Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

So you heard him knock? It sounds like you're slow at answering the door.
I bet you'd complain if he took it back to the depot. You probably would also complain if he left it under a bush in your garden.
I deliver parcels too. Between leaving the van and getting back in the van we have about 30 seconds. If they don't answer and the door is unlocked I open the door and leave it at the other side. Basically the same place that letters would be if they went through the letterbox.
If somebody got arsy with me for doing that, they'd find all their parcels being delivered to random neighbours from then on. They don't pay me enough to take crp from slow people.

im moving to the op viilage where there's no crime

Maybe you should be angry at your employers for giving you bad working conditions. Rather than people who take longer than 30 seconds to answer the door.

GabriellaFaith · 27/03/2025 00:46

Your lucky it was an honest delivery driver! Lock your door!

user1492757084 · 27/03/2025 00:54

I ask them to pop it in the door.
Some older people need food onto their high table.
Expecting a delivery - give very clear directions or expect a knock or if out in the back yard a delivery into your hallway.

They have no time to re deliver.
You want your delivery.
You want it safe.

No - we live in a village, and have done for a long time and have never had this issue.

i shouldn’t have to lock my door. Delivery drivers should not even attempt to open and trespass on private property.

While I don't disagree with this, you really should lock your door. Someone with more sinister intentions isn't going to uphold any moral code

bomalan · 27/03/2025 02:05

Yeah, that is weird. If he just opened the door and popped it in then I wouldn’t see a problem, but to actually walk in is bizarre.

we have a conservatory and all the posties know to just open the door and plonk parcels on the floor. I came downstairs one day to find the parcel halfway across my living room, so one of the posties had made his way through the conservatory and actually into my house. So weird. Hasn’t happened since, but on what planet would that be normal.

IamMaz · 27/03/2025 03:43

I don’t like my front door. And I don’t expect anyone to just come in!

NotVeryFunny · 27/03/2025 04:25

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/03/2025 19:57

Yes, this is common.

I caught a delivery driver trying to open my door (he failed, it was locked).

I’ve also just installed a better back gate with locks as they let themselves into my garden via the side of the house.

No boundaries. None at all.

I don’t understand you. Why would you not want your deliveries. I can understand not wanting random people in the house, but not wanting them to just pop a parcel in your back garden? Why not? They leave them on the front door step here, much rather they were in the back garden!

MooFroo · 27/03/2025 05:30

open door = come on in

not the drivers fault, yours got leaving door unlocked

TimeForATerf · 27/03/2025 05:42

I’m with you 💯 OP, I live in a safe area, for many years I didn’t lock my door. Then the postie opened it and put parcels inside the doorway twice. I complained to RM but didn’t get anywhere just a non committal response and sorry, not sorry.

I now lock it, I resent doing it, I live off the road, we can’t be seen from the road, we have cctv, however I do not want the door opening and finding a delivery coming through the door when I’ve come downstairs in just my knickers (which is a frequent habit).

I should be able to come downstairs in my t-shirt and knickers in my own home.

Rumpoleoftheballet · 27/03/2025 05:52

No of course the driver, or anyone else that’s uninvited, should not enter your house. That goes without saying.

The fact that you live in a rural village with a low crime rate is really neither here nor there for delivery purposes so the only way to mitigate that is by locking your door from now on.

Can I ask why you are hesitant to start locking your door?

HoppingPavlova · 27/03/2025 06:04

I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table

Would it have been different if he was short? Struggling to see the relevance of his height?

RedHelenB · 27/03/2025 06:17

Terrified is a bit strong. If you're that terrified lock the door.

Neither should sneak thieves but they do. And your insurance company probably wouldn't accept that as a reason for not doing your best to protect your property.
Just lock your door!

Where on earth do you live that you are worried about squatters or drug addicts coming into your house when you are in the house? Is your area just full of squatters going from door to door all day long to check if anyone is in?

I suppose that I don’t live in the rural idyll that most people seem to live in despite my being rural and also city based. I have cameras and locks in both places. The local groups I’m in for both places have updates with the rural based group being the most active with posts. This week so far it’s about vans cruising about, random people about, fly tipping, door selling scams etc best to stay vigilant.

Brutalass · 27/03/2025 08:04

OMG - I'd be incensed! But then tbh the guy wouldn't have survived at our house.

I only lock the door if I'm out the back or at night - but we do have a big dog and if he doesn't know someone - he would most definitely kick up a massive stink. He's not a fan of men, especially those in 'Hi vis' so anyone delivering packages wouldn't stand a chance and would probably be pinned to the floor at best or the dog would take a hefty chunk out of someone if they're unlucky! If the kids are in the house and he's feeling particularly protective who knows what might happen!?*

I hate that a complete stranger has taken such a liberty. This should never happen (unless invited - completely understand if you have an arrangement with the post person if you live somewhere safe and remote). Especially if you're a woman in a home on her own. I'd definitely be taking this up further and would be like a dog with a bone - but then that's just me. I'd be particularly aggrieved by this!

Umbrella15 · 27/03/2025 08:59

I never lock my doors when I am at home. Never had to, and I am not going to start doing it now

Crazyworldmum · 27/03/2025 10:00

I’ve had it happen with Royal Mail ! I was shocked!
I think it’s actually very dangerous too . Our previous dog was a Doberman , he never barked at the front door , if he heard a noise he would wait behind the door , if he was there there is no way that person would go out again . We had a delivery driver when we had him just a fence as he threw the deliver to our garden and then realised it wasn’t ours , as it was a expensive item he jumped the wall , the dog threw the guy on the floor with paws on his chest growling. Thankfully we are good owners who trained this dog since he was 8 weeks old so as soon as we saw it we call him and he came and sat by our side .
It’s a stupid thing to do and driver should be told not to do this.

Are you for real ? My partner worked for Amazon during Covid and I know all about the rush of the job but he would never do that ! Do you know how dangerous it is ? Not only you risk being attacked by a dog but you risk getting beaten up . I live rural so we don’t have much crime but my friend lives in the outskirts of London and keeps a a very large lice of wood behind her door as she had been robbed twice once in hike they slept . Do you think it’s worth the risk ?

nats2010 · 27/03/2025 10:09

I'd rather that my parcel was dropped into my hall than some fucker lift it from outside and steal it.
I live in the countryside and regularly have the photo roulette to try and work out where my parcel has been dropped off 😅 😳

gannett · 27/03/2025 10:15

I don't expect anyone to let themselves into my house and therefore I lock my doors. If I don't lock my doors I have to accept that anyone is able to come through them whether or not they "should". In the case of a delivery I would probably just be happy they'd made an effort to deliver it safely to the right address, as opposed to in my bin or in my neighbour's bin or to two streets away or to a random stairwell at the end of my road.

I live in London where all front doors lock automatically so the recurring MN theme of people who don't lock their doors is like a peek into an alternate universe. Men who don't take their keys with them when they go drinking. People who have a "locking up" routine every night. What are you like!

Regretsmorethanafew · 27/03/2025 10:17

Lol. 'all front doors in London lock automatically " is a new one.
They don't, obviously.
