Just been listening to this Spring Statement. What a load of total waffle. About how great things are going to be. Absolute and utter nonsense.

OP posts:

She's as spineless and cruel as a Tory MP, but comes across as a bit more normal. I still don't like her. I did at first but she's a terrible Chancellor and Labour have lied through their teeth. Their manifesto was all lies.

I really hope there is a paradigm shift in politics because we are all out of ideas and don't have any politicians brave enough to put the people of this country first.

edwinbear · 26/03/2025 16:04

She doesn't have the credentials. I work with dozens of people with Oxford PPE degrees and Masters in Economics (I work in investment banking). My own degree is in economics, neither me, nor my colleagues are in any way capable of being Chancellor. Having a theoretical knowledge of economics is one thing, but as she's demonstrated, putting it into practice successfully is an entirely different matter. She has no understanding whatsoever how to put the economic theory she's studied, to good use. She has no experience or understanding of business of the private sector at all.

Lots of male Chancellors have had the same educational background. Where is their nickname? Most cabinet members have absolutely no experience working in the field they’re put in!

Absolutely not, however the vitriol towards one woman trying to turn around the country's finances and dealt an extremely difficult hand is astonishing. The socio economic and political environment is dire, depressing and getting worse every day... economy has been static since 2008...but it's her fault we aren't growing and prospering?

I think I'm just a realist. There is no land of milk and honey for any of us anymore.

Not only that but a) she's allegedly not qualified enough and b) not many people have the requisite experience for Chancellor because it's an extremely tough job.

My guess is you'd be disappointed with most people in the post.

You clearly have absolutely zero grasp of what Reeves has done to the economy, growth and jobs when she took a scythe to business. She is utterly incompetent. Starmer continues to back her only because he knows that his own reputation is tied with hers.

What lies are you seeing? I don’t agree with all their decisions, but I’m not seeing lies. This website shows they haven’t broken - or even compromised - any pledges. https://pledgeprogress.co.uk

Are you sure about all that?

You are SURE I don't have a grasp on the state of the economy?

Please enlighten me with the positive impact this Chancellor has had on the economy. Go for it.

So if you have a better understanding of economics than she does, what would you say were her main mistakes?

I have seen a lot of women in business rubbished and personally attacked by people who 'know better' but have neither the means nor inclination to step forward with practical help and suggestions. I'm sure you have too?

I’ve told you further up thread her major mistake. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with her being a woman. I don’t care if we have a male or female chancellor. I just want a competent one.

Her NI hikes have utterly screwed the economy first and foremost. Also boxing themselves in by saying in their manifesto there would be no tax increases for workers then tying themselves in knots as to who is a worker.

You know there are more SMEs in this country employing people than major corporations and obviously they are working people as well as business owners.

I'm sure if Reeves is willing to pay a £2.5k/day consultancy fee then people will willingly share their knowledge.

Well, the country voted Labour, we got Labour. If you don't like it, you should probably crack on and campaign for your preferred alternative.

The country didn’t vote for what they’ve done so far or they wouldn’t have won. They’ve been called out on their broken manifesto promises numerous times and if it hasn’t affected you yet be patient because your turn will arrive.

@Yorkshirelass04why is wiping out £9.9bn headroom then clawing back through cuts, including welfare cuts, and halving growth good for the economy?

Exactly.
Starmer is now in a desperate position as his reputation is tied to his lame duck chancellor. The knives are already out for her.

Her Autumn budget sealed her fate. It’s already unraveling and the hikes in NI haven’t even started yet. But planning has.

Well that's what I charge and my clients happily pay, so yes. That said, I don't need to lie on my CV and I'm far more highly qualified than Rachel Reeves. She's not working for free so why should anyone else?

She's probably bought herself another 6 months today - if she's lucky.

This does somewhat illustrate her position and the NI increase hasn’t even started yet!

Sorry im confused, I don't think anyone was asking you to work for free?

I absolutely admire the career you've made for yourself. Is it in economics?

I'll never miss Boris as PM, but I do miss Rishi as chancellor. At least he understood the principles of economics.

Shame he didn't understand the basics of infection transmission. His eating out to help out campaign most likely increased covid infections and deaths. I cannot forget that.

Yes she is. But all the disability cuts and stricter assessments came as no surprise.

Labour are proving to be hopeless with everything. 🤷‍♀️

TheWombatleague · 26/03/2025 16:50

I didn't agree with blue Labour's neoliberalism before the election and I've seen nothing to change my opinion.

You may be right. She goes, he should. Although I can see him keeping her in a bid to also cling on. And the usual attempt at blaming everyone else.

Escaperoom · 26/03/2025 16:53

I just wish she wouldn't smile so much whilst giving what she must know is unwelcome news. It makes her look as though she is enjoying it (not saying she actually is). If she could pull off a more serious demeanour instead of smirking it might make me more inclined to believe her when she expresses regret at what she is having to do.

itsgettingweird · 26/03/2025 16:55

strawlight · 26/03/2025 14:02

A private school in her constituency has just closed down after 270 years and the locals are fuming. Won’t be surprised if she gets booted out as their MP.

several private schools have closed down in my constancy previously under the Tory government. Also been open 100’s of years.

It hasnt (sadly) been the end of Braverman being our MP!

No, not economics but I don't believe you need an economics background to be a good chancellor. Right now, we desperately need someone who understands how to stimulate growth and is willing to make the right decisions to do that.
