My hand is itchy, burning, sore! And I'm about to cut it off! I've had it once before and was given steroid cream, didn't say what it actually was but it's back it's worse and I want to scream! Any ideas of what it is??

Looks like my pompholux eczema

FeelLikeGivingUpButCant · 20/03/2025 17:19

This is how my pomphylox always starts, it burns like a motherfucker!

'Pompholyx, also called dyshidrotic eczema, is a skin condition where you get itchy blisters on your hands and feet.

The main symptoms of pompholyx are itchy blisters on your palms, the sides of your fingers and sometimes the soles of your feet.

You can get treatments for pompholyx like emollients and antihistamines from a pharmacy. If these do not work, a GP may prescribe a steroid cream.

It's not clear what causes pompholyx, but things that may make it worse include some skin infections, certain metals and chemicals, and stress.'

OP can you make an appointment to see your GP and ask for a referral to rheumatology? I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis two years ago and this exactly how it started, and your photos look exactly the same as my fingers during a flare up. Your description of the combined itching and burning sensations are the same too.

I had to insist on a referral from my GP despite the fact that he didn’t know what the problem was, and eventually got a referral to a dermatologist, who took one look and referred me to rheumatology, who first suspected Lupus, but after blood tests and X rays eventually diagnosed the onset of RA.

i would urge you to do this sooner rather than later because the treatment of RA has changed a lot and if they catch it early enough the treatments are designed to make you more comfortable and also stop joint deterioration.

If you cut it off you may get phantom pain which is probably worse and longer lasting.

But the up side is that if it's the left hand I have spare prosthetics in various sizes.

123456thu · 20/03/2025 17:26

@Lovelysausagedogscrumpy my granny had that and I remember the pain she would get with it, sorry you have this. I'll definitely look into this, thank you.

@MargaretThursday looking back now it's eased a little bit I might of being a little ott, but at the time it seemed like a reasonable thing to do 😂

This thread just shows how useless MN is for medical advice. Allergic reaction, arthritis, cellulitis, eczema, impetigo, herpes... everyone's trying to help but nobody really knows. Just go to your doctor, OP. Hope you feel better soon.

123456thu · 20/03/2025 17:39

@DearBee thank you, someone has to be right though right? 😂and honestly the doctors isn't much better, I took my daughter to the doctors the other week, because she was really poorly, got sent to a&e with suspected appendicitis, then got sent home with tonsillitis, turn out to be hand foot and month. Lol

Er, if your daughter had hand foot and mouth a week ago, have you thought that maybe you’ve caught that from her? Hope you heal quickly whatever it is.

Adults can get hand foot and mouth - I caught it off my daughter and felt rubbish!!! I had a couple
of mouth ulcers and my feet were a bit sore but nothing visible. Hope you feel better soon x

ClaireEclair · 20/03/2025 17:50

It looks like an insect bite to me. The circle in the middle is pale compared to the redness. I’ve been bitten just sitting in pubs before. I got a bite on my finger like that last year when I was in Paris sitting outside in a bar. I never saw the insect that did it but it drove me crazy and was itchy for a long time and then it seemed to come back in the same place a month later. It left a tiny raised lump for a few months but it’s gone now.

123456thu · 20/03/2025 17:51

When I say the other week I mean, begining of last half term thinking about it lol don't think it's that, they are more little blisters, We've had it in the house a few times I spotted that the second the spots appeared.
They don't appear normally till after you are poorly for a few days

@Lilactimes Definitely not hand foot and mouth, I had it about 5 years ago when my eldest got it, it was bloody awful

Things I would try - a cold pack, natural joghurt, hand bath with apple cider vinegar or baking soda, lavender essential oil. fenistil gel or any other antihistamine potion or tablets/sirup. Grapefruit seed oil or tincture.

notforonesecond · 20/03/2025 17:57

That’s what my finger would look like if I got bitten by a mosquito because I get skeeter syndrome.

Lyannaa · 20/03/2025 17:57

If it’s itching, it could be contact dermatitis.

Katyrosebug · 20/03/2025 18:02

Not sure if anyone has commented yet, my dad has this about 2 months ago, started like yours has and it was cellulitis, he needed up in hospital and they cut it open after a 4 day stay trying to get the infection down and cleaned it out. He dies havw diabetes though and is 59 so thay added to it. I'd double check though because his ended up being serious as he just ignored it and thought it would get better

MrsPeregrine · 20/03/2025 18:03

Chilblaines possibly. I had an insanely itchy toe a few weeks ago. The next day it was fine.

Hysterectomynext · 20/03/2025 18:11

123456thu · 20/03/2025 16:15

@Hysterectomynext I remember my mum telling me I'd get that from putting my feet on our old little fire when I was little. Lol it does feel like it's coming on my feet too now. 😂

I would put money on this. I’m good at diagnosing

neverhappenedtopablopicasso · 20/03/2025 18:14

HC45 and an anti-histamine

WillowKnicks · 20/03/2025 18:16

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned but I think it could be dyshidrotic eczema.

I get it on my fingers sometimes, usually when I'm stressed or not so will. It's little fluid filled blisters that itch & burn.

I take fexofenadine daily anyway & put hydrocortisone cream on, which I know hasn't helped you in this instance.

Could it be you are developing an allergy?

LionAndEmperor13 · 20/03/2025 18:40

If it's spreading definitely go to the doctor, I had cellulitis a few years ago and it can be very serious. Drawn a pen line around the redness and check if / how much it's spreading. I needed IV antibiotics every 2 hours and had to stay in hospital overnight, then IV antibiotics daily for the next 10 days.

FuckityFux · 20/03/2025 18:44

I’d bet anything that you’ve become allergic to the nail products. Take them off immediately and give it a few weeks before trying again, if you want to risk it.

An allergy can develop at any time and usually the symptoms get more severe each time you’re exposed to the substance you’re allergic to.

Mine started with small blisters and I didn’t realise what was causing it. When I started struggling to breathe, I realised it was serious and my GP diagnosed me. She referred me to a Consultant Dermatologist and I had a patch test done on my back to determine what chemicals I was allergic to.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 20/03/2025 18:56

Pompolyx eczema? I get it horribly on my hands and it burns and itches so much, with tiny blisters that weep a lot if I scratch them. Do these symptoms sound familiar?
