To think that replying to every “happy birthday” message is unnecessary?

When it’s your birthday, people send messages out of politeness but does every single one require a response? Some are heartfelt but others feel like generic obligations. AIBU to think it’s okay to just acknowledge them mentally and move on?

How long does it take to type thanks x

Shabbysock · 20/03/2025 16:51

If it's a short generic happy birthday I just send ❤️ or similar. I couldn't leave it unacknowledged.

CheeseyOnionPie · 20/03/2025 16:52

Yes. It’s polite to acknowledge every message. They took the time to wish you happy birthday so you should take the time to say thanks.

Sleepington · 20/03/2025 16:52

YABU.

Maybe the people who bother to send or wish you a birthday greeting should just do it mentally too.

Freedompassed · 20/03/2025 16:53

It's not hard to reply briefly when people have taken time even with what you deem a generic message. Do you judge the cards people send too? Only thank the nicer card givers?

If someone has taken the time to message you personally, then you should respond.

If it's the generic ones on FB then you can just like it rather than respond individually.

Geez how many messages do you get? I get maybe 5 friends text, doesn’t take 2 seconds to reply “thanks 🩷”
