Threw an egg at a car in an insomnia fuelled rage. AIBU?

I live in a block of flats with a turning square for cars outside. It’s painted with double yellow lines.

Unfortunately, this space attracts antisocial behaviour, especially during warmer months. We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours.

In the past I’ve just turned over and tried to get back to sleep (often being woken up a few more times that night). This was a real blight on our lives last summer, but we’ve had a bit of respite over the winter. Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbour), I don’t think this is likely to be effective. It’s not always the same cars/people. I’ve thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous). After thinking about it I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it.

Last night I was jolted awake at 3:30 am by loud music booming from a car. I looked out the window and saw it had pulled up just outside.

I had a tough week last week, getting some bad health news, and I have been suffering from a bit of insomnia. My job is always quite full-on, and I was already filled with a fair bit of post-weekend dread about the amount of work I’ve got to get through this week. I thought I’d been coping pretty well, but I do feel a bit stretched thin.

When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg, and lobbed it from the window.

The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.

AIBU to become the egg vigilante?

Yabu. My children are both severely allergic to egg and that is not unusual. Contact with egg could kill them.

Not that they would behave like that (I hope!). But you must not view egg or any other food as benign and harmless. It could kill.

Might get rid of a few yobs this way. Here's hoping.

OP you did splendidly and I hope it makes the scrotes steer clear.

HollyBerryz · 17/03/2025 20:03

This did make me lol. Maybe flip a few spoons of Nutella choc spread down next time

Thank you to everyone for your comments. Yes, I certainly have been a bit of a yob, which surprised me — I didn’t know I had it in me. The main concern for me is that if I’d hit the paintwork, the shell could have scratched it, which could be expensive to fix.

Although it would be very satisfying to continue balancing the scales of justice with more eggs in future, perhaps this is not a wise course of action.

I do like the idea of a super soaker though — a quick squirt to a parked car could give someone a shock, and perhaps make them realise how enraging they are being. Without risking criminal damage.

I doubt the egg shell would scratch the paint work but my mum had a raw egg thrown at her car one Halloween and it corroded the paint as she didn’t wash it off straight away.
(but I think ynbu)

I have an out of date leftover egg in my cupboard. I think I’ll lob it at the man who parks on the street outside my house like he owns the blooming road.

Scatter bird seed on/around the car. Entirely legal. He'll move.

I’m sorry your children have such a severe allergy but this comment in this context is ridiculous.

Not really my children have severe allergies if they were to fall in it then they'd potentially become very ill very quickly!

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 17/03/2025 09:02

It was very reckless. I would be concerned about retaliation.

Throwing eggs at cars with strangers is quite stupid.

Get a white noise machine, get some ear plugs and try to ignore.

I understand how frustrating it is to have noise like that, but unless it is the same cars repeatedly (so you can take their license and report) there's nothing you can do.

You are very lucky they drive away instead of either damaging your property or trying to get to you.

People doing that at 3am could be drunk, on drugs, gang members or simply volatile people.

This!

What are the chances that your children would fall in spilt egg in a random car park?

JohnTheRevelator · 17/03/2025 21:17

YABU. It should have hit the car. 😂

I read that as peasant and thought you were a tad harsh!

Definitely a pheasant. I must add that no pheasants (or peasants) were harmed in the telling of that story.

Klozza · 18/03/2025 10:51

I love this! 10/10 please do again if they come back 😂

Thisseatisnotavailable · 18/03/2025 10:55

I used to live somewhere that had a similar area where people could gather, and they would play really loud music from their car, or rev their engines.

It got really bad during lockdown but the police didn't do anything. One night a fight broke out so I called the police, and when asked if they had any weapons I did find myself saying that I thought I saw a knife. The police response then was suddenly super quick, and there was a lot of them.

We had a few nights peace after that. I'm so glad that I don't live their anymore.

JorgyPorgy · 18/03/2025 12:20

Although I think OP was 100% right , appArently throwing eggs or even water at someone is classed as assault. In a world where dashcam , doorbell cam & cctv are everywhere , need to be careful. It’s outrageous police won’t respond to anti social behaviour complaints but I bet they happily caution someone for throwing egg. People driven to vigilantism because police won’t act .

JohnofWessex · 18/03/2025 16:52

I suggest that under the circumstances the target might be advised not to press charges unless they wanted action taken against them.

Mumof3confused · 18/03/2025 17:42

I’d have wanted to do the same but probably not done it for fear of retaliation. Stay safe - and sane!

Bugaloo77 · 18/03/2025 17:52

I shouldn’t have laughed but I did because I could see me doing that in a temper. It’s his own fault if he is allergic to eggs he should be an inconsiderate knob, but I would go out and clear the egg away. I highly doubt he will retaliate unless you had your flat lit up like a Christmas tree, he wouldn’t know it came from you.

Ferrfoxache · 18/03/2025 17:55

I'd have felt the same way as you however confronting them could turn nasty. Best thing to do is say nothing but try document it on your phone where possible and contact your local council and or Police with any evidence of their anti social behaviour. Always put YOUR safety first.

Owl55 · 18/03/2025 17:56

Try a pack of beer next time!

MediatorMom · 18/03/2025 17:59

Are you private or city council and would you/they be willing to offer a neighbourhood conflict communication or community mediation sessions? Sometimes a conversation can go a long way.

Kirstk · 18/03/2025 18:01

Stock some eggs in your freezer for next time.

dcthatsme · 18/03/2025 18:04

I feel for you op. If there’s not much you can do my advice would be to buy yourself a job lot of silicone ear plugs. They do work. I’ve lived with a man who snores unbelievably loudly - I would have committed far worse than lob an egg at him if it wasn’t for these life savers

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 18/03/2025 18:06

Meh. Worse things have happened

mrsbojangles2 · 18/03/2025 18:11

OP, definitely contact your local councillor and also the police, asking for the local lead on anti social behaviour. I had a similar problem and they 'designed out' the problem by installing a kids play area. I was pleasantly surprised how seriously it was taken. Encourage other neighbours to back you up. Good luck. Ps, I would have thrown something much heavier and damaging than an egg so don't beat yourself up. No pun intended!

Doverboy · 18/03/2025 18:13

An egg hitting a car will damage the paint and you started your rant about "anti social behavior", but I guess throwing an egg is social behavior. Call your local police and let them handle it before one of the "anti-socials" teaches YOU a lesson

FFS! Are you for real??? Or are you purposely being provocative?

Porkydorky · 17/03/2025 09:02

I’m sorry OP but this made me laugh! I don’t think you are being unreasonable at all as sleep deprivation is the worst and they were being very antisocial at a ridiculous time of the night. But it might be worth going down the official route of contacting the council as well as stocking up on more eggs?

Improve your aim and good luck
