That moving back to the UK is not going to happen

Backwoods57 · 25/03/2025 10:51

We have lived in the US for the past 10 years. I constantly get heat from my family in the UK to move back home. I talked it through and its just not going to happen.

Here we have a house, and a camp, I run my own business. We hunt, shoot, fish, camp. The kids are in a great school (DD3 DD6). We have a great life.

If we moved we would sell have to sell up everything, house, guns, cars, motorcycles, I would have to sell the business (I can't move/run it in the UK). DH would refuse to sell camp. So that would mean we would come to the UK with £500-£550k in our pocket.

DH earns the equivalent of £90k, he would be looking at £40-50k for the same job in the UK. I would have to get a minimum wage job. I just don't think we could set up a life, and continue on a trajectory towards retirement. Does my logic make sense?

@Backwoods57 what are you looking for from your post? You haven't actually said.

You have asked if your 'logic' is sound, but you have only listed the pros of staying in the USA, not also the cons, which I'm sure also exist. You have given good reasons why life where you are is good - but to balance that up, what would be better if you return to UK?

So are you wanting validation on whether you are making the right decision to stay? Or how to handle pressure from you relations to move back to UK when you don't want to? Or is there another reason altogether?

thepariscrimefiles · 25/03/2025 11:51

If you're the sort of person that would be upset about getting rid of your guns, I don't know why you are even considering leaving the US.

Gun ownership (including lack of checks when buying a gun), gun crime and school shootings would be reasons never to move to the US for most of us, but you have embraced that culture so you probably wouldn't fit in back in the UK.

Ecotype · 25/03/2025 11:54

Guns? Do us all a favour and stay where you are.

BigDecisionWorthIt · 25/03/2025 11:55

If you are happy there then stay. You shouldn't feel quilted by family to do something you don't want to do. Especially when it could have a negative and significant impact financially.

The disparity in wages/salary here compared the the US is nuts.
I'm looking at entry level jobs that pay either the same or more than what I'm on now with 9 years of experience.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/03/2025 11:57

Stay where you are, you don't have to move.

Pointynoseowner · 25/03/2025 11:58

Just stay with your guns and hunting, do us all a favour

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2025 12:01

It sounds like your lifestyle suits you and that it would be something hard to replicate if you moved to the UK. I wouldn't blame you for sticking where you're happy.

LibrariansGiveUsPower · 25/03/2025 12:05

If you wanted to move you could- you’d easily buy a house outright with that money. You would have to innovate, but you could have good quality of life.

it’s clear you don’t want to however. Which is fine.

RedHelenB · 25/03/2025 12:07

Lentilweaver · 25/03/2025 11:04

So don't move. Stay there with your guns and your shooting. Nobody's stopping you.

This.

Thatcat · 25/03/2025 12:07

GCAcademic · 25/03/2025 11:00

I don't get why you started this thread? Is it to get people het up about the hunting and guns?

That’s what it smells like.

TwoWildlings · 25/03/2025 12:08

I think your lifestyle is more suited for the US, so best to stay put.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/03/2025 12:11

Is this to somehow show off what lifestyle you can have compared to UK for middling jobs? Not sure I get the point-if you don’t want to move- don’t-

MzHz · 25/03/2025 12:12

are you just second-guessing yourself?, it's OBVIOUS to us that you'd be daft to move back, if you are happy, H happy, kids happy, then that is all you need to think about.

This is your life, not your family's life. Out of interest, is it parents pressuring you? are you expected to be a care giver or something?

Crushed23 · 25/03/2025 12:13

Um… ignore family and do what makes you happy?

I emigrated from the UK to the US last year. Some family members disapproved, but that’s their problem, not mine. Absolutely no regrets.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/03/2025 12:15

@MeliusMoriQuamServire agree totally about Scandinavia having lived there- but I can’t agree about everything else - weather depends really where you live in US, plenty of shit food in US unless wealthy, same goes for housing and education. Same of course apply to UK- although I think on food and education and health its less money dependent than US

CarrieOnComplaining · 25/03/2025 12:18

How much do you want for your guns? DM me with prices and spec?

Loloj · 25/03/2025 12:19

I feel like you’ve missed out a whole section in your OP?

Was the original plan to move back to the UK? Why is moving back even a discussion? Is it just that family are putting pressure on you to move back home? Are your immediate family all happy with staying put in America?

If you want to stay put then stay put. I’m not sure why you mean about your logic? It sounds like you have a good life set up over there. Family can visit you and you can visit family. It’s your life.

CarrieOnComplaining · 25/03/2025 12:21

What is the basis of 'heat' from your family?

Is your sibling bearing the brunt and expense of caring for parents? Are parents sad to not see their grandkids growing up?

In which case, fuck 'em, obviously - go shooting and send them a vac packed squirrel carcass and a recipe, if you can get it though customs.

OR maybe discuss alternative ways of keeping family connections going? You send money for care / pay for grandparents flights from your high salaries etc?

Twinstudy · 25/03/2025 12:24

Is this just a thread for you to brag about your lifestyle/get people riled up about the guns or the US in general? You want to stay, stay. You don't need to justify it to anyone, least of all some randomers on a forum.

MrsSlocombesCat · 25/03/2025 12:36

You're well and truly Americanised. Stay there we don't want you.

TheGoogleMum · 25/03/2025 12:42

What's "a camp"? I don't believe you are British

Backwoods57 · 25/03/2025 12:45

@TheGoogleMum it's some Woodland with a log cabin on it

OP posts:
Backwoods57 · 25/03/2025 12:46

@Loloj I always believed it was a one-way move for us. However, my family was never particularly accepting of the idea to begin with that resentment is increasing, especially as my mother gets older and is planning on needing care.

OP posts:
Backwoods57 · 25/03/2025 12:46

The guns were mentioned because they were a reasonably sized investment to fund the move with
