To think horror films are horrible

I have never understood why people enjoy horror films.
By that I mean the genuine films of that genre not crime/action whatever which have violence in them.
I watched part of a horror film at a freind's place when I was much younger (late teens) and was completely freaked out and left my friend’s house. The film was so shockingly nasty that it took me years to block out the images.
If you enjoy horror, why do you like them? Is it a thrill akin to a rollercoaster for you?
I honestly don’t understand why people like watching torture etc.
YABU = Horror films are great fun and I can’t get enough
YANBU = Horror films are horrible and I avoid them

Well the clue is in the name.

I'm a huge horror movie fan and have been from a young age. I don't really like the gore stuff. I suppose you just become desensitised to it after a while.

dudsville · 16/03/2025 15:51

I'm the same as you op, I was a very sensitive young person and quickly learned this genre was not for me, but had nightmares for aaaages after realising this!

HappiestSleeping · 16/03/2025 15:51

Another horror fan. Can't beat being scared out your wits. Not a big fan of gratuitous violence and gore, but it seems to be the norm these days.

Same - I pretty much exclusively watch horror movies.

Give me Halloweeen or Scream over Bridget Jones any day 😂👻

Sadly it's hard to find a scary film these days isn't it? Most of it has been done before and it all seems old hat.

Maitri108 · 16/03/2025 15:52

I absolutely love horror. It's rare to find a decent horror but I watch all sorts. Horror is comfort watching for me; I love Silence of the Lambs and Jaws for example.

I don't particularly like gore, Saw and Hostel didn't do much for me.

Haha me too. It's my go to for a cozy afternoon on the sofa!

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 16/03/2025 15:54

I don't mind ghosts or jump scares and that sort of thing, as long as there's a good plot.

But gore feats that are just a thinly cobbled together storyline as an excuse to depict the most disturbing scenarios ever... nope.

oakleaffy · 16/03/2025 15:54

A genuinely scary film without gore is very rare.
I hate gore.

However American Werewolf in London I loved- very scary .

saveforthat · 16/03/2025 15:54

I like scary/spooky/suspenseful horrors but not the blood and gore type.

LauderSyme · 16/03/2025 15:55

I can't handle them either OP. Nightmare on Elm Street traumatised me at age 14 for years afterwards and that was the last time I ever watched one.

My understanding is that other people enjoy the experience of fear flooding their body with adrenaline whilst actually remaining in a safe environement. Takes all sorts!

Sugarfish · 16/03/2025 15:55

I love a good ghost story. I’m not really a fan of the gore or torture ones. I wouldn’t pick one to watch by myself but they’re kind of fun to watch with a group and you all shout and squeal at the gross parts together.

Same. Psychological horror all the way!

Ph3 · 16/03/2025 15:56

It depends of what you mean by horror. I hate gore - blood and things like that so movies like. Saw for me are a no go. But love jump scare. So fun 😂

Charliechoosecarefully · 16/03/2025 15:57

I don’t enjoy torture porn but I love horror films.

Fagli · 16/03/2025 15:58

I love them. I hate sentimental emotional films - why would you want to make yourself cry?!!

SallyWD · 16/03/2025 15:58

I like horror because I like the thrill of being mildly scared, however I don't actually find them terrifying. To me they are so obviously fake that I can't take them seriously. I just imagine the cameraman, the special effects etc. None of it seems remotely real.
What I find far more terrifying is real life atrocities. Seeing reports of what human beings do to each other. That's the stuff of nightmares.
My DH is the opposite. He can be genuinely terrified by seeing a zombie or monster in a film but has no reaction to a documentary about real life horrors.

Same.

Love watching a horror film if I'm in the house on my own, in the dark.

Sadly, I haven't been properly scared by a film in a very long time but I keep trying...

Very much so. The main issue is special effects. Pre-special effects films were excellent, more about what you didn't see that your mind filled in.

Then, in the early days of FX, there was 30 minutes of story to 5 minutes of FX. Now it's 60 minutes of FX and 5 minutes of story.

I recall one with Oliver Reed (I think) that I saw when quite young. Black and white. It was along the lines of the thing under the stairs and was brilliant. I wish I knew what it was called.

HorrorFan81 · 16/03/2025 16:00

Well as you can tell by my username I absolutely love horror, have from an early age. Part of it is nostalgia, spent my teenage years watching all the classics and horror movies are a real comfort to me. I tend to have ones I've previously seen in the background all the time whilst I'm working/getting myself ready etc and regularly sit and watch horror, either alone or with friends. Part of why I love them is the diversity- from psychological thrillers, to slashers to paranormal to monster movies etc. They also mesh well with other genres- love a good horror comedy and the meta-horrors. They can also be very reflective of the society at the time and what scares people I.e. all the movies about right now about AI going rogue

Invisablepanic · 16/03/2025 16:01

I love a good horror, I like Halloween/Scream/final destination type films but hate torture/gore.

Some people love to be scared without actually being in danger, some people hate it. My husband loves Westerns but I can't stand them, I do get why he likes them though.

Vates · 16/03/2025 16:01

I adore horror films and don't mind gory horror films either (although not my absolute favourites). I always watch them alone as nobody I know is a fan of them!

skippy67 · 16/03/2025 16:09

I love a good horror film! But as others have said, psychological horror, rather cheap blood and guts everywhere. I don't find that type of stuff at all scary. I really enjoyed Speak no Evil recently. Any recommendations for good, clever, scary horror out there?

GoldMoon · 16/03/2025 16:11

I can do horror if it's unbelievable such as vampires , monsters , zombies etc . But show me horror where people are in jeopardy / tortured type of thing and that's a big no no .
