To not use proper spellings when naming your child

Am I being unreasonable to think it's ridiculous to use a funky spelling of a normal name. I spent today dealing with lost paperwork for a child as the person that took the details didn't think to check the spelling as there is no other spelling of the name.

It looks silly and just causes no end of problems for the child. It also disadvantages them as straight away people get an image of what the child is like.

I've seen

Jaymz
Ezmay
Lil-leigh

People can spell names how they like. We have to deal with all sorts of names these days so what's the difference? My kids have names associated with their ethnicity - Im sure someone things Im funny with hiw I spell my sons name because its pronounced just like an English name.

Bigger and worse things to get het up on esp as our language is hardly straight forward with its silent letters and multiple ways to pronounce the same letters in different words, one gone, scone, bone etc...

YABU.

empee47 · 19/03/2025 21:32

People who choose a silly spelling usually do so for attention or to stand out as unique when in reality their choice of spelling is plain stupid. Worst one I ever saw was Mykayla for Michaela but some of these on other posts are making me howl with laughter 😂

I work somewhere where there is a sign to contact Kacper if you need a certain thing doing. I spent months thinking that's an unusual name until I realised it was a funky spelling of Casper. Parents obviously didn't know the letter c only makes 's' when followed by i, e or y.

Edited

It’s the polish spelling 🙄

I know of a Jorja. Also an Abigayil. Both adults. I’m mostly baffled by Abigayil choosing to keep her ridiculous spelling.

I know of a child Patzi, renesmee (I’m not sure if it’s now officially a name since twilight but come on), countless spellings of Emily such as Emma-Leigh, emalie and Emmilie. Came across an Ameilia the other day. Why add an extra i? What’s the point?! It was pronounced like Amelia. And she went by Milly anyway. I’ve come across daize recently too which I presumed was the same as Daze but was actually daisy. Also come across a Bayli and an Ajay.

if I came across Llayceigh as a Welsh person I’d be so confused if they had attempted Lleucu and got mixed up along the way. I’d probably pronounce it as lleucu and not even consider Lacey!

Ajay is a super common Indian name.

Thank you so much for enlightening those of us who were scratching our heads. I'm sure tulippa particularly will be pleased that she is able to learn something today.

And while I'm here, will anyone with online banking please cancel the cheque?

You're being very patient about it! Grin

Counsel the cheack Wink

Is that the Czech spelling? That makes a very welcome change on this thread Grin

I'll raise you Jaxon (Jackson), Korra (Cora), Leigha (Leah) and Emme (Emmy).

Emme is Spanish, I considered it for DD as we are Spanish but decided it would look yoonoque in the UK.
It's Jennifer Lopez's daughters name.

@tulippa thanks you, she's learned something new today, particularly over the last 3 hours.

😂😂 I’m dead 😂😂

Kzb9 · 19/03/2025 21:46

Tell me about it. My non-standard spelling totally transforms my middle class name and shows my working class roots (which I’m proud of) before I even open my mouth or indeed before anyone even meets me. But that doesn’t bother me really; it’s how often I have to say “No, I don’t know why my mother made that decision to spell my name like that.”

PluckedOutOfThinAir · 19/03/2025 21:36

Ajay is a super common Indian name.

Yes I know someone else mentioned in their reply earlier.

this Ajay was not Indian and didn’t pronounce it the Indian way. His parents wanted to call him AJ and then went for Ajay and pronounced it AJ

brunettemic · 19/03/2025 21:48

Someone at work said the other day people at the registry office should have the right of temporary veto and tell people to come back. Can’t help but think they’re onto something 😂

@Namechangetry that reminds me of a parent who I asked about the French first name her son had. This was about 30 years ago in a really rough area. A tough school. No connection at all to France Mum just liked the name. At least it was spelled correctly. I also mentioned in passing to another parent the very unusual surname her son had. I wondered about its origins? She said ‘I wouldn’t know I only met his Dad the once’ 😂 Then there was the poor child called BJ. I could probably write a book. Oh and don’t you think poor @tulippa has suffered enough for her mistake. How many more are going to tell her the same thing?

I went to school with a BeeJay. Always thought it was an interesting choice.

In this last hour I have found myself miraculously pregnant, aged 49 by my Polish neighbour who waved at me once.
A baby boy is due any day. We're struggling to agree on a name...

I suggested Jasper, but he doesn't think it's Polish enough.

We can't think of an alternative.

I guess we'll just have to get the baby adopted!

If I’m remembering it correctly, the first Freakanomics book - years ago now - correlated “unique” spellings with low levels of high school attainment in the parent/s in the US.

I can’t say I’m remotely surprised. I dare say there will be evidence that parents of the unfortunate children with ‘youneek’ names are somewhat thicker than average.

Deacon is the 1st name of the main Character in the Game\Film Days Gone

I think its American

Deacon Blue :)

We're the band named after someone called Deacon Blue? I just assumed they chose 2 random words they liked the sound of 😂

SinnerBoy · 19/03/2025 21:53

I posted some time ago that there was a drawer I saw in my daughter's school - Y1 - at parents' evening:

Jackxxson

Yeah, mam and dad, good luck with that in later life, when people spell it normally and he gets upset...

Perhaps he'd be happier with Jacper?

Dayzee

My late aunt's name was Daisy. She hated it. In her teens she went through a brief phase of spelling it Dayzee.

Or trying to insist you use their whole double/triple barrelled name.

"Uh, her name is not Lily, it's Lyllee-Maebelynne-Pixieboo."

Now look what you've done (pic) 🤣

The worst one I've ever seen was T'Kila, pronounced Tequila. As in, I wanted to name my baby Tequila but was too drunk to spell it.

Really hard to explain without giving too much info - the name was already v unusual, we weren’t allowed to change it, so we changed it phonetically if that makes sense?

I have friends who adopted their children (the children are full siblings). They have unusual names with strange spellings, and I suspect that they were in a similar position to you.

Got to be either from the Bible or Shakespeare or Royalty for me...

Well I have a young relative named Cobweb. Fine Shakespearean name.
