To stockpile 72 hours of supplies

..in case of disaster or attack. A new preparedness strategy inspired by Nordic countries and Germany, who already do this.

Is this something you already do, or will do?

This is the list of food in the leaflet from our government recommendations, if anyone is interested. Would be interesting to read other countries advise.

WTH is cheese in a tube? Sounds rank 🥴

Quoted wrong post.

Edited

It’s like primula cheese. It’s not rank. It only keeps for a very long time and doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge when unopened. There are many different types of soft/creme cheese and they are very tasty.

Phone torches are not that good in compleat darkness, plus they drain the battery very quickly.

We do not live in complete darkness in the UK even in winter. People went to bed early in winter - if for no other reason than it was warm!

Breadcat24 · 27/03/2025 17:16

@Gwenhwyfar You have just prompted me to make yoghurt! Thank you!
Scald milk, cool to about body temp put in soup thermos. Add culture sachet or bit spoon of live yoghurt. Wait overnight. viola!
Could also make flatbread to cook on our bbqs with yoghurt and sr flour.
So add some UHT milk to your stockpile

RobertaFirmino · 27/03/2025 17:17

Water is the crucial thing to have, in case of a contaminated supply. Even OOD water is fine to boil for handwashing. Drinking water is absolutely essential though and I'd urge anyone beginning a stockpile to make it their first purchase.

Note to self: must get a flint and a bag of tinder.

Go on a foraging course. This way you can poison the competition.

lifeonmars100 · 27/03/2025 17:19

I loathe food shopping and am on quite a tight budget so I have always menu planned, batch cooked and try to make sure I have around 7 days worth of food in.Might panic buy some biscuits and chocolate in response to this! I would be screwed if the water went off as I never buy the bottled stuff, too heavy and too costly.

RobertaFirmino · 27/03/2025 17:21

Also, if there's no water supply then you cannot flush the loo. For the sake of health and safety, you'll need to crap in a bag that can be tied up and disposed of immediately. A roll of pedal bin liners in your stash is probably a good plan.

No need to panic buy anything. Just buy something small extra everytime you shop.

Or some cat sand in the bag.

That would be a fun day.

I was joking about panic buying, hence the exclamation mark.

Mushroom poisoning is brutal. Maybe welcome diversion form Armageddon 🤔

I do think a lot of people forget water.

You can easily fill buckets and big pots with water and drink that for 3 days.
It is very unlikely that water supply would be cut without a warning.
Tbh for three days you could survive with 1l per person. You would be dyhadrated but not dead.

RedToothBrush · 27/03/2025 17:27

When there is a total collapse in society and anarchy reigns, how do you intend to defend your food stockpiles from raiders? Those generators are great but if you have lights on after dark, wooosh you become a target for the desperate roaming boards looking for a takeaway.

Do you have a defensive plan? Ideally you need to decamp a number of households to the most defensible /suitable property, and sent up 24 hour sentry duty. You will also need to arm yourself adequately.

Would you be prepared to kill intruders?

If the electricity went off for 3 days you'd have to eat the contents of the fridge and freezer first. We would have some, er, interesting meals after a while.

Note to self: must get more gas canisters for the camping stove.

If the electricity goes of for three days, I'm screwed because I have an induction hob, a microwave, two electric ovens and an air fryer!!

Note to self - must buy a camping stove...

BurntBroccoli · 27/03/2025 17:31

I added a few things extra a week to prepare for Brexit against massive rises in food price. Carried this on since. Bought water purification tablets, a gas camping stove (which I’ve used during power cuts), rechargeable lanterns, phone power packs (including a solar charge one), a flint and a wind up radio. Keep 2 litre water bottles in the garage too (which I’ve also used when the water was cut off).

And how do you intend to survive once the gas runs out?!

Those little gas canisters don't last long...

I am happy to drink wine and beer for a few days...

Yes the smell of roasting squirrel drifting on the air could tempt in raiders that did not heed the 72 hour preparation tips.

I think I'd go for a supersoaker with shampoo mixed in the water then go for the eyes.
Don't want to hurt - just hinder.

You can refill bottles with tap water and add a date in Sharpi - refresh from time to time.

Cherrysoup · 27/03/2025 17:35

We’ve been trying to reduce the stuff in the freezer, we were lucky a few times when shopping, caught a few bargains each time we went over a few weeks. There’s definitely more than 3 days’ worth in there. I can’t imagine having to shop daily or every two days.

I'm told squirrel is reasonably tasty.

Now how do you catch the squirrel?

Got a trap handy? They are suckers for peanut butter.

In terms of clean water, know how to brew is a useful tool as this was the traditional method to take on liquid and reduce the risk that water poses.

(My zombie apocalypse plan may be more advanced than other peoples).

tillyandmilly · 27/03/2025 17:36

Got lots of porridge and bottles of water stored - not much other food as costs enough just for a week’s worth of food!

It also depends on how hungry your raiders are.

Two days of co op being closed and all bets are off. The super soakers won't do shit.
