Not allowed to take any holiday in June at work

exhaustedandwholly · 27/03/2025 12:01

Due to the nature of my job, we have a lot of events happening in June which I help organise etc. I've requested a few days in June for a holiday and they've been declined and been told we cannot request any time in June due to how busy it will be. It frustrates me because this is the only time we can really go away before summer holidays start otherwise July is too expensive (we haven't got kids) and may isn't hot enough in most places.

Does anyone else have these issues?!

Some companies don’t care about you.

Some companies do care about you.

Some employees are dishonest and lie.

Some employees are honest and don’t lie.

I’m an honest employee who works for a company that care about me.

Unless you work for a one man band that have minimum employees then you are just a number to the vast majority of employers.
If you quit or left they will replace you within hours online. You are just a payroll number.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/03/2025 14:44

Early July is not that expensive. Schools don’t break up until July 18th - that’s when prices rocket. You could go for a two week holiday and be back by 12th July.

Imperfectpolly · 27/03/2025 14:46

Manxexile · 27/03/2025 12:59

I don't think so. Even if booked in advance the employer can still cancel it. Of course that might lead the employee to resign - assuming they can find another job without too much difficulty...

I wasn't suggesting this would be the same elswhere.
In the last line of the OP, Op asked if anyone experienced this in their workplace and I responded with the answer regarding my work place and what actually did/does happen there.

That’s what sick days are for

No it's not, that would be just being a selfish twat.

They are red holiday weeks for a reason.

Bet you and the others suggesting sickies are great to work with.

And can’t believe how many people are advising taking sick leave! Bit suspicious if you take time of with a vomiting bug, and come back with a tan!

Five or six in this thread...so not only are they dishonest and a bit stupid ( no manager is going to believe you are ill , and you will get found out), you also couldn't care about leaving your colleagues in the lurch, and you don't have any personal standards.

What lovely people.

Thepeopleversuswork · 27/03/2025 15:05

I've just been told I can't take any leave at all during the summer holidays. Although I am technically one of the bosses, I'm not as "boss" as the other bosses so they all get first dibs on holiday and I've now been told we're too busy and I need to hold the fort.

I haven't had any annual leave (apart from two days at Christmas) since October half term and it sucks. Honestly I'm thinking of moving jobs over it.

There are industries where leave is problematic for people and they have to impose freezes in order to not disadvantage others. Which is understandable.

But expecting one person to carry the can because others want to take holiday whenever they like is shit.

Elphamouche · 27/03/2025 15:05

Go further in May. I wouldn’t touch Europe in May if you want heat though. Early July also doesn’t hold the cost increase of the end of July. It will be more than June depending on location because of the weather.

I can’t take leave Jan-March. DH can’t take leave because in school holidays.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 27/03/2025 15:07

I work in Finance. Not supposed to take holiday for the whole first quarter of the year unless exceptional.

KellySeveride · 27/03/2025 15:09

Cyprus is still gloriously hot in September and October…just saying.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/03/2025 15:10

September is good in lots of places - school hols over, crowds mostly gone, and sea nice and warm, if you like the sea.

Or as pps have said, early July. Most state schools (at least in England) don’t break up until around the 20th and private schools will typically be around a week earlier.

Mostunexpected · 27/03/2025 15:10

Surely this is normal in a lot of jobs? There are going to be times you can't go away. It's 1 month you're not allowed away for, and with good reason.
There are plenty of places that are very warm in May - it's a great time to go away. Or you could go early July, or September. Lots of options

Isobel201 · 27/03/2025 15:12

Quite a lot of places will be warm in May. Or you could go in autumn/early winter. The canary islands are nice at that time of year.

Try being an HE lecturer. Christmas, Easter and late July or August. That’s it. First week in September if you’re lucky.

I'm a HE lecturer. I take a week in late June and early July after assessments and before graduation, first two weeks in September with a week before freshers week to get on top of everything I've already planned throughout August, a week in January to follow on from the Christmas shutdown, a few days in April and the rest just whenever. Works fine for me and avoids school holidays.

orangedream · 27/03/2025 15:12

It's very standard for businesses to have busy periods during the year when leave isn't allowed.

wherearemypastnames · 27/03/2025 15:16

My DH used to be banned from taking holidays 2 weeks in every month

made childcare in the holidays dreadful - he often ended up with 2 weeks in the whole summer to have as holiday - if no one else got there first

Ah, but then there are resits in August and for some institutions, summer school/open houses. And over Christmas, we had marking. It literally became all was available was Easter and a week in July after a while...many people didn't end up taking their full leave because it became so difficult. Which, I suppose was the intention of the managers who could take holiday when they wanted because they didn't teach.

I'm glad you could do that. Be thankful your institution hasn't introduced summer school.

You obviously work in a reasonable place! We still have assessments boards running on well into June and occasionally in early July but if you’ve got school aged DC that’s no good in any case.

leviosanotleviosa25 · 27/03/2025 15:22

Ours is no leave in March, sept and leave around Christmas has to be drawn out a hat

Oh yes, I agree! I don’t know anyone who gets their whole leave in.

Maray1967 · 27/03/2025 15:24

Not who is teaching, at least …

And never half term, which gets expensive for holiday clubs!

Yes, indeed. And if a reading week coincides with half term staff are expected to run office hours on two austere days and meetings or staff development will be scheduled.

Sick days are for when you're ill, not for when you don't like your conditions of employment.

Orangeoranges42 · 27/03/2025 15:39

It’s not uncommon really is sometime nature of the business. try mid May usually fine or go slightly further. Or perhaps September.
