water was cut off, and for washing.

Chiseltip · 27/03/2025 14:24

It's to prevent the "72 hour rule" from kicking in.

It's accepted by Emergency Planning Ops that after 72 hours without food/water, perfectly ordinary, civilised, law abiding citizens, WILL begin to kill eachother to get access to supplies.

Also, it seems THEY know something WE don't.

Wonder what is about to happen . . .🤔

OneTC · 27/03/2025 14:25

If you're worried enough to prep then 72 hours worth feels incredibly underprepared and pointless in the event you ever needed it.

What !!! That's only 3 days FFS!!!

IMO you'd have to be that way inclined to kill someone for food after only 3 days.

Me!
Not on the bread line, can afford to shop in waitrose (tho usually at aldi).

I generally use fresh ingredients, I eat mainly salad and veg, DH likes stodge, DS eats a specific four meal rotation and I have never menu planned in my life and I'm 47.

Sure I might do a big shop to last a week, but I don't plan and I always add things as the week goes on. I don't buy big bags of pasta and quite often run out of loo roll and milk!

Hopefully we will be saved by our chickens who lay eggs everyday!
