Help! Must be a cheaper solution for BO in clothes?

Please advise, or am I being unreasonable and should just replace the clothing of my poor teenage daughter!
13yr DD has good hygiene, showers daily, hair wash every couple of days. Always showers after exercise. Uses “proper” deodorant and perfume. She still struggles with BO. It sticks to her clothes after a day of being warm at school, or out with friends. Her school shirts, branded school jumpers, personalised dance uniform, all smell, even after washing. I have tried every product in the supermarket. Am I just going to have to let her smell or do I fork out again for new? AIBU to think there must be a better solution?

My daughter struggled with sweat stained clothing. Depending on your make up, either vinegar or bicarb takes the smell out. So if the vinegar doesn't work try bicarb. Also there is a great deodorant that really helped its called AKT deodorant and is completely natural. It was invented by theatre actors who sweated badly in the lights.

Growsomeballswoman · 17/03/2025 18:25

100% use a proper soap. There are some gorgeous ones out there.

NimbleTiger · 17/03/2025 18:25

Add white distilled vinegar to your washing powder drawer and a little in the conditioner drawer works a treat.

Lencten · 17/03/2025 18:26

Bicarb or white vinegar - though first thing I try is a rewash at higher temp not quick cycle and dry outside if possible.

chillycat · 17/03/2025 18:27

Mitchum unscented roll-on.

Maybe try gym clothes sanitiser?

Are you absolutely sure she’s washing thoroughly? She may think she is, but as pps have said, she needs to use bar soap under her arms, something like Pears or Imperial Leather, Dove’s fine too.

Apply Mitchum stick deodorant straight after washing before bed, it will keep her from sweating overnight

Wash at minimum 40 degrees, but doesn’t need to be a long wash if you’re worried about cost. Air dry clothes outside in sunlight if you can.

Growsomeballswoman · 17/03/2025 18:29

nesti Dante soaps are lovely and last sooooo long. I use a shower puff under the arms and never ever smell. Teenage DS does this and no smell

Copperoliverbear · 17/03/2025 18:29

Also turn machine up to 40 and you must have a time saver on your machine to cut the programme down to an hour

starfishmummy · 17/03/2025 18:29

Had this trouble with our son. Had to wash his clothes separately to ours or the smell transferred. Minimum of 40°wash, bio powder, dettol sanitiser. Hotter wash for things that will take it.

Just a tip for those of us who are naturally a bit more whiffy - those 'exfoliating' gloves you get for £1 in most supermarkets are fantastic for washing underarms. I think the bacteria can get trapped in old skin cells and using these everytime you shower with soap or shower gel really makes a huge difference over time.

Einszwei · 17/03/2025 18:30

Get her use hibiclens occasionally to wash with. I get pretty stinky and it is the only thing that has ever worked for me.

Sourdoughandjam · 17/03/2025 18:30

Totally agree with the 40 degree wash and proper bar soap rather than shower gel. It makes all the difference.

Dueanamechange2025 · 17/03/2025 18:31

Agree with the other posts regarding soap, white vinegar, higher wash temp but also, how old is your washing machine? We had one that we didn’t think was that old. Something went on it and instead of getting it fixed we bought a new one to match the kitchen and honestly it’s so much better! Clothes are just cleaner, fresher and nicer.

Matronic6 · 17/03/2025 18:31

When DD was potty training she had lots of accidents and a days worth of clothes were chucked into washing by DH and left for days whilst I was away. I was furious with him and even more so when they came out of the wash still absolutely reeking. It was like the smell has embedded in the fabric.
I soaked them in a mixture of white vinegar and cold water for half a day then washed again and the smell was gone.

I also recommend the Mitchum antiperspirant roll on.

QuartzIlikeit · 17/03/2025 18:32

Sorry, havent read the whole thread so apologise if its already been said:

  1. wash at 40
  2. Use washing powder - NOT pods or gel
  3. Use dettol laundry in every wash, instead of fabric conditioner if you can (fill the fabric conditioner dispenser with it)
  4. line dry it if possible - dont use the tumbledrier
MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 17/03/2025 18:32

Biological washing detergent at 40’

if they smell really bad, give them a pre soak with the biological liquid scrubbed in the pits

Bory · 17/03/2025 18:34

A cap of zoflora rather than fabric softener works too

Ice25 · 17/03/2025 18:35

I add dettol laundry liquid for stinky teenagers. Smells lovely and gets rid of the BO smell!

Nonbio46 · 17/03/2025 18:36

I love a good laundry strip. Get a bucket ( or something that all the items will fit in) and fill it with nice hot water. Put a cup of biological washing powder in and mix it around to start to dissolve. Add the clothes and mix around. Then add 1/2 a cup of bicarbonate of soda ( from the cleaning aisle in the shops) and finally 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Mix everything around ( it will fizz a bit). Leave to soak until the water is cold, then squeeze out the excess water and pop the clothes on a normal wash. This soaking process has never failed me. X

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 17/03/2025 18:38

Can I please ask - when people are suggesting the dettol, which one? (See photo)

So my experience of this is, the cream bar deodorants seem to leave more a residue on clothes than a normal roll on. I ruined some things with Sure stick deodorant, roll on is fine. So yes change the deodorant.
You will need to rub the under arm area of each item of clothing with something like a vanish bar or bio liquid detergent, inside and out for good measure, and then give them a decent long soak, probably overnight (I used to use bio Tex but that doesn't seem to be available any more try napisan ) then wash on a 40, use the normal amount of detergent for the size of the wash, don't be tempted to use extra (I would cut out the scent boosters, they might be contributing to the residue build up under the arms). Hang out side if possible.
I think if the clothes are still stinky after this then you might need to get rid of them. Hopefully the deodorant and soap changes will mean that you don't get the build up on things moving forward.

SaltedPotato · 17/03/2025 18:41

Stinky smelly lingering smells in clothes get the following treatment in our house.

Soak in boiling water 50:50 vinegar and water. With bicarb of soda. Then get thrown in the wash with more bicarb and some laundry bacteria remover (Dettol or own brand equivalent).
They then get a normal wash and dried outside. Then repeat if necessary..but it's never necessary

Andanotherone01 · 17/03/2025 18:42

Dettol bar soap is brilliant. You can buy in bulk from Amazon

Marchhare80 · 17/03/2025 18:44

My son had this permanently. We were constantly checking he was washing properly etc. He then switched deodorant from lynx to mitchum and the problem disappeared overnight. I would try mitchum deodorant before taking more drastic steps.

Ice25 · 17/03/2025 18:44

It’s the dettol laundry sanitiser I use
