Are Europeans 'pathetic European free loaders'?

WhatsApp chat released today from the US calling Europeans 'pathetic European free-loaders'.

One of our closest allies! What about support from European countries after September 11th?

AIBU to expect more professional language?

We need to accept that America no longer shares our values and wishes to protect them on a global stage.

I just don't see the logic of the US bombing the Houthis.

Only 3% of US trade flows through the Red Sea and Suez whereas it is 40% of EU trade flows.

If the Houthis succeed in choking off shipping in the Red Sea / Suez it's not going to impact the US so why bother going to the expense and risks of keeping the shipping lanes open through military action.

The only reason I can think of is that it's being done as a favour to the Saudis and Egypt.

Remember that Saudi Arabia and Egypt are supposed to take all the people from Gaza.

Forever.

If you can find a way to do a cut and replace in Trumps verbiage and replace "Europe" with "Middle East", things suddenly make a lot fo sense.

It's the Middle East that the US are really upset over freeloading. All that money the US has spent defending US oil interests and they can't do him this one little favour.

It helps if you picture Trump at a wedding with Vance dancing around with a little girl standing on his shoes and Putin with his new girlfriend saying "That's my family Kay, It's not me" as Kid Rock warbles away in the background.

Ted Nugent would be there too, of course.

Israel. And the Houthis are explicitly anti-American - they don’t exist because of the EU!

That would make a great A level question if you append "Discuss if they ever did" inviting the candidate to consider certain European elements over the decades.

As I said, a lot of people who lived through Suez never trusted the US again. And that carried on into the 70s when I grew up. I couldn't understand why older family friends were not as in thrall to the US that we youngsters saw.

Thisissuss · 27/03/2025 09:41

I agree but suspect different administrations usually took the world order for granted. Trump is like the teenager who rips out all of the original fittings and has a shiny new bar put in. Looks good for a few years but neighbours are secretly horrified and the next owner will have to spend ££ to replace all of the features.

It surely is a loss of soft (or not so soft) power for them to do this.

The origins of the US begin with a bunch of folks who wanted out of 18th century Europe.

It's never really changed.

It does make you wonder why we ever thought they might have protective instincts to us.

My vote is to go back to EU and apologise for Brexit, join up with Canada and create alliances with countries who don't vote in ex-cons. Although saying that, we did have Boris...was he ever arrested for domestic abuse in the end?

was he ever arrested for domestic abuse in the end?

Why would the police arrest him when the activist neighbour said this?

Once clear that no one was harmed, I contacted the Guardian...

But Israel gets the majority of its imports through the Med not the Red Sea / Suez. As for the Houthis being explicitly anti American then fine but that is not a reason to get involved. why would the US want to get involved when any impact on trade will hurt Europe far more than the US.

Realistically after the shit show that was Brexit I really can't see the EU especially the French wanting the UK back in the EU for very many years.

Oh it was the lying about Partygate, or when he falsified stories and got paid for it at the paper...oh no, it was the repeated contempts of Parliament...oh no, I forgot, he is a rich white male, so no charges.

Canada is also full of loonies, they only look sane by comparison with the US. Everything is relative.

Maybe only countries with true freedom of speech - i.e ones that don't ban books.

Oh it was the lying about Partygate

Convenient - Feb 2025;

Police will be taking no action over claims a voice coaching session for Sir Keir Starmer in December 2020 broke Covid lockdown rules.

A Met Police spokesperson said the alleged incident fell outside the three-year deadline for initiating proceedings related to pandemic-era legislation.

One was actually meant to be running the country though.

Still, both rich white men.

The other portrayed himself as a 'holier-than-thou' man of integrity.

Don't most men?
At least we don't have a convicted felon in charge.
And we don't ban books.

Clavinova · 27/03/2025 13:55

No - I don't think so.

Even Guardian columnists have referred to Keir Starmer as 'self-sainted Starmer'.

He's not my cup of tea but better than a cocky lying wife beater in many people's books.

Either way he does seem to be taking notice of the fact that for years US has been able to manipulate us because we don't have a strong army (look at us backing them in Afghanistan and where that has got us with immigration issues). Clearly needs addressing.

So if Europe ramps up its Armed Forces and doesn't necessarily see the US as a reliable ally does that put the US in a worse position? They would have a more powerful and not completely friendly group of nations that may oppose them if they see fit. Already there are disagreements on trade and the Ukraine war, not saying we would go to war with the US but it would alter the balance of power in the West.

This is the bit that I find most disturbing.

They are so YOUNG mentally. They don’t act like adults. It’s like a gang of teenaged boys playing tough. What is with this trend of regression in behaviour and expression and the veneration of adults acting like children.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion; people are very intolerant that others may think differently to them.
Biden kept the Ukraine war going for 3 years. Trump is trying to stop it (his approach is poor in my opinion).
When soldiers are dieing who is behaving like children? Those who kept fanning the flames or those trying to stop it. If it was your sons doing the fighting I dare say you'd want the fighting to stop and wouldn't be so intolerant of those trying to stop it.
But you're entitled to your opinion. Personally if it takes children to stop a war where the adults have failed then I'll take it.

Would you like some vinaigrette with your word salad?

(Also stop a war? They greenlit the bombing of a residential building killing 53 innocent men, women and children. Come on now!!!)
