To not use proper spellings when naming your child

Am I being unreasonable to think it's ridiculous to use a funky spelling of a normal name. I spent today dealing with lost paperwork for a child as the person that took the details didn't think to check the spelling as there is no other spelling of the name.

It looks silly and just causes no end of problems for the child. It also disadvantages them as straight away people get an image of what the child is like.

I work somewhere where there is a sign to contact Kacper if you need a certain thing doing. I spent months thinking that's an unusual name until I realised it was a funky spelling of Casper. Parents obviously didn't know the letter c only makes 's' when followed by i, e or y.

Edited

This is a genuine Russian spelling though, not a stupid illiterate one

Nearly all my friends and DC’s friends are adoptive families. They tend to be more understanding of our situation. One of the children I’m referring to is a sibling of my own DC, adopted into a different family. I also work in a related profession.

Nearly all your friends have adopted unsafe children with names that need tweaking? Where is this happening that there are clusters of unsafe adopted children all in the same social circle? And they have names that can be rendered safe by spelling changes.
lovely that the people close to you are understanding of your situation as they are in the same situation.

minnienono · 19/03/2025 18:51

@tulippa

thats the polish spelling

Feelingstrange2 · 19/03/2025 18:52

It's hilarious

And they are always the Mums that complain about people spelling their DCs name wrong.

aprilshowers2015 · 19/03/2025 18:52

I know a Shivorne Blush she was born pre internet days and parents heard it, liked it, didn't know how to spell it.

MidnightMillie · 19/03/2025 18:53

Am I the only one who was stumped by the thread title?

"Am I being unreasonable to not use proper spellings when naming your child?"

You didn't name my child OP, I don't even know you! 😬🤣

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2025 18:53

I wanted to use a K instead of a C for a letter in DS's name as thats the spelling in DH home country and I love it BUT our surname causes problems most of the time so I figured I would give him 1 name that was easily spelt

BarneyRonson · 19/03/2025 18:53

I think Kacper is probably called Kac for short.

which was nice.

XWKD · 19/03/2025 18:53

It makes the parents look like ignorant yobs. In America they'd have the children in beauty pageants.

IggyAce · 19/03/2025 18:54

I know a Jorja and Ellah. I’ve heard of Louee.

I think you've misread here.

Adoptive families tend to meet up with other adoptive families fir support and understanding.

Similarly, I know very large numbers of autistic children because we went to autism support groups and an autism-friendly school.

It's not that every she knows has since adopted children.

Rachie1973 · 19/03/2025 18:54

I have custody of 2 granddaughters. I really did have to argue with their parents to not register them Fayth and Ope.

There’s a Reignbeau at dds nursery

This is surely NOT TRUE!

MementoMountain · 19/03/2025 18:56

We know a Rainbeau, but they clearly didn't have the courage of their convictions to go the whole hog.

I wouldn't assume that.

I'm Irish and for many years a lot of us have been moving away from Gaelic spellings.

I have a cousin named Shinaed and she's in her late 40s.

Livpool · 19/03/2025 18:56

Saddling the child with a lifetime of correcting how people spell their name

This comment made me spit out my Pepsay 🤣🤣🤣🤣

MrsSunshine2b · 19/03/2025 18:57

There's a group on facebook called "That Name is a Tragedeigh" devoted to these kinds of awful names. Parents trying extremely hard to stand out as special when naming their baby instead of thinking about what is going to be a good name for their child going through life almost inevitably end up being the parents who bring up children who stand out for all the wrong reasons.

SpencerTheRover · 19/03/2025 18:57

I used to work with children and have come across some absolute beauties; not necessarily the spelling but, more often than not it was a case of ‘where on earth did you come up with that?’
What grates like nails down a blackboard these days are the unusual spellings of my own name.
It was bad enough when I was a kid and they were the errors!
Is that with a K?
Oh is that starting with a K and with double E, N at the end.
Nope, it is the old fashioned boring way that my Dad thought you couldn’t abbreviate or mess around with 😂

I just said ‘ f*ck off ‘ out loud 🤦🏻‍♀️

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 19/03/2025 18:58

I remember having a Sian at school, all the teachers pronounced it Sharn. Like the actor Sian Philips. The girl would correct them. No Miss/Sir
It's See Ann.
It was hard to forget that one.
