To think leaving UK is the best Option now

LeavinUK · 17/03/2025 10:51

We are thinking of leaving UK now to move to Dubai or USA. We have two young children who are in nursery, not in School yet and one will start school next year.
The reasons are the state of UK. Looking at the state of NHS, the waits are so long if you ever have to go to A&E, you can access better healthcare of you have insurance in any other country. Another reason is the ever increasing tax, we both work full time and I have the potential to earn six figures but I am staying at a flexible job to earn under 6 figures and I am forced to not get a promotion or switching to High paying jobs by the fact that I won't be eligible for 30 funded hours of Childcare which I I think is very unfair on hard working people who want to progress in career while having young children. UK doesn't feels like a family friendly country overall.
We also don't feel safe now going out to city centre etc which have become a ghost town and so much of illegal immigrants loitering around and so much increase in crimes.
Our friends who moved to Dubai are able to afford full time house help, nanny and a driver while earning similar to ourselves. While, here we are struggling with young kids and paying huge taxes. I have family in USA who are earning big bucks and paying much less taxes and being able to save and invest better for retirement while we will be working till 68 potentially 70 which is totally insane.
AIBU to feel leaving UK is the best option now and have you made a move or considering moving?

I’m assuming (hoping) you’re sarcastic there.

But yes the old ‘Im not an immigrant, I’m an expat’ vibe…

Fwiw I think expat ps are worse. They arrive and refuse to blend in the country Theyre living in. They think they know best. Stay in little groups of people of the same origin/country than them.
Think Brits in Spain who replicate the whole let’s play quoits or cricket with team etc…

Immigrants normally want to integrate themselves

That's a huge generalisation. Not true of some of the British people I know who have emigrated and not true of many of the immigrants in my local area - particularly women. Irish and Scottish people have been emigrating for years and for the most part integrate well into local communities.

Annajones101 · 17/03/2025 12:30

You are not wrong. This country’s descent into a third world hellhole is almost complete. Get out while you can.

Those who go on about US healthcare and Dubai being oppressive and all that would probably never be allowed there anyway, since they have nothing to offer those countries. So the best they can do is make excuses for this country’s decline.

ScarlettOYara · 17/03/2025 12:31

third world hellhole
😂😂
Such hyperbole!

SoOxon · 17/03/2025 12:33

OP - are you at work this morning/lunchtime/early afternoon or at home on the sofa surrounded by brochures? Why anyone would want to leave our green and pleasant land for desert to secure child care makes no sense

godmum56 · 17/03/2025 12:33

"Davros · Today 10:59
Have you actually experienced problems with the NHS? I have very varied and extensive experience of the NHS and overall I find it brilliant. I live very near a big London teaching hospital, lucky me, but I have relatives and friends in other areas who also have varied and good experiences. I think a lot of the reports about the NHS are media nonsense. I understand that there are problems, nothing is perfect, but that’s all we ever hear about. As a PP said, why not get private healthcare here? Then you’ve got a proper comparison."

yup definitely had problems with the NHS on multiple occasions including emergency care AND I worked there and saw it from the inside and it was a shit show.

It always amazes me reading people on MN bad mouthing the US and Arab countries. This country is in terminal decline and the laughing stock of the world.

But yeah, go ahead and laugh at the Americans who can at least afford to heat their homes and Arabs with their air conditioned lifestyle, while everyone here complains all winter about being afford to turn their heating on.

It’s like people on here are in some kind on denial about the absolute shitshow of a country their live in.

Do you still live here?

ScarlettOYara · 17/03/2025 12:38

No, I think that most people look beyond the tabloid press and inform themselves. They are all too aware of human rights abuses, and rightly concerned about recent events in the USA.
No country is perfect, but it's certainly not wise to immediately assume that any one nation has all the answers.
There's a Saturday morning BBC programme with reports from all their correspondents. It's very interesting and informative.

Its estimated that the us has a far higher level of heating poverty. It's about 7% here and 33% there.
The usa isn't one homogeneous lump, theres many people that need to pay for big old heating bills or air con bills

DisneyTokyoNewbie · 17/03/2025 12:20

This is interesting. How have you been welcomed?

With open arms by pretty much everyone. We've made quite a few French friends.

Heronwatcher · 17/03/2025 12:44

You are UTTERLY MAD. This must be a joke?

I would not move to the USA for all the money in the world. School shootings, a president that’s stirring up hatred making his country a target for half the world. Plus if you think the NHS is bad, the USA literally has no healthcare free at the point of use? How is that better?

Dubai is also far from a safe haven especially if you’re planning on bringing up young kids there.

thepariscrimefiles · 17/03/2025 12:48

Lol, the main things you are complaining about would be much worse in the USA. The US healthcare system ranks one of the lowest amongst developed countries. As for being safer, good luck with school shootings and gun violence inn general. The US government is now rounding up, imprisoning and deporting legal immigrants with green cards.

However, with your little rant about illegal immigrants ruining our country, you'll probably fit right in if you emigrate to the US.

I love this. My husband lived in France for about five years and has a dream to go back there one day. He has an Irish passport so I think that helps with some of the read tape. He is fluent but I'm probably more high-school , "Pour allez a la banquet, s'il vous plait" level. My worry is (as this thread kind of supports) that expats aren't really welcome. We'd definitely not be looking for an ex-pat community. Just somewhere peaceful. I'm so happy that it's all working out for you.

Every country has there own challenges but the government should try to actively tackle issues like healthcare, crime, education etc with the ever increasing taxes. Moreover, about Dubai, they are very strict with crimes and about house keepers and nanny, they are paid employees and not slaves, it's absolutely ridiculous thing to suggest, there's a min wage there and there are rules around employment.

It stands to logic that hiring full-time domestic staff is a privilege reserved for the very wealthy. If a middle-class expat can easily afford housekeepers, a nanny etc (when in their home country they could not) it suggests that wages for those workers are disproportionately low. That doesn’t mean individual employers are at fault, but it does point to a system where the affordability of domestic help comes at the expense of the workers themselves.

arethereanyleftatall · 17/03/2025 12:58

There must be so much regional variation. I live in a beautiful part of England and I love it. No problems with the NHS. In fact I got an appointment for this afternoon, this morning.

it possibly boils down to mind set. If you can’t be happy on an income of nearly £100k, you’re not going to be happy anywhere. It’s just you.

What are you basing the "laughing stock" assessment on?

Also, "Arabs with their air conditioned lifestyle" - would you say this summarises all the key points about Dubai/UAE? It almost makes it sound like you think there's no downside/like they're an example to us all.

Of course expats / immigrants are welcomed. The thing is do you want to contribute to the community whichever it takes, do you want to improve your french and integrate?
i m the opposite as i m french living in ireland, i m a net cintributor and my family is very integrated. I ve been very welcomed but I had to put in the hard work first.

i m not sure @LeavinUK has actually realised what it takes to relocate successfully

I love our NHS and the staff work really really hard to provide the best care they can in the means they have. But, the A&E waiting times were so long when we visited last year with young DC.
UK is a great country but the public services are getting worse every year and the taxes are only going up so I feel we are not getting much value for the high taxes we are paying.

Well you aren't paying particularly high taxes as you work less to keep you salary low enough to be eligible for subsidised child care. I assume that you are a 40% tax payer and that will only be on your income over £50,000. You want to earn more money, pay less tax and still be eligible for free childcare hours and have a better functioning NHS. Surely you realise that a better NHS and free childcare are paid for through taxation which you begrudge paying?

In the US you would get hardly any paid holidays, no paid maternity leave, no subsidised child care, no state funded health care, loads of gun crime and city centres that are even more dangerous than the ones in the UK.

Ask yourself WHY you’ll be able to afford staff on a similar salary in Dubai OP.

thepariscrimefiles · 17/03/2025 13:27

LeavinUK · 17/03/2025 11:56

Don't you think it's racist to talk like that about white people? Why do you think you can say anything racist about white people and that's okay?

How is it racist to highlight the difference in treatment between immigrants from majority white countries like the UK and those from countries like Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq (where the UK has played a part in making these countries the basket cases they are today).

I'm struggling to believe that you are employed in what I assume to be a senior role with a six figure salary.
