Wife did embarrassing thing in hotel, now DD is copying – WWYD?

Posting here because I genuinely don’t know how to handle this without causing WW3 with DW.

We were on a family weekend away a couple of weeks ago, staying in a nice(ish) hotel. DW has this (in my opinion) mortifying habit of calling out “Housekeeping!” in a sing-song voice before entering a room, including our own hotel room. No idea why, she thinks it’s hilarious.

Anyway, fast forward to this week and now DD (4) has started doing it CONSTANTLY. Every time she walks into a room at home, at PIL’s house, even at nursery drop-off! This morning she did it in M&S toilets when someone was actually in there, and I nearly died of embarrassment.

I gently mentioned to DW that maybe we should stop encouraging it, and she got all huffy, saying it’s just a bit of fun and I need to lighten up. But I can’t be the only one who thinks this is just Not A Thing normal people do??

AIBU to want this to stop before DD starts doing it at school? WWYD?

POTATOES!

Onemorehamster · 20/03/2025 12:26

😂😂 I mean I don’t find it funny as it’s not a funny joke to me … but embarrassing mortifying huh?!! I don’t understand your post

I don’t think this is anything to do with your dd and everything to do with your wife. I’m a different generation so don’t get the cultural references but based on the responses a lot of people do. Just be very careful if you’re feeling your wife is an embarrassment. My ex was like that, he’s an ex for a reason (and no, I’m far from an out and out extrovert, he just didn’t like me doing anything outside his very carefully crafted list of ‘acceptable behaviour’)

My XH too! I was to be seen and not heard at all times out in public.

Gosh, he was a tosser.

I wouldn't say it's mortifying but it is pretty boring of your wife to continue doing this. The joke is done. But you do need to have a chat with her about it.

AndrewPreview · 20/03/2025 12:57

Honestly, this is hilarious.

You absolutely do need to lighten up.

Aimtodobetter · 20/03/2025 13:00

Hugely cringe from a grown up - but from a 4 year old quite funny. Maybe try handing her a dustpan and brush or other cleaning implement and pointing towards something that needs doing for cleaning or laundry every time she does it at home in an “I’m in on the joke” way and she will very quickly stop it.

I'm with your wife. This really isn't a big deal and DD will have forgotten it within a week.

Agree.

Gymmum82 · 19/03/2025 15:28

I mean it’s a bit of a weird thing to do but not exactly mortifying especially if it’s a little kid doing it. If she was walking round shouting ‘for f*cks sake’ it might be worth a chat

This

UnctuousUnicorns · 20/03/2025 13:10

I'm one of the miserable few who can't remotely fathom why this could be perceived as any way funny coming from a grown woman (or man). Not the first time, not any time. If I did that when we visited hotels DH would quite rightly look at me like I'd lost the plot.

applestrudels · 20/03/2025 13:17

This morning she did it in M&S toilets and I nearly died of embarrassment.

Well here is a list of things my little girl has said, really loudly in public toilets and changing rooms, (including the mixed sex changing rooms at the swimming pool) which will hopefully make you feel less embarrassed:

"Mummy, you've got a really hairy front bum!"
"Mummy, you're wiping your bum!"
"Mummy, that's your booby! Milk comes out of there to feed [baby sister]!"
"Mummy, have you done a poo? Poo! It stinks! Ugh, why did you do such a stinky poo?!"
"Mummy, what's that thing for? [sanitary towel] Why has it got blood in it? Why do every month ladies get blood coming out of their front bum? What are you doing with that?? Mummy!!! Tell me!!!"
"Ugh you've got blood on your hands!! Mummy!! You've got blood on your hands!!!"

You've got off lightly so far.

Moveoverdarlin · 20/03/2025 13:17

Calm down. I thought you were going to say she shit the bed!

Your wife and child seem fun. You seem boring.

My Mum whenever we were on holiday would sing ‘Hi-Di-hi Campers or ‘good morning Campers’ when she walked in the door to the tent / caravan.

It’s just a fun thing to do, your child will probably say Housekeeping! to her children when staying in hotels in 30 years time. Don’t be so strung up, it’s called having a personality. My daughter has said far worse in supermarkets. You do realise everyone sat on the loos in M&S will have smiled at a small child doing this.

TheCheeseTax · 20/03/2025 13:18

Get over yourself. ya tit.

Mercedes45 · 20/03/2025 13:21

I laughed. I laughed really hard. I'm going to start doing this. Il let you know how I get on.

Worriedaboutwhatpeoplethink · 20/03/2025 13:23

Could be worse ! My dd (4) heard some mums on the way into school having a loud conversation with extremely ‘colourful’ language and for weeks after she kept exclaiming ‘I can’t FUCKING believe this SHIT!’ 😭

12345mummy · 20/03/2025 13:27

I love to say “room service” when I take snacks or supper to my children’s room. We all smile, it’s just a bit of fun. FWIW I’ve worked in both housekeeping and room service so I don’t find it offensive in any way. I think your wife was being fun and you’re being a spoil sport. No one would think bad of a young child saying housekeeping in a public toilet. It would make me smile.

tropicalroses · 19/03/2025 15:30

I agree OP it is really cringe.

It is cringe.

I find a lot of things funny but she obviously thinks she's hilarious when she's not.

Klozza · 20/03/2025 13:38

I can PROMISE you kids will say much more embarrassing things than this in public completely unprovoked. My best friends little girl who was 3 at the time announced very loudly in the womens toilets “mummy why is there blood in your nappy?” when my friend was wearing a sanitary pad. I obviously found this hilarious, she did not 😂

Flamingfeline · 20/03/2025 13:39

If you want a child to stop doing something, if it’s not something dangerous obviously, just ignore it. If they don’t get attention good or bad, they’ll stop doing it.

This made me laugh and is exactly what my previous comment was basicaly saying 😂😂

Joe7t8 · 20/03/2025 13:41

I’m quite surprised how many people think the OP’s wife is genuinely funny and a bit of a laugh for doing this. Surely we’ve all known people that think they’re being funny by repeating a joke to death with predictability, but generally we just find this behaviour from an adult cringeworthy, no?

We used to have a bloke in our office that was always doing an impression of one the Little Britain characters. Maybe I worked in an office full of killjoys, but we all found it annoying at the best of times and embarrassed when he’d do it in front of visitors. His line manager had to take him to one side and ask him to stop in the end.

NoWayRose · 20/03/2025 13:45

Mr and Mrs Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.

Flamingfeline · 20/03/2025 13:51

Also when my son was three (he’s now 36) we were staying at a small B and B. The tables were quite close together and the bed and breakfast owner, a very large lady, had to squeeze to get between them. My son must have asked about six times in an ever louder voice “mummy, why is that lady so FAT? MUMMY, WHY IS THAT LADY SO FAT?”. Having diverted him to his food “Mummy, why are there slugs on my plate! MUMMY, WHY ARE THERE SLUGS ON MY PLATE?” (The slugs were mushrooms).
it was excruciating.

See you this and raise you
"UGH WHATS THAT I DO NOT LIKE THAT HAIRY BIT" and 200 decibels in the loos in Claridges from DS.

Iwannakeepondancing · 20/03/2025 14:03

This really isn’t embarrassing!

MummaMummaMumma · 20/03/2025 14:16

I immediately thought of Home Alone.
Why is this embarrassing, even a little bit?
