Wife did embarrassing thing in hotel, now DD is copying – WWYD?

Posting here because I genuinely don’t know how to handle this without causing WW3 with DW.

We were on a family weekend away a couple of weeks ago, staying in a nice(ish) hotel. DW has this (in my opinion) mortifying habit of calling out “Housekeeping!” in a sing-song voice before entering a room, including our own hotel room. No idea why, she thinks it’s hilarious.

Anyway, fast forward to this week and now DD (4) has started doing it CONSTANTLY. Every time she walks into a room at home, at PIL’s house, even at nursery drop-off! This morning she did it in M&S toilets when someone was actually in there, and I nearly died of embarrassment.

I gently mentioned to DW that maybe we should stop encouraging it, and she got all huffy, saying it’s just a bit of fun and I need to lighten up. But I can’t be the only one who thinks this is just Not A Thing normal people do??

AIBU to want this to stop before DD starts doing it at school? WWYD?

Why does your wife do that? It's not even funny. I'd be pissed off after the first time. Can't you ask her to stop doing it as it's irritating.

FFS is that it? I was lured to this thread thinking I was going to hear that your wife had ripped off a massive fart while having breakfast or something 😂

Massively overreacting in my opinion. You definitely need to lighten up.

Agree! I thought it was going to be about stealing the toiletries.

What? I was disappointed ☹️

I, too, was lured to this thread in hopes of some Bridget Jones style tale of a faux pas in naice company. Goosing the vicar at a society christening or some such.

BarneyRonson · 19/03/2025 18:34

I think OP is thirteen and gets embarrassed over anything and everything, OR dislikes the wife generally so nitpicks OR has no sense of humour OR …..no that’s as many possibilities I can think of.

Hyperbowl · 19/03/2025 18:35

She is four years of age. Four year olds come out with funny/weird things all the time and repeat stuff they’ve heard continuously because they’re not old enough to know any better. I’d book a GP appointment to see about getting that stick removed from your ass. Mortifying. 🙄

offmynut · 19/03/2025 18:36

I think its one of them thing if you see it happen you get what op means.
My own mother was like it but only them that saw her got what i was on about.
Like public loos she would shout out loud coming through sorry lady times happening every time she or anyone with her needed the loo when we was out.
Or if she needed to ask for help in a shop or anywhere for that matter she would click her fingers saying ding ding you come here while wagging the other finger to call someone over .
This rubbed off on my brother he was younger than all us and it was embarrassing to see both of them do it.
He would do the same thing at the public loos too really loud its mans time let me through.
As i said you have to be there and see it to get what i mean.

We experienced a similar thing after the little one watched an episode of Dixon of Dock Green' with us. After which she would approach everybody in the street with a...
"Hello, hello, hello. What's going on here then, me lad?"
It was rather embarrassing although, to be fair, she did prevent a heist at a local jeweller's shop, a ne'er do well, doing 'I don't know what' in a passage way, and a dog defecating at a bus stop.

SlightlyJaded · 19/03/2025 18:47

I can't actually believe that this non-event has driven you to post on MN. I'm not being spiteful, it's just so.... nothing. Over the years we have all gone through stages of saying things that we find amusing or not, me, DH, DC - it's not 'weird' - its what normal people do?

I am trying to imagine how dull and serious the tone of conversation is for this to be a 'stand out', and I can't. I can't imagine it.

Oh please do share some of the shit your kids did, to show OP just how ridiculous it is to be mortified by this obviously😁

My daughter's 8-year- old friend once regaled the whole school bus with a story about her mother's explosive diarrhoea (I think the poor woman has IBS). Granted, the mother was not actually there to be mortified, but my daughter told me about it in great detail later, and I have been mortified on her behalf since.

@pbopkg is that you?! 😴😴

VerySkilledFirefighter · 19/03/2025 19:12

Is this not a totally standard joke… me and DH do this every time we knock on a hotel door (usually when the other one is in the room, and one of us is coming back in). It’s a lame practical joke that we might be the cleaner coming in…

I’n not even a bubbly centre of attention “look how quirky I am” jokey sort of person, it’s more of a silly tradition. I can’t imagine annoying being mortified by it, and it being anything other than silly and cute if a child copied it out of context.

brettsalanger · 19/03/2025 19:17

I was expecting to read she shit on the floor or something.

you are being ridiculous

LSTMS30555 · 19/03/2025 19:30

Op you've never seen family guy obviously. BTW your wife & child sound fun!

LSTMS30555 · 19/03/2025 19:39

WavyRavey · 19/03/2025 17:03

Me and my husband do it with the standard Mexican voice (we're Hispanic before anyone starts) 😂

more lemon pledge 🤣 glad someone gets it!

pbopkg · 19/03/2025 15:30

Fair enough, maybe I am being a bit uptight about it. Just worried she’s going to do it in some really inappropriate setting (imagine at a doctor’s surgery or a school assembly!). But if the general consensus is that it’s harmless and she’ll grow out of it, I’ll try to chill out.

Don’t know why those are particularly inappropriate settings…?! 4 year olds will say a lot worse than that anywhere. Chill… if anything it’s hilarious, not remotely embarrassing.

Bellyblueboy · 19/03/2025 19:44

I would find this incredibly irritating. She thinks she is hilarious but it’s just annoying.

BelloItalia · 19/03/2025 19:53

That’s the kind of annoying thing my husband would do - funny the first time … 10th time not so much

LadyRoughDiamond · 19/03/2025 20:09

Gently, OP, this is a you problem not a her problem. Your social insecurity is impacting your primary relationships.

ohyesido · 19/03/2025 20:18

It’s from Family Guy. Peter Griffin does it in a cutaway, if you’re interested

treesandsun · 19/03/2025 20:37

My son was practising his reading by reading the posters on the wall at the walk in centre - wear condoms one said - cue what are condoms and where do you wear them said very loudly as lots of people waiting were sniggering.
My friend's daughter told the cashier in the supermarket - my mums had a red wee!

MindfulAndDemure · 19/03/2025 20:40

Is she saying it in a sing song voice, or is it more of a cod accent type thing?

Ontherocksthisyear · 19/03/2025 20:58

Your wife is hilarious. You need to lighten up

LittleBigHead · 19/03/2025 21:04

I’m with you @pbopkg it’s an annoying habit. And very lower middle class ….

We do it too! Have done for decades (and have never seen Family Guy!) - I thought it was just us!
