My hand is itchy, burning, sore! And I'm about to cut it off! I've had it once before and was given steroid cream, didn't say what it actually was but it's back it's worse and I want to scream! Any ideas of what it is??

@Mossstitch no I had something similar about 4 months ago, but no where near as bad, they gave me steroid cream, no perfume or anything. The nurse didn't really know what it was so just gave that and it cleared up eventually.

I can't see the photos (my phone won't load them). Could it be a reaction to fibreglass? I once leant on a play structure that apparently was made from it & had a terrible reaction.
You could try submerging your hands in a bowl of water with bicarbonate of soda in it. Might offer some relief from the itching.
Hope you manage to find a solution soon.

I can’t see the photos, they won’t load, but in spring when it first gets properly sunny I get an itchy rash all over from light sensitivity. It happens every year and after a week or two my body gets used to the sun and it goes away. It’s called photo-something. It’s unpleasant, my face sometimes gets lots of little red spots and my arms itch like MAD! It’s something people experience more as they get older.

If you’re really uncomfy head to there pharmacy, they should be able to identify what’s happening and give you something to soothe.

@Hysterectomynext I remember my mum telling me I'd get that from putting my feet on our old little fire when I was little. Lol it does feel like it's coming on my feet too now. 😂

Do you antihistamines?

123456thu · 20/03/2025 16:16

@gamerchick @Crunchymum @Mossstitch would contact dermatitis just come on my hands and feet? No where else?

Could be a false widow bite, I got one a couple of years ago hanging the washing out and it looked just like that and felt like a bee sting.

Lovemycat2023 · 20/03/2025 16:21

Sometimes something is just so bloody itchy and nothing you do will help. I had that with bites last year. Stopped me sleeping for two nights. You have my sympathy OP.

123456thu · 20/03/2025 16:21

@waverleywitch that sounds awful, it's come up in spots on the other side of my hand and I think it's coming on my feet so I don't think it's a bite.

Have you had your nails done recently? I get similar and it’s the resin and/or Uv I’m allergic to. I also get it on my face which is hideous.

Yes this is what I came to say too - I am also allergic to gel nails. It only gets worse too, so please don’t be like me and try to persevere in case it ‘goes away’.

SnoozingFox · 20/03/2025 16:24

Piriton is what you need.

pearlsofcats · 20/03/2025 16:26

Not wearing something from Shein/Temu?

123456thu · 20/03/2025 16:27

@Newyearsameolme I've had them done for years, the stopped got them again about 7 weeks ago, so I'm pretty sure it's not that. But having them done while I have this (nowhere near as bad) really hasn't helped. The other hand is completely fine though

OP posts:
123456thu · 20/03/2025 16:28

@pearlsofcats no, nothing from them or anything new.

Whatever antihistamines you've taken, take a different one. I find fexofenadine better than any of the others.

tobee · 20/03/2025 16:29

They are nice nails tbf!

historyismything82 · 20/03/2025 16:29

Looks like chillblains to me. Try and keep warm and maybe put Aveeno or suchlike on it.

nonevernotever · 20/03/2025 16:30

I get bouts of something that looks very similar. It's more frequent when I'm stressed. Various drs have said things like discoid eczema, contact dermatitis or even ringworm, though the eczema/dermatitis suggestions come up most often. The thing that really helps me is putting a really thick layer of savlon cream on (several mm thick if you can manage it), leaving it for a few minutes for some of it to soak in, and then putting a plaster over it. If it's that you have all my sympathy -at it's worst I'm desperately trying to stop myself gnawing my fingers off to stop the itching.

Renamed · 20/03/2025 16:32

Is it pompholyx? The only thing that cleared that for me was a holiday! Assume the sunlight. Been taking vitamin D ever since

minmooch · 20/03/2025 16:33

Looks like pompholyx eczema to me. I get it on my hands and feet. Are they tiny fluid filled blisters?

LBFseBrom · 20/03/2025 16:33

Take an antihistamine and for future reference, try an antihistamine cream like Brulidine and/or an anti-itch cream like Eurax. I have itchy hands and fingers sometimes and that works for me pretty quickly.

Please try to identify what causes this, eg is it something you have eaten or touched? It's not always easy to find out, especially if you think you haven't done anything unusual, but something has caused this reaction. I know what triggers mine but it could happen out of the blue.

Keep hands cool, wear rubber gloves when doing anything involving detergent or washing up liquid.

Stravaig · 20/03/2025 16:37

Looks like chilblains to me. If the conditions fit - a recent cold snap, moving between warmer and icy temps? Affects fingers and/or toes. Looks like a tiny bite at first, but feels itchy under the skin, then hot and swollen, sometimes blisters, and very painful.

Kneeboobs · 20/03/2025 16:40

Can't help with what it is but do try pure aloe Vera, works wonders.

IKnowASecret · 20/03/2025 16:40

Keep an eye on your temperature. Very unlikely but if you're running a temp it might be something like cellulitis which can make things puffy and sore and I think that can need antibiotics.
