To find a musical comedy about Titanic distasteful?

Anyone watching the BBC’s “Big Night of Musicals” right now?

How did this Titanic show get the go-ahead? Thousands died!! Very weird.

I was just thinking the same thing

Gundogday · 22/03/2025 20:12

There’s lots of tv programmes and films based around the wars and horrific events, such as Blitz, Dunkirk, and Dambusters, to name a few. Do you object to these as well?

No, of course of not. This musical appears to be a comedy though - making jokes about the captain’s bad eyesight etc

TBF - the Dambusters isn't a comedy

Cadenza12 · 22/03/2025 20:15

I thought the same. It also sank in 1912, I know it's not a documentary but still.

There's been musical comedies about the second world war and the Vietnam war and hundreds of other events where people died. Just because something exists doesn't mean it's distasteful. It all depends on how it's handled.

So what about Dad’s Army or Blackadder?

Operation Mincemeat is an example

It's a story where a dead body was used in a deception operation to ensure the Sicilly Invasion went ahead.

Figgygal · 22/03/2025 20:17

It's a parody of the movie not the disaster
From the perspective of Celine Dion
And it's called Titanique BTW

There is however a very well regarded musical called titanic if you would like something more sombre

DoAWheelie · 22/03/2025 20:18

How long after an event do you think comedy is acceptable OP? Or do you think people dying is always a no-go topic?

PinkStarsandBlackWalls · 22/03/2025 20:18

Horrible Histories for adults?

Tiddlersfish · 22/03/2025 20:18

I just said the same to DH, I feel quite torn as it looks quite funny yet a part of me feels it’s quite distasteful.
Having said that I can’t pass full judgement on a 2 minute snippet. I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has seen the full show

Well that's written off Les Mis. I'm sure there's a joke or two with Thenardier

maddiemookins16mum · 22/03/2025 20:21

YANBU and I’m also not a fan of Layton so there’s another reason to give this one a miss.

Edited

I really don't think Les Mis is a comedy.

Hope you never find out about Oh What a Lovely War!

cakeorwine · 22/03/2025 20:30

There's a show called Springtime for Hitler that should be mentioned here. Apparently it has dancing Nazi stormtroopers.

Pizzledog · 22/03/2025 20:32

More importantly it looked absolutely bloody awful!

That's the musical within the musical of The Producers.

Has Cabaret been mentioned? A musical comedy about Nazi Germany.
