Wife did embarrassing thing in hotel, now DD is copying – WWYD?

Posting here because I genuinely don’t know how to handle this without causing WW3 with DW.

We were on a family weekend away a couple of weeks ago, staying in a nice(ish) hotel. DW has this (in my opinion) mortifying habit of calling out “Housekeeping!” in a sing-song voice before entering a room, including our own hotel room. No idea why, she thinks it’s hilarious.

Anyway, fast forward to this week and now DD (4) has started doing it CONSTANTLY. Every time she walks into a room at home, at PIL’s house, even at nursery drop-off! This morning she did it in M&S toilets when someone was actually in there, and I nearly died of embarrassment.

I gently mentioned to DW that maybe we should stop encouraging it, and she got all huffy, saying it’s just a bit of fun and I need to lighten up. But I can’t be the only one who thinks this is just Not A Thing normal people do??

AIBU to want this to stop before DD starts doing it at school? WWYD?

Alright, maybe “nearly died” was a bit dramatic! But standing in M&S toilets while your four-year-old cheerfully announces herself to a stranger is definitely not my idea of a good time.

My toddler son once loudly counted the poos of the person in the next cubicle as they splashed into the water ... you really need to get over yourself if you think your DD is embarrassing, she's 4 years old!!!

Blades2 · 22/03/2025 17:20

Tell DW she can do it as long as she’s cleaning 😂 that should stop it

A 4 year old cheerfully announcing herself is not what you want?
think yourself lucky you aren’t my friends husband, who’s 4 year old picked a box of tampons out of the pram basket after a quick trip to the shops before the park, and continues to feck the tampon box down the slide hitting another dad in the head. Now that would be mortifying

OctoberandApril · 22/03/2025 21:18

The child is funny.

I don't understand why people think the wife is funny.

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/03/2025 21:57

I'm going to go against the grain here. I think your wife saying that all the time is pretty annoying. What does it mean? Can someone explain the joke to me...does it mean someone needs to tidy up?!
I'm all for having a sense of humour but that's lame.

I wouldn't find it embarrassing your daughter saying it though.

Your not going against the grain, me and a few others said that a few days ago.
She would drive me nuts!

DogRocket · 23/03/2025 00:23

😆 lighten up

😂😂😂😂

Anotherparkingthread · 23/03/2025 00:27

Urghh how tacky. It would give me the ick majorly. I'm stop going places with a person who did this.

TwoShades1 · 23/03/2025 00:57

Surely it’s just a bit of a family “in joke”? I wouldn’t worry about a 4 year old saying it. I don’t pay much attention to what others peoples small children are saying unless they are talking to me.

Suleika · 23/03/2025 07:53

The more you react to this, the more she’ll do it. Since it bothers you, either pretend deep boredom and indifference when she says it, or tell her that a much better word to shout on entering a room is “wonderful/chips/heavenly” - whatever you don’t find embarrassing

eluned16 · 23/03/2025 08:07

Agree with other posters. I don't see the problem - actually think it's funny and sweet? And a 4 year old will definitely forget about it really soon anyway.

Petesdragoness · 23/03/2025 08:23

Poor wife, making a completely harmless joke and having partner reacting like this. I'm sure she fantasies about being with a partner who understands her.

MsDitsy · 23/03/2025 09:31

Is your DW shouting it as though she is housekeeping or that she is summoning housekeeping? I get its annoying if it's every single room. Is she doing it to get a laugh from other people or at this stage just to annoy you? If you can rise to my level of petty, I'd dive in before her and shout it in an even louder voice just to see her reaction, or anything else she might find embarrassing. I can't say I'd be embarrassed by my other half doing something like that but I'd sure as he'll get fed up of it after a while.

Missj25 · 23/03/2025 12:44

Also funny , not mortifying !!

hydriotaphia · 19/03/2025 15:34

I feel that this was an obvious joke from your wife, and is an obvious joke from your daughter. Nothing embarrassing about either of them doing it. I don't think anyone will hear your daughter saying it and assume that she lives in a palace and has servants following her round whom she can rudely call on to pick up after her (is this the source of the embarrassment??).

Actually, I think it's meant to be like a cleaner or maid announcing herself, rather than calling for a servant. I'm with OP, if my partner did this, it would drive me nuts. Once might be funny, but every time you stay anywhere? Hopefully DD realises it's simply annoying and stop, don't hold out much hope for the wife stopping, though.....🤣

😂😂 understands her need to shout housekeeping repeatedly? She should just pack it in now, stuff tends to stop being funny after the 2nd or 3rd time. Know when to stop

Yes, most people would think she was weird. It's not funny. I'm quite surprised how many posters find it funny. So annoying.

It is not quirky or cute.

angeltop · 24/03/2025 16:35

Oh hell, we knock on hotel room doors (where family are) and shout open up police.

ymemanresu · 24/03/2025 19:31

GiddyCrab · 19/03/2025 15:37

Oh dear. Wait until she starts making personal remarks about people in public. You better carry a big stone to crawl under OP.

My daughter was about 3 and she said in the park loudly and pointed ‘ mummy that boy has got a choccy face’ ( a black child ) 🤦‍♀️

We do this. So if they are embarrassing so are we.

I blame family guy

Very late to this thread but yes, it's a joke from Family Guy, we also do this. It's just in the hotel room, for the benefit of us, like any other stupid wee in-joke.

The OPs reaction is so odd.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 25/03/2025 14:10

pbopkg · 19/03/2025 15:30

Fair enough, maybe I am being a bit uptight about it. Just worried she’s going to do it in some really inappropriate setting (imagine at a doctor’s surgery or a school assembly!). But if the general consensus is that it’s harmless and she’ll grow out of it, I’ll try to chill out.

You must chill the f out!!

They're embarrassing you, by being themselves.
No one else is bothered by it.
Just you.

Do you like your wife otherwise?
