Why are people so angry on here

I've seen a few posts where people are asking perfectly normal questions and the responses are insane.

I made a jokey post myself this afternoon and was met with one lady questioning my work ethics and my driving capabiliites, all because I said my husband sent me flowers at work after an argument.

It was completely not in context to what I'd posted and just seemed outright vicious.

Is this the norm here?

Clearly I haven't encountered the really awful.ones or I am one of them!
I never post in AIBU though.

It’s crazy isn’t it? The first few posts definitely set the tone. Sometimes, on longer threads, other posters come along and offer a different opinion and can occasionally change it, but not always.
I took a long break from MN, I’ve only come back on because I’m pregnant after a huge gap, but contemplating deleting it again because people are just awful.

It's odd that the first few replies set the tone . Almost like some don't have their own opinion just follow the crowd.

My only tip is to choose the forum categories you read/post in. It doesn’t completely solve the problem but it helps!

Some parts of MN, such as anything discussing trans issues, are well known to be pretty vile, so any sane and balanced posters have long since left those bits to the usual extremist types.

I’ve learned a lot about “trans” issues on here, none of what I’ve learned was “vile”. It’s been more about how women and girls are affected rather than “trans” itself.

Calling people discussing this “extremist types” sounds quite intolerant of you!

I posted last week when I was feeling incredibly down and probably seemed quite pathetic but the 1st 2 responses were so mean that I deleted the thread and cried at work. There was no reason to be horrible, they could have just said nothing if they thought me that awful.

Lentilweaver · 17/03/2025 20:27

Where did you post @Tanyaaah?

Tanyaaah · 17/03/2025 20:28

Just on Chat.

Lentilweaver · 17/03/2025 20:32

Well that's awful. Usually Chat is ok. I have had a lot of support from the sub forums.

Longtimeloiterer · 17/03/2025 20:36

Some people are deliberately obtuse (if not its amazing how they've reached adulthood.

Keyboard warrioring is live and kicking here 🥴

LUBAR · 17/03/2025 23:09

A lot of damaged individuals on here. You can spot them a mile off. Just don't bite.

SemperIdem · 17/03/2025 23:12

AIBU has always been the sharper end of MN. But tends to be the first one that new posters stumble across.

Other boards are generally calmer - though the baby names board can also get a bit terse!

Keyboard warriors have always existed online. Best ignored. 🤷‍♀️

LivesinLondon2000 · 19/03/2025 17:04

Totally agree and it really puts me off posting or giving my opinion.
I post on a few other sites and never see the sort of angry responses to fairly uncontroversial posts that I see here - though I admit I don’t post on Reddit which does sound worse.
Rather than just saying ‘I don’t agree with you’ etc people often come out with an angry tirade.
Though someone recently replied to one of my posts with ‘What rot!’ which made me laugh as I didn’t think anyone had said that since about the 1950s!

Menopausal I presume.
