To think leaving UK is the best Option now

We are thinking of leaving UK now to move to Dubai or USA. We have two young children who are in nursery, not in School yet and one will start school next year.
The reasons are the state of UK. Looking at the state of NHS, the waits are so long if you ever have to go to A&E, you can access better healthcare of you have insurance in any other country. Another reason is the ever increasing tax, we both work full time and I have the potential to earn six figures but I am staying at a flexible job to earn under 6 figures and I am forced to not get a promotion or switching to High paying jobs by the fact that I won't be eligible for 30 funded hours of Childcare which I I think is very unfair on hard working people who want to progress in career while having young children. UK doesn't feels like a family friendly country overall.
We also don't feel safe now going out to city centre etc which have become a ghost town and so much of illegal immigrants loitering around and so much increase in crimes.
Our friends who moved to Dubai are able to afford full time house help, nanny and a driver while earning similar to ourselves. While, here we are struggling with young kids and paying huge taxes. I have family in USA who are earning big bucks and paying much less taxes and being able to save and invest better for retirement while we will be working till 68 potentially 70 which is totally insane.
AIBU to feel leaving UK is the best option now and have you made a move or considering moving?

There are probably some jobs spreading anti immigrant sentiment on social media🙃

A fair few seem to be doing this for free..,

I love our NHS and the staff work really really hard to provide the best care they can in the means they have. But, the A&E waiting times were so long when we visited last year with young DC.
UK is a great country but the public services are getting worse every year and the taxes are only going up so I feel we are not getting much value for the high taxes we are paying.

Do you think that there are no waiting times in the US? Waiting times for Primary Care in the US grossly exceed those in the UK (or any other European country).

Don't be ridiculous!

Well it’s seems that our governments (and other EU countries too!) are starting to issues warnings….

Theres been quite a few people with visas etc… from U.K. and EU who have found themselves in a sticky place recently. Including many academics going to conferences.

So no, it’s not looking good just now. Not somewhere I’d plan any hols soon, let alone living there.

We will be only making the move after we get job offers there. We work in tech industry where salaries are high especially in Dubai and California.
Feel free to mock as much as you like but most city centres are becoming ghost towns now and really rough dodgy looking men loitering around and I have never felt safe going alone with young DC even on day times. There have been reports of such men following women and attempts of rape etc.

I doubt very much you’d get a job in the US. America has its own tech professionals and it’s nigh on impossible to get a job there unless you’re sent over by your company. Trump will be making getting visas even more difficult now.

Decent jobs in the US have private healthcare provided, so that aspect is covered. "Dangerous" areas/schools etc are mostly in specific areas typically "down town" and some very strange often more rural areas - there are plenty of "nicer/safer" places to live, work and go to school if you can live in the "nicer" parts of town or the "nicer" more rural/coastal areas.

My son works in a big UK financial services firm and says there's a "leaving do" almost weekly for someone leaving to work Dubai, USA, Canada or Australia. He can't remember anyone leaving to move to a competitor UK based firm!

There's certainly a very worrying brain drain leaving the UK at the moment.

I’d hardly call financial services a brain drain or high on many skilled migrants list. Most countries are making it harder for migrants too.

Sandy Hook was a very nice safe area.

Don't know about the states, but I would advise against Dubai. I had to be there for work, the best conditions I have ever experienced financially and accommodation-wise. But the weather!!!!!! The weather is disgusting, there is no other way about it. Talk to expats who came back about the weather - if that is OK by you, then it is a different story.

How can weather be disgusting? It's either a climate that suits you or doesn't suit you. Like any country.

BooomShakeTheRoom · 22/03/2025 19:14

Dubai and US certainly wouldn’t be my choice but YANBU if moving there is positive for your family.

Close to 50c heat is hazardous to human health and therefore suits nobody. Imo, it’s fair enough to perceive dangerous weather to be disgusting.

No, not really. A climate that hot and dry is simply not suited to intensive population — it worked ok for what used to be there, a few coastal settlements of fisher people and pearl fishers and inland mostly nomads moving between available water. Having cities like Dubai is an environmental disaster on the grounds of water alone. The UAE consistently comes top in rankings of least environmentally friendly countries because of its reliance on air con and desalinated water, which in turn are hugely energy-costly. The buildings are uninhabitable without aircon for the hotter months, and the cities are built for car dependency. That’s leaving aside the fact that as a tourist destination, it requires mass medium-haul air travel, and the importation of virtually all food, and the environmental damage caused by the construction of artificial islands.

I don’t think it’s particularly inaccurate to call it a ‘disgusting’ climate in terms of a total mismatch between local conditions and current human habitation.
