people put their very small children on the 'phone to me or make them leave a message?

It really gets up my nose. MIL makes her two year old granddaughter leave nonsensical messages for my DCs. I just think it's a moronic thing to do and a waste of my time.

And the person who does it must have the brain of a sheep.

I don't like it either.

I hate this with a passion too..the old "oh little so and so wants to speak to you". no thanks, I didn't ring to speak to a 18 month old that won't answer me anyway.

Even worse is when people have children of a similar age to yours and still expect you to be amazed when their's do the same as yours!!!! I have been known to do it if my child (only one of them has been like this) shouts to do it and then I apologise let them say something for a second and then take the phone away .
It's the boasting or 'isn't he/she cute?' element that really annoys me though!!!

MilkMonitor · 13/05/2008 20:01

Thank god for that. I thought I'd get flamed for being a miserable old grump. I'm not at all - I just have enough of talking baby talk to my own, thanks.

Why do people do it? That age old nothing-better-to-do? Do it elsewhere thanks!

Personally I find it rather charming.

YANBU if it's a question of adults forcing them to leave messages or talk against their will

but my dd went through a stage of wanting to copy me in EVERY way - and if I spoke on the phone - she wanted to as well ...

so perhaps your view is 'em ... a little extreme perhaps ... ??

Weegle · 13/05/2008 20:02

I hate it too - my best friend insists on doing it. Drives me nuts but I don't want to offend her. Or, even more annoyingly, she'll talk to her children whilst on the phone - not a 2 second prevent-a-whinge talk but full on "you did painting at pre-school didn't you?" type chat and I just think I don't have time for this!

BroccoliSpears · 13/05/2008 20:02

I do this!

I put our 2-year-old on the phone to the whole family. She never says a word and I leave them desparately wittering in that sing-song voice for ages. Arf.

Sometimes I even leave people on the phone to my 2-year-old while I pop upstairs to get the baby.

Aren't you glad you're not related to me?

dizzydixies · 13/05/2008 20:03

my dd1 phones my aunt and leaves messages but the first thing I know about it is when she phones back and asks to speak to dd1

speed dials have a lot to answer for!!

WinkyWinkola · 13/05/2008 20:03

No, not the crime of the century but just one of those things that annoy me too. Mind you, after the day I've just had it wouldn't take much to annoy me!
