Not allowed to take any holiday in June at work

exhaustedandwholly · 27/03/2025 12:01

Due to the nature of my job, we have a lot of events happening in June which I help organise etc. I've requested a few days in June for a holiday and they've been declined and been told we cannot request any time in June due to how busy it will be. It frustrates me because this is the only time we can really go away before summer holidays start otherwise July is too expensive (we haven't got kids) and may isn't hot enough in most places.

Does anyone else have these issues?!

Yes this is very common at many companies.

YourAzureScroller · 27/03/2025 17:11

At least it's only one month you have to avoid
We can't take bank holidays, easter school break, the summer school break, 20th December through to after new years

October school holidays is a fight to who gets there first and only one person from each section off at a time.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 27/03/2025 17:13

If that was in the terms of contract when I took the job and signed then so be it.

I'd not be looking at taking a sickie either.

TravellingSpoon · 27/03/2025 17:15

In my job we can only book a maximum of 2 weeks during school holidays across the year, and nothing during Christmas week.

Its rubbish.

Another one saying to go off sick. When did the nation become full of dishonest liars?''

Do you really think all employers are honest and truthful?

My current one misrepresented the details of my job at interview stage, expects me to deal with a full time workload 3 days a week and was awful to me when I had sick leave after a life-threatening incident.

I have zero loyalty towards them after that.

Velmy · 28/03/2025 01:39

I used to work for a company that provided payment and communication software to schools. We didn't allow annual leave for the whole of September/October due to the volume of work we had in during that period. No kids, so I love a late September holiday, but just had to suck it up while working there.

I once ended up on jury duty for the last two weeks of August...two weeks of very anxious txt messages asking me how it was going and if I'd be back in time 😅

BlondiePortz · 28/03/2025 02:08

So suggestions of ''go off sick'' whenever people dont get their own way makes me think of being toddler age, do grown mature people really do this?

GnomeDePlume · 28/03/2025 03:01

I'm an accountant working in a company finance team.

No time off during the first two weeks of any month for month end close, longer during year end close.

I will be retiring in a few years and am excitedly looking forward to going on holiday on the 1st of the month. I will feel quite giddy!

MumChp · 28/03/2025 04:12

Isn't it quite common? No AL in NHS in July/August/December.
And you are lucky if you have time of on bank holidays and school holidays. Always a fight.

NHS staff do have annual leave in July/August/December, including doctors and nurses.

Not my trust. Forget about it.

RebeccaRedhat · 28/03/2025 18:15

May is gorgeous abroad. As it September.

Toooldtopretend · 28/03/2025 18:30

I used to love a September holiday before I had kids. Places are great temperatures still but no crowds. Same mid May as long as you can avoid half term

ohtowinthelottery · 28/03/2025 18:31

I went to Andalucia in mid May last year and Southern Italy and Sicily in September. All plenty warm enough for sunbathing - although the season does seem to end in mid September in many parts of Italy.

Branleuse · 28/03/2025 18:40

Can't you find anywhere thats hot in May or a different month??

NellieJean · 28/03/2025 18:43

Noshowlomo · 27/03/2025 12:02

That is really shit. Pull a sicky

Fine but be prepared for an in depth discussion with HR and to be first on the list if they ever have to reduce head count. BTW it will be blindingly obvious what you’re doing the only issue they will have is proving it. DH has 700 staff so his words not mine.

Fogey · 28/03/2025 18:45

Yup. In almost every job I’ve worked in …especially teaching, I’ve been restricted by when I take holidays. My thoughts on this are: if you think it’s a big enough deal, you could always leave and get another job which fits in with your holiday needs, or … put up with it. I don’t like the idea of pulling a sickie … it can make people feel resentful and impact on teamwork relationships etc… however you might not be bothered about that, so go ahead. It’s hard running a business … and there are uncertain times ahead. That said, I feel your pain …. My September holiday request has been declined. Can’t win!

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 27/03/2025 12:08

That’s what sick days are for

No it isn't

luckylavender · 28/03/2025 19:00

Swirlythingy2025 · 27/03/2025 14:37

Frame your request in a way that benefits them. Don’t ask for time off offer a solution. “I understand the importance of June. But I’ve been working relentlessly to ensure these events go off without a hitch. To ensure I can continue to give my best and avoid burnout, I’d like to take a few days off during this period to recharge. I’ll make sure all my responsibilities are covered.” This shows you’re still thinking about the company’s needs while making your case.

You can frame it anyway you want, if it's not allowed, it's not allowed.

Not sure why you are insistent that people will get found out for a few days off sick when actually on holiday.
If people are doing it they are not putting it all over their social media and there is absolutely no other way to find it out.
Manager doesn't need to believe you are ill as they cant do anything about it.

They come back with sun tan?

asrl78 · 28/03/2025 19:02

luckylavender · 28/03/2025 18:58

No it isn't

I have to say, in between the solid stuff and the entertaining stuff on this forum, there is a sea of eeeewwwwwwwwww that sometimes has to be waded through to get to the first two. Seriously suggesting pulling a sickie definitely comes under the latter.

croydon15 · 28/03/2025 19:21

Depends where you want to go but a lot of places abroad are hot in may, Spain, the Canaries, Greece etc

fetchacloth · 28/03/2025 19:43

I used to work in a school and staff were only allowed to take holidays during the school holidays. No cheap getaways whilst I worked there, and certainly not in June.

PurBal · 28/03/2025 19:44

Yeah, used to be June and December for me. Go in September?
