To think that taxi fare should not change en route for no apparent reason?

Or is this standard these days? Just asking before I phone the company to ask them.

I booked a taxi for the exact same journey several times with the same taxi company. The drivers always have their phone up on display showing the final taxi fare amount. Today, just as we arrived at the destination he told me he had a text and now the fare was more than the amount quoted. This text came through on a different phone, which I think was his phone.

I asked him where that text come from and he gave me the name of the taxi company I had booked. I asked this because he had previously told me he was also an Uber driver. I asked him why the price had suddenly gone up and he just said sometimes it changes on route. No explanation.

I asked him for a written receipt and he said no, just take a photo of the phone screen of the text with the new price.

It was the same route, no detours, no change from all the previous times.

And added irony is that when I first got in the cab he asked me if I was paying with cash. I told him yes because every single time I tried to pay with card it was a time-consuming hassle that never worked properly. He said well you are best paying with cash because with card, you get charged an extra amount, usually 35p, taken by Google pay.

And not only that, customers had complained that when they had paid by card, they got another charge at the end of the month, could be anything from £5 or more, on top of amount already paid.

I thanked him for telling me and said I would definitely pay cash, then - and then the sudden price hike happened.

As I got out of the taxi I said so it really makes no difference whether I pay cash or card, I could end up paying more either way!

Has anyone else had this?

Taxi journey costs usually vary by distance and time, perhaps there were traffic delays? If you prefer fixed cost, some minicab firms will offer that but you usually pay in advance.

AdaStewart · 26/03/2025 14:51

I’ve had different drivers from the same company charge different amounts for exactly the same route. When I queried it they said it depends on the time.

I used to use one taxi company where they would text you telling you how much the fare would be, if you were charged more they wanted to know. It’s a shame more firms don’t do the same.

redsun246 · 26/03/2025 14:54

Thank you for replying. There were NO delays or detours at all. I don't even remember stopping at a red light. I had offered to pay at the time of booking but they won't do that and tell you you have to pay in the car.

I am perhaps more hacked off than I normally would be as it was only yesterday I had an account hacked and I had to cancel my debit card.😱😡

That’s Uber for you. I thought everyone was aware of their rip-off tactics.

Change your taxi company

It wasn't Uber, though. I've never used Uber. It was a well known, nationwide taxi and private hire company.

Change your taxi company

Absolutely. I will never hire them again.

Too add insult to injury, it turned out, more or less, to be a wasted journey anyway!😂

Taxis where I live you pay by the km so you don't know until you get there

This wasn't Uber. Uber is great you pay a fixed price in advance. It will vary according to supply and demand for the trip at the time you're travelling, but you know exactly what you will pay before you get in the car.

Gelatibon · 26/03/2025 15:53

I've always found using taxis, especially by myself, a bit scary. Uber has been life changing! I can use it in pretty much any city in the world (at least the ones I've been to) price fixed in advance, you know the car and the driver in advance, car payments, and IME lovely friendly drivers too.

Love it. It's also taken the uncertainty away for my elderly parents who have had to accept they shouldn't be driving, but with Uber they still have their freedom, whereas local minicab firms are notoriously unreliable.

Yes, that's what I've been used to for most of my life tbh. I'm fairly new to this area, different county than before, so just going with the flow of how they seem to do it here.

No, that's not how Uber works.

OP, the driver is not declaring his cash income.

And customers should not be seeing amounts different from what they paid appearing on their monthly CC statements.

Does he have a skimmer installed on his payment device?

Call the taxi company and complain. I suspect this man is a thief.

Same here but you can see the money and mileage both increasing on the driver's screen as you travel. There are no surprises when you reach your destination. Nor are there extra charges for using a card.

Yes it is. They change the fare price during the journey and make sure the journey is the longest way possible. No, I haven’t used one and I wouldn’t. My son is a London black cab driver and the cabbies are well aware of how corrupt the Ubers are (and unsafe). No CRB checks etc.

Thank you. My husband has said exactly the same thing! He knows the man who owns the company, through his own work, and is going to give him a call.

I can't believe people can be that blatant! Especially as on the journey, the driver and I were discussing scammers, as I'd had to cancel my debit card the day before due to being hacked!!!!

They really really don't. The price is fixed before the driver even accepts the journey.

Literally, it was the exact second he was pulling up at the end he casually mentioned that the price was now more. No prior warning or sign of it before.

I think he was stealing from you.

I'd have refused to pay the extra, and called the taxi office in front of him to get clarity.

They do have enhanced DBS checks too. They can't drive for Uber without a PHV licence and annual checks are part of that process. Obviously Black Cabbies aren't fans but there's no need to spread lies.

Aaron95 · 26/03/2025 16:30

This is a classic taxi driver scam. I've never encountered it in the UK but it is common in many countries.

The driver uses their phone to track and charge the route. Then when you get to the destination the driver will input a completely different route to their phone, or even pull out a different phone, show it to you very quickly and try to get paid for the amount on the screen which is far higher than the actual fare.

Sorry OP but I think you were done.

They do. It's very easy to check.
