To think that people call others ‘selfish’ not because they actually are being ‘selfish’ in the everyday sense but because the person is not doing what they want?

“Selfish” and “not doing what I want you to do” are easily conflated by some people.

Very context-dependent. Sometimes people are being selfish, sometimes the asker is being unreasonable.

So without specifics, it's hard to say.

PullTheBricksDown · 23/03/2025 11:10

Oh yes, absolutely. Of course it's dependent on the situation but there's plenty of 'selfish' = 'not rolling over and doing exactly what l want' about. And it works because many people are horrified to think anyone might see them as selfish.

CarpetSlipper · 23/03/2025 11:13

Yes, if an individual frequently thinks others are selfish then the likelihood is that they are the selfish person.

Redpeach · 23/03/2025 11:13

Dropping litter is selfish

Yes - totally agree. ‘Selfish’ imo is a definite ‘act’ - like dropping litter - my mum called me selfish just for liking my own company!

Childfree people get this CONSTANTLY.

Having a child and then not looking after it properly is selfish. But you can't harm a person who doesn't exist. Bonkers.

I think if more women prioritised themselves the world would be a better place. I unapologetically centre myself. This doesn’t mean I behave badly towards other people, or don’t help other people, or am a bad parent, it means that I don’t martyr myself and then seethe with resentment because other people don’t do the same.
