Help! Must be a cheaper solution for BO in clothes?

Please advise, or am I being unreasonable and should just replace the clothing of my poor teenage daughter!
13yr DD has good hygiene, showers daily, hair wash every couple of days. Always showers after exercise. Uses “proper” deodorant and perfume. She still struggles with BO. It sticks to her clothes after a day of being warm at school, or out with friends. Her school shirts, branded school jumpers, personalised dance uniform, all smell, even after washing. I have tried every product in the supermarket. Am I just going to have to let her smell or do I fork out again for new? AIBU to think there must be a better solution?

Thank you so much everyone. So many useful tips. I have ordered some of the gymwash to give it a try. Washing machine will be set to 40 from now on. Eco wash will get a turn when I have time for a longer wash (think it takes 2.5hrs though!) Will get myself some vinegar/vodka to try and have passed on the hygiene suggestions! hibiscrub/bar soap, flannel, dry and deodorant before bed from now on.
I really appreciate all the help 😊

I’d take her to the drs incase it’s due to something medical.
also my son is a person trainer and I use the new persil power wash on his clothes.
maybe after you have been to the drs and got treatment, get her some new tops and use the new persil power wash

Great advice already! Just going to go and change the wash that’s on to 40
degrees!

I’m amazed that you washed at 30 all this time and wondered why it was still smelly, and the only alternative you had tried was 60! It makes me think that they really should teach every child about washing machines and other household stuff at high school!

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 17/03/2025 17:56

You could try upping the spin too.

WellyBellyBoo · 17/03/2025 17:58

Another vote for Napisan in the powder drawer. Works wonders on stinky kit.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 17/03/2025 17:59

As regards soap, as has been suggested, an anti bacterial bar soap is best. And yes, white vinegar in the wash has saved me when I've bought stuff from Vinted and it has smelt when it arrived. And yes, try to avoid aerosol deodorant. Roll on or cream works best for me. I use Mitchum roll on.

I always wash at 30° and our clothes never smell after being washed.
I'd imagineops daughter being 13 is the issue.. both my children went through the stinking no matter what I did stage 😆

InMyMNEra · 17/03/2025 18:01

I don’t have time to read the entire thread, but I recommend Mitchum. It’s the only thing that works for me

LilacPony · 17/03/2025 18:03

Vichy clinical control antiperspirant has absolutely saved me. It’s £10. But, it’s lasting ages and does work! I wash before bed and put on Mitchum stick antiperspirant. And in the morning I wash and put on Vichy.
I didn’t know about using bars of soap instead so that’s helpful!

LikeABat · 17/03/2025 18:04

Halo sports wash as an alternative to Gym wash you have ordered. You can get it in Sainsbury's. The Dr Beckman spray also gets rid of stains if they're not too embedded.

NoProbLlamaa · 17/03/2025 18:07

Also try spraying the armpit and smelly areas with a Dettol surface spray to kill the bacteria - leave for a few hours and then wash. I think it’s the bacteria that creates the smell

WalkingWavy · 17/03/2025 18:07

I can relate to your daughter.. just one of those naturally BO prone people regardless of personal hygiene. It was awful at school I used to get so embarrassed. I use perspirex deodorant and have done for years. I never smell and only use it twice a week! I also exclusively use bar soap to wash.

Hwi · 17/03/2025 18:09

Take you dd to a good endocrinologist. If you are unable to get a referral, try a private one abroad - in Greece you get an English-speaking one for £50 a consultation (just an example). Basically, when you go on holiday, you can have her checked out.

Delphigirl · 17/03/2025 18:11

Spray armpit area of clothes with (cheap) vodka. That’s what costume / wardrobe people use. V effective.

30 degrees, but I did try a hot wash (60) and it just shrunk her last school jumper and it still had the lingering smell

Bicarb and/or white vinegar

Either sprinkle or put in washing machine drawer

Worked a treat on my DC gymwear

crockofshite · 17/03/2025 18:13

are the clothes natural fabrics? or have a high nylon / man made content?

AltitudeCheck · 17/03/2025 18:15

Also consider drying her clothes outside in the fresh air and sunshine (assuming we ever get some), line dried clothes always smell fresher than those dried inside.

SootysCaravan · 17/03/2025 18:16

Dettol laundry sanitiser is brilliant. Think it is anti bacterial and shifts anything stubborn

ginnybag · 17/03/2025 18:17

Vodka spray.

Literally cheap vodka in a spray bottle. Spray, let it dry, wash at 40 with a bio agent.

Theatres use vodka to take smells from non-washable costumes - the alcohol kills the bacteria. So does the hotter wash

Bar soap or clorhexidine wipes for your daughter.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 17/03/2025 18:17

I had this issue a couple of years ago, felt like my tops never smelled clean after washing.

I read a few threads on here about it and changed to:

using bar soap instead of just shower gel
Switched to anti perspirant
Adding dettol antibacterial liquid into a 40 degree wash

Those changes basically solved it, even in summer.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 17/03/2025 18:18

Dettol again here.
I use it in a prewash.
Shirts at 60. The rest of uniform at 40.

Turboislander · 17/03/2025 18:19

Acnicide gel works brilliantly as a deodorant. It's meant to be a facial wash for treating acne but it is antibacterial and also works to prevent body odour. It's quite expensive to use this way though. Rubbing washing up liquid into armpit areas of clothes and leaving to soak in for a bit before washing has always worked to get any lingering smells out for me.

Egg7 · 17/03/2025 18:22

Persil wonder wash (the blue one ) is really good. I put a bit neat in the armpits after running and then wash at 40 degrees. Gets it all out.

Serpentstooth · 17/03/2025 18:22

Wear natural fibres whenever possible. Polyester and other synthetics make everyone sweat and smell like pigs.

Gemstonebeach · 17/03/2025 18:22

I am quite a smelly person and I find handwashing is better for getting the smell out if my clothes get smelly, I use rexona clinical deodorant which tends to hold the smell at bay. I put dr Beckmanns odour remover in the water as well as some of the detergent and then i really work the handwash detergent into the armpits before the I do the general wash. Spraying vodka on armpits of tops which don’t stink also works so they can be hung up and won’t again.
