Supermarket jars already opened?

A few weeks ago I went to open a jar of pesto from the fridge. The lid didn’t pop, it came off like it had already been opened and the pesto was mouldy. I chucked it away and forgot about it. I just went to open a jar of passata today and the same thing happened, only it wasn’t mouldy.

DH swears he’s not opening jars and putting them back but it seems bizarre. Anyone else had this?!

Yeah

Yes a few times. Again with pesto and also peanut butter where the foil was broken. We check in store now, v annoying.

Yup.

DH happened to get a nice big squeezy bottle of honey a couple of weeks back and after having left it on the counter I discovered honey had leaked everywhere. Didn't think too much about it after cleaning it up as I assumed he'd opened it.

Next bit of shopping done I was removing things from the shopping bag and discovered much of it very sticky and had to wash everything that had been bought as well as the bag to clean up more honey. Obviously the squeezy bottle had been opened in the shop and not closed properly.

Not sure if someone is opening them up to smell/taste the product or what.

Funnily enough I bought a jar of aubergine pesto today and found the lid was popped already. Frustrating as it was over £3!

SerendipityJane · 23/03/2025 16:05

Aren't they supposed to have depressions in the lid that let you know they have been opened ?

That said, my bugbear is sugar. Experience has taught me to ensure that it's immediately put into my Bag For Life before it can sprinkle everywhere.

If a lot of people are encountering compromised jars, then my spidey sinister senses are tingling.

I thought I was being gaslighted so interesting to hear it isn’t just me!

I had this last week!
Sainsburys delivery and a jar of capers already had the lid popped and most of the liquid had come out. Luckily, I noticed and did an online refund.

Never noticed this before though.

Maybe they’re being knocked in transit, breaking the seal?!
