To think I’m officially old now? What was your defining moment?!

That’s it. I’ve now officially hit old age. Went to a concert with my daughter this week and it was standing. I was on the fringes of a mosh pit and it was very annoying. My feet are still bruised, my hips and legs are killing me and I can’t hear anything. I’m still absolutely exhausted too. I’m 58.

When did you have your epiphany?

The same age.

I was in a cafe with my late husband when a middle-aged woman came up to me: "You were my teacher!" No, that wasn't it.

It was when she introduced me to her grandson.

littlefox90 · 23/03/2025 17:21

34 here but was shocked to find out some of my younger colleges didn't know what fools and horses was 😳 made me feel old. Oh and a post I saw on face book describing 1996 as the late 1900s

GrandHighPoohbah · 23/03/2025 17:22

I have always thought of Reece Withersppon as a peer age wise. I suddenly noticed she was getting "mum" roles and realised that's how I must be perceived too!

morningtoncrescent62 · 23/03/2025 17:24

When people started offering me seats on the bus. (I'm 63 and it began happening around my 60th birthday.) Also, when my youngest daughter had a big bash for her 30th birthday and described it as "entering middle age".

I’m 41 and am now the proud owner of crocs and Skechers. I bought them specifically for a Disney world trip as we’ll be doing a lot of walking but I’ve been wearing them at home as my god they’re comfortable.

I got Sketchers from my son for our Disney trip I love them! But don’t feel old at 65.

Charlize43 · 23/03/2025 17:28

I'm 58 and I'm still up for most things.

I have a friend who is in her 80s, still very active, who likes to go clubbing as she likes to be around younger men. Luckily, she's an elegant, classy dresser and doesn't dress like she's trying to imitate a twenty year old (neither do I) as I am often very conscious that we are the oldest women in the venue. We tend to do this more when we are abroad together.

AdditionalCharacter · 23/03/2025 17:30

I've started listening to a radio station specifically for music from the decade I was a teenager.

If I reminisce about my childhood to my DC, they like to remind me it was last century.

My youngest has no idea what a phone dial is and has never seen a wired telephone apart from in a museum. He's 17.

towhoknowswhere · 23/03/2025 17:33

54 here and strangely although I often feel a bit old, I feel my youngest and most ‘alive’ right in the centre of a mosh pit.
My dc are adults now and nothing makes me happier than going to a gig as a family, dh feels the same luckily!

StanfreyPock · 23/03/2025 17:34

Mid-sixties here, all standing concerts an absolute no-no. Feel no different inside but still do a double take when I catch sight of myself on a particularly bad day! Thank goodness for the smart bulb dimmer setting on the bathroom light...

LadyWiddiothethird · 23/03/2025 17:34

Nobody bats an eyelid when I say I am a Great Grandmother.I don’t tell anyone now,I only told people so they could complement me on my youthful looks! Not one person did,I look what I am old.

Pandimoanymum · 23/03/2025 17:34

I took my son to the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green when he was 7 and was stunned to see my 1970s toys in there. Things I Have Owned. In a MUSEUM 😩

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/03/2025 17:40

It was when started making the "oooff" noise when I stand up from the sofa.
I was reminded of my advanced age today when I googled Olly Bearman when watching him being interviewed after the F1 coverage and realising I'm old enough to be his nan.

justusandthecat · 23/03/2025 17:42

First band I saw live was Napalm death. The day I heard Steve Wright interviewing them on radio 2 was the day I realised I was getting on a bit.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 23/03/2025 17:44

When I switched channels on TV and thought how times have changed having womens football on prime time tv. Then after watching for several minutes I realised it was mens football they were wearing what I think of as women's fit shirts they also mostly had long hair and were literally covered in tattoos.
I realised they weren't women when one rolled around on the grass pulling faces, women don't do that.

ChristmasFluff · 23/03/2025 17:44

Realised I was officially old when I was genuinely excited by how good my new loo brush looked.

Butfirstcoffee123 · 23/03/2025 17:45

When someone mistook my only child (aged 10) for my grandson. And when I explained he was my son, was shocked that my DH (aged 45) is not my son!!!

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 23/03/2025 17:45

I'm 54 and it was staring back at myself in the hairdressers mirror a few years ago. I grew my grey out in lockdown and the honest truth is that it's aged me 10 years easily as people never thought I was my actual age before. But I can't face going back to the menopause mahogany hair dye. Sigh.

WisePearlPoet · 23/03/2025 17:47

Being a 60 year old grandma who has taken on the care of granddaughter and my new soft play friends are all my eldest daughters friends!

lazyarse123 · 23/03/2025 17:47

I've always been told I don't look my age until I got to about 60, now I just look knackered. Someone asked my dh his age and he said 70, lots of ooh you don't look it. They asked me and I said 66, complete silence. Slightly gutted they could have pretended.

DecafDodger · 23/03/2025 17:47

listening to radio and thinking that wow finally a lovely station with proper music.
Yes, it was some kind of Retro Golden Oldies one.

Ilovelowry · 23/03/2025 17:47

I was at the back of a mosh pit with DD who was 15. At an all day festival for a very hip band.

Some teenage boys lost the run of themselves and started being idiots, chucking water everywhere and knocking people over.

I work in a secondary school, I gave them ' the look' and the same tone of 'no' I use with our labradors.

They said sorry. DD told me I'm never allowed near a mosh pit again.

I was in some incredibly cool mosh pits in the 90s. This was my moment 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/03/2025 17:48

58 now .
A couple of years back I was on the train going to work ( carrying a decent sized backpack ) a young man in his mid 20s offered me his seat ( I politely declined as I was getting off at the next stop)

Journey last year with a wheely case , a young woman barged me out of the way to get on the train and nab the last seat . So either I look ok to stand or I am Old and Invisible ( and she was an ill mannered little madam)

Looking at shoes and thinking "Oh you look comfy"

No mosh pits for me though .

Pancakeflipper · 23/03/2025 17:50

I went to see a band (not a big gig - couple of hundred people) on Friday.

A woman of a certain age dropped something in front of me - it was her Rennies. She said they were her essentials for going out. I'd had to take my glasses. We bonded momentarily over being cool enough to be gigging, but needing stuff to get through the night.

SwanOfThoseThings · 23/03/2025 17:51

AInightingale · 23/03/2025 16:55

I was born in the early 70s too and what strikes me is how ancient the cars look in images of that time. I don't know why but I feel that this ages me badly.

Same here. What makes me feel old is that when I was born, the end of WW2 was less than 30 years ago.

Now, 30 years ago is last week the middle of the 1990s 😫

JohnTheRevelator · 23/03/2025 17:52

2 years ago, when I hit 60. I remember thinking 'How the actual fuck did this happen? I was only 18 a couple of years ago!'.
