To think I’m officially old now? What was your defining moment?!

That’s it. I’ve now officially hit old age. Went to a concert with my daughter this week and it was standing. I was on the fringes of a mosh pit and it was very annoying. My feet are still bruised, my hips and legs are killing me and I can’t hear anything. I’m still absolutely exhausted too. I’m 58.

When did you have your epiphany?

This season of Call the Midwife caught up to my birthday 😃

I was born in the early 70s too and what strikes me is how ancient the cars look in images of that time. I don't know why but I feel that this ages me badly.

Did a Tesco Whoosh order, it included beer, guy asks for my date of birth- he had an app on his phone to enter it and scrolled back, and back, and back, before saying it wasn't on there so I could just take the order. I am so old apparently that my date of birth doesn't exist 😂

Bloodylovecheese · 23/03/2025 17:01

If you'd have asked me when I was 23 if I would ever not want to go clubbing, I.would have said never in a million years. At 58 it's a 'God no!', and has been for at least 5 years
I love a few drinks and a dance, but even going into town at 10pm after drinks at home is a massive 'can't be arsed' 🤣

ItsUpToYou · 23/03/2025 17:02

You’re doing better than me, OP. I stopped booking standing tickets 5 years ago and I was in my twenties!

Misorchid · 23/03/2025 17:03

Realising matinee performances were a good idea.

When someone offered me their seat on a bus 😕

Getting my state pension.

Got an inkling at 39 when the film Tristan and iseult was released and the gorgeous Rufus Sewell was not cast as Tristan but as king mark... Properly realised at 56 when I visited an outdoor museum that had a parade of shops from the 1970s and I recognised every item sold in the pharmacy/drugstore, then thought omfg, my youth is is in a museum....

One of our volunteers was having problems with her UC claim and I asked her if she'd had her giro yet. She hadn't a clue what I meant.

Seeing my wrinkles after cataract surgery. I thought I only looked 45. Wrongo !!!

Staying in a Youth Hostel dormitory in Venice: all my roommates had introduced themselves and seemed very nice. New roommate bursts into the room and announces that she's been invited to a party by a local and does anyone else want to come? Cue everyone else in the room excitedly exclaiming that they'd love to join her. Me, on my bunk, thinking "YES! They're all going to go out and I'll have the whole room to myself to read my book in peace and quiet". That's when I knew I was old...(I was in my mid 40s)
I should mention that they had strict age limits on the Youth Hostel but I looked younger and "accidentally on purpose" had left my passport with a friend so couldn't produce it on demand for age verification. Youth Hostel was waaaay cheaper than any other accommodation so I bucked the system by pretending to be 39.

When someone (the bastard) gave me a helium balloon with 50 on for my birthday. 50! All the air left my lungs and I was like how the absolute fuck did that happen? That said, I ran 20 miles yesterday and feel remarkably sprightly today so maybe I'm not ready for the chipper just yet.

Gingernaut · 23/03/2025 17:10

I work in healthcare

When I speak to a mother born in 2004 and realise she's 21.

Leaves me stunned every time

Disturbia81 · 23/03/2025 17:10

45 and not felt it yet, and hopefully won’t for a long time yet.
Think it’s partly health, partly attitude

Call it God, Karma, nature whatever is kind to us as we age. Our eyesight gets fuzzy. I can look in the mirror in the morning & think 'Hey Girl you still got it' then I put my glasses on & think OMG get those specs off quick! 😂

A few years ago I saw an old lady in the shop window, assumed she was behind me...

Few years ago I looked out of the window, was dark and I had lights on. Thought my mother was coming up the drive, nope it was my reflection.

YourBestFriend · 23/03/2025 17:11

At 45 I still mosh pit pretty hard so nice to see I am still young then.

Opinionsprettyplease · 23/03/2025 17:11

When it snows and all you can think of is getting wet and cold 😭

Knickknacketty · 23/03/2025 17:12

Younger than you but when I couldn’t remember if a certain actor had died and I debated it with my husband - then felt like my parents 😂

When I started making a noise every time I got in or out of a chair.

Longsummerdays25 · 23/03/2025 17:16

When flights of any description became an endurance rather than excitement! But maybe that’s because they are nowhere near as good now and are exhausting.

I swing from feeling great to feeling drained so quickly (52) and feeling young when I hear music, learn something new, exercise or feeling ancient going to bed so early with bed socks on relieved not to have to go anywhere!

catzrulz · 23/03/2025 17:18

Getting contact lenses and doing my make up with them in, using a magnifying mirror.
NOT a good idea, saw my Gran looking back at me, never mind my Mum.

SpanThatWorld · 23/03/2025 17:21

A new job meant I was commuting on the tube for the first time in years and suddenly I was being offered seats.
