Threw an egg at a car in an insomnia fuelled rage. AIBU?

I live in a block of flats with a turning square for cars outside. It’s painted with double yellow lines.

Unfortunately, this space attracts antisocial behaviour, especially during warmer months. We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours.

In the past I’ve just turned over and tried to get back to sleep (often being woken up a few more times that night). This was a real blight on our lives last summer, but we’ve had a bit of respite over the winter. Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbour), I don’t think this is likely to be effective. It’s not always the same cars/people. I’ve thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous). After thinking about it I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it.

Last night I was jolted awake at 3:30 am by loud music booming from a car. I looked out the window and saw it had pulled up just outside.

I had a tough week last week, getting some bad health news, and I have been suffering from a bit of insomnia. My job is always quite full-on, and I was already filled with a fair bit of post-weekend dread about the amount of work I’ve got to get through this week. I thought I’d been coping pretty well, but I do feel a bit stretched thin.

When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg, and lobbed it from the window.

The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.

AIBU to become the egg vigilante?

Good for you

RachTheAlpaca · 17/03/2025 13:08

Eggsellent!
If you threw something at the cars every time then the problem would disappear :)

Good for you!

But this lad wasn’t a thug sitting in his car playing loud music in a residential area.I
You are being ridiculous conflating the two..

Would it be assault? Or… battery?

(it was, in fact, a free range Burford Brown)

I’d be buying some cheaper eggs and perfecting my aim. You’re not a yob. They are. The reason they continue to do it is because there is no consequence. As long as they can’t tell where the egg is coming from, have at it. I may steal this idea as we had similar last year!

BellissimoGecko · 17/03/2025 13:13

Contact the police each and every time this happens. Rude, thoughtless twats in cars. They need to be made to think about what they’re doing.

Ask local councillors for suggestions too for how to reduce this antisocial behaviour.

Ono200 · 17/03/2025 13:14

I get what you’re saying and I’m not trying to be unduly/ disproportionately alarmist, I understand this is not the main point of the thread. Trust me I also understand all the other risks eg the bag spills you allude to! I spend every day asssessing risks like these. But in a country where ‘egging’ is a thing I don’t think it does any harm to try to reduce this being ‘normalised’ (for want of a better word) - yes it’s not an every day occurrence but nonetheless the OP reached for an egg, not anything else. When I grew up egging houses was a thing on Halloween etc, and remember John Prescott? All I’m asking is that people consider not throwing eggs. As I said, and in my subsequent post, I have every sympathy with the OP. It’s difficult to read tone in these messages but we are all allowed an opinion - and mine is chiefly that people who act like the yobs OP refers to are the worst. But also that some
of the comments and jokes on this friend are nasty and unnecessary. Not sure that my relatively mild single comment mentioning egg allergy deserved you telling me I didn’t need to make it or ‘strongly’ highlight it but there we are - it’s not up to me what other people post. If it makes me po-faced, so be it.

It's not funny. Eggs can cause lethal allergic reactions. Finding throwing food funny is grim and ignorant

So is anti social driving.

Being on the receiving end of late night boy racers I feel your pain OP.

Carouselfish · 17/03/2025 13:17

RE. The death due to cheese being thrown.
Yes, that is tragic - it is also true that it would have been very hard to get through his life not coming into contact with cheese knowingly or unknowingly and really the main reason he died was the school not administering an epi pen.
If the most basic things can cause a fatal reaction, you can't ask the whole world to live as if that was a likely thing to happen.

BatchCookBabe · 17/03/2025 13:26

Yeah, I'm in the 'what a stupid reckless thing to do' camp. Not clever, not funny. Get a white noise machine FGS...

I am LOLing though, at the amount of posters on here saying 'YABU - you need to practice your aim, aim better, you need to have a better aim.' ROFL, LOL, Tee hee.' Acting like they're the first to say it, and thinking they're jolly hilarious! 😆 (Even though multiple posters have already said it.) See also: the hysterically funny 'ooh that's eggsellent OP!'

As has been said, I would be very worried about retaliation. People who hang around at 3am, acting anti-socially and like dickheads, are NOT the sort of people to say 'OMG she threw an egg at us, let's go home, and never return, and make sure we are always in by 10pm from now on.'

You may have opened a lion's cage @EggVigilante Good luck!

HectorPlasm · 17/03/2025 13:26

I did the same when I lived in a block of city centre flats, Ripe tomatoes work well too. The twat in the soft top blaring out at 4 am never knew what hit him.

edgeware · 17/03/2025 13:32

See I’m jealous, because the way our windows open I couldn’t throw an egg with good aim, and we have cars doing this outside ours.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/03/2025 13:32

If they don't come back it's worked. If you live in a block that's constructed in such a way that you could lob the egg from an area which didn't identify any one specific home/culprit then I guess it's alright.
But they could decide to come back en mass and lob eggs at you and neighbours homes? Fingers crossed they won't.

Oh, they will come back! (Though the OP will say that they didn't.) Wink

Good for you OP! Have an egg from me!

Oioisavaloy27 · 17/03/2025 13:42

I have terrible sleep problems but I would never dream of throwing an egg at a car I would go through the proper channels, I do have sympathy with you as 3.30am is beyond a joke.

Are you on the side of the yob playing music at 3am? This sounds like you're hoping he returns and gets some revenge.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 17/03/2025 13:51

YANBU! A car full of idiots parked on our street one night around 3/4am and they put a speaker on top and were blasting music loud enough to feel the vibrations on the first floor. I wanted to chuck something at them but was scared it would get caught on the cameras, police eventually broke it up but they were out there for over an hour

CremeEggThief · 17/03/2025 13:53

You're quite the rebel OP, aren't you! 🤣

Tilda86 · 17/03/2025 13:53

That was an idiotic thing to do and not at all as funny as you were hoping it would come across on the thread. You're just as bad as the car yob, if not worse.

Of course she’s not.

SmallFiresBurning · 17/03/2025 09:49

YANBU, however, tomatoes would be cheaper, eggs are a bit pricey these days! 🤗

You can’t use tomatoes someone in bed 3 streets away might have a tomato allergy 🙈😂😂😂

Emmz1510 · 17/03/2025 13:55

I don’t really blame you for doing this OP! Don’t be too hard on yourself. I mean, don’t do it again or anything. You might accidentally kill some poor yobbo with an egg allergy (?🤷‍♀️). Yeah, and I’m sure all the drinking and drug taking that is probably going on is perfectly safe….
You could report to the council. I doubt you are the only one bothered by this and they may be able to issue a dispersion order or whatever it’s called.
If that doesn’t work, foam earplugs from screwfix. Work like a charm.

Absolutely. She definitely needs to improve her aim and hit the car with the ignorant tw5t in, next time

CeffylCoch · 17/03/2025 14:07

If you’re worried about the egg damaging the car start saving your old tea bags up and throw them instead 🤣

waitingquietly · 17/03/2025 14:08

Not at all surprised that you reacted as you did OP - hopefully that’s seen off at least one yob .

I do think those having a go at you about food allergies are being unreasonable ( and I say that as someone who’s DH carries two EpiPens where ever he goes- it’s our responsibility nobody else’s)
