Wife did embarrassing thing in hotel, now DD is copying – WWYD?

Posting here because I genuinely don’t know how to handle this without causing WW3 with DW.

We were on a family weekend away a couple of weeks ago, staying in a nice(ish) hotel. DW has this (in my opinion) mortifying habit of calling out “Housekeeping!” in a sing-song voice before entering a room, including our own hotel room. No idea why, she thinks it’s hilarious.

Anyway, fast forward to this week and now DD (4) has started doing it CONSTANTLY. Every time she walks into a room at home, at PIL’s house, even at nursery drop-off! This morning she did it in M&S toilets when someone was actually in there, and I nearly died of embarrassment.

I gently mentioned to DW that maybe we should stop encouraging it, and she got all huffy, saying it’s just a bit of fun and I need to lighten up. But I can’t be the only one who thinks this is just Not A Thing normal people do??

AIBU to want this to stop before DD starts doing it at school? WWYD?

Isn’t it just inspired by a clip from Family Guy? Where Peter is dressed as a maid and says ‘housekeeping!!’ That’s what it reminded me of anyway, and the thought of my own four year old doing that is delightful.

2JFDIYOLO · 20/03/2025 23:36

Remembering the packed morning train and a little girl with a megaphone voice:

"MUMMY. WHERE DO BABIES COME FROM .... MUMMY. WHY IS EVERYBODY LAUGHING."

Also, in a very few years, every single thing you do, say, wear, are etc will be cringemakeingly embarrassing ... To her.

Your time will come. 😈

Orangeandpinknails · 20/03/2025 23:46

This is hilarious I think you need to lighten up

Daftypants · 20/03/2025 23:48

Sorry but I’d laugh at a small child coming into M&S toilet and saying “ housekeeping! “ it’s silly but really not that embarrassing

Picklepower · 20/03/2025 19:39

People have little jokes with their children. Just because you're a misery guts doesn't mean she's idiotic. People can be silly with children, it's called fun.

Says nothing in the post that it’s being silly with children. She does sound idiotic and no I’m not a misery guts.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 21/03/2025 07:29

Since when is having family 'in jokes' idiotic? Especially when you have kids.

My DH says a particular phase in a daft voice every time he comes home. DS has an equally daft response. They've been doing it since DS could respond, so at least 7 years.

Urm, where do you think op's child has got it from then?

Umm, from her. Still nothing that the wife did it to have fun with her child.
This is tedious now.

Lorrainedrops · 21/03/2025 09:01

House keeping lol 🧺🧹🧽🪣

Northerlad · 21/03/2025 09:04

Wow, lighten up and get a sense of humor.

SnowFrogJelly · 21/03/2025 09:15

Chillax!!

vickylou78 · 21/03/2025 09:21

Chill out op! Honestly this is so cute and even from your wife it's fine surely if she's just having a laugh pretending to be housekeeping when going into her own hotel room. I imagine she's just enjoying the experience of staying in a hotel. As long as she isn't doing it in other scenarios surely it's fine. Are you worried people will think your wife is a maid? Surely if there was ever any confusion with other hotel guests your wife would just say ah no I'm a guest I was just being silly. Lighten up op!

As for your 4 yr old, this will just fizzle out if you don't make a big deal of it.

notforonesecond · 21/03/2025 09:30

DS once loudly asked me why my vagina had a beard in the M&S loos.

“Housekeeping” is cute.

babyOnly · 21/03/2025 11:02

Jeez. Get a grip, mate!

Hello, I can understand why you would find it embarrassing as it looks like she is belittling the cleaners, but I'm sure most of them would find it funny, it would be those who didn't that have the problem, if anything when she says it, just tell them she is just like her mother, and make a joke of it as well, if you make something of it then you would be making it more of a problem then it is.

Talk about first world problems 🙄

How odd to walk about a hotel shouting housekeeping in every room you walk into. I can’t fathom why anyone would feel the need to do this. I personally don’t find it funny.

A lot of posters are telling the OP to chill out etc. I think his wife sounds idiotic. Eventually I’d have to say “For Gods sake, will you stop doing that? It sounds ridiculous.”
The child repeating it? No problem. Sounds funny.

Ilovecleaning · 21/03/2025 14:28

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 19/03/2025 15:44

I thought you were going to say that your wife masturbated in public, OP.

You have funny ideas about what constitutes embarrassing.

So do you 🤣

Heavens, you're about the sixth person to quote the whole OP, and you barely wrote anything anyway.

SargeMimpson · 21/03/2025 14:42

I agree with PPs that this isn’t embarrassing in itself, however, I think it’s pretty embarrassing to keep repeating the same (non-funny) ‘joke’ over and over again and think it’s hilarious.

DW needs new patter.

blondiepigtails · 21/03/2025 15:48

My daughter teaches 4 year olds. Would you like a list of the things they announce when they come to school? 'Housekeeping' really wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

Embarrassing!! No, embarrassing is when your 4 year old walks into a full living room with ALL your wifes sanitary towels stuck everywhere on her body (including one between his legs). Or being on a packed bus, passing a church hall, and shouting at the top of their voice. 'Look mummy, that's where you buy all our clothes isn't it'.

In the scheme of things, if that is all you've got to worry about then think yourself lucky and just join in.

SteveBognor · 22/03/2025 11:19

I don't get it at all - you must operate a different definition of housekeeping in your house? Very weird, especially to talk about it in public!
