To think horror films are horrible

I have never understood why people enjoy horror films.
By that I mean the genuine films of that genre not crime/action whatever which have violence in them.
I watched part of a horror film at a freind's place when I was much younger (late teens) and was completely freaked out and left my friend’s house. The film was so shockingly nasty that it took me years to block out the images.
If you enjoy horror, why do you like them? Is it a thrill akin to a rollercoaster for you?
I honestly don’t understand why people like watching torture etc.
YABU = Horror films are great fun and I can’t get enough
YANBU = Horror films are horrible and I avoid them

A genuinely scary film without gore is very rare.
I hate gore.

However American Werewolf in London I loved- very scary .

The Tube scene always gets me, lone man in a deserted Tottenham Court road staion the scream of a beast coming from the pitch black tunnel, then the man is running for his life to get away from the beast, that's the best bit of the film!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 16/03/2025 16:20

I don't dislike them but they aggravate me because nobody in them seems to have much common sense. I remember watching Scream 4 (I think) and Hayden Panettiere's character gets a call from Ghostface to say that he's in her wardrobe...so she walks to the bloody thing to check 🙄.

I love a good horror film! But as others have said, psychological horror, rather cheap blood and guts everywhere. I don't find that type of stuff at all scary. I really enjoyed Speak no Evil recently. Any recommendations for good, clever, scary horror out there?

Edited

That was a great movie! Calibre is excellent if you've not seen it. The Dark And The Wicked was fab too.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 16/03/2025 16:25

I will admit that after I saw Jaws I was too frightened to have a bath for weeks!
In my defence I was a just child at the time and looking back really shouldn’t have been exposed to such a film.
Does liking horror go hand in hand with being a risk taker in life? Or is it just the opposite and you feel safe watching awful things happen from the comfort of your sofa?
Those who like the gory stuff, do you cope well with real life injuries?

Horror films don't scare me 1 bit, I find them hilarious.

Very much so. The main issue is special effects. Pre-special effects films were excellent, more about what you didn't see that your mind filled in.

Then, in the early days of FX, there was 30 minutes of story to 5 minutes of FX. Now it's 60 minutes of FX and 5 minutes of story.

I recall one with Oliver Reed (I think) that I saw when quite young. Black and white. It was along the lines of the thing under the stairs and was brilliant. I wish I knew what it was called.

Definitely. What you don't see is the most scary. I don't know what movie that is but there was a black and white one with Robert Mitchum that absolutely terrified me. The old ones are the best.

recipientofraspberries · 16/03/2025 16:27

I love horror and anything dark, spooky, disturbing. To me it's partly about the fun of the safe thrill, like a rollercoaster (which I also love), but also about exploring and looking at the dark side of human psyche. I couldn't go along through life only looking at happy things - I'd feel unbalanced!

Ladamesansmerci · 16/03/2025 16:29

I love horror. It's like riding a roller coaster. I do prefer films that build suspense well, rather that than stuff that relies on shock and gore. The Ring is a good example. I like the adrenaline rush and that way your physiological anxiety is activated, the thr logical part of your brain knows you're safe.

I love Hereditary, which actually does have a few scenes of gore, but they're well used, which is rare, and the rest of the movie is so great with how it builds up dread.

I think torture porn like Saw is horrible. And personally I think graphic depictions of sexual assault are horrible and unnecessary to show even if it is fiction. There is a grim one in Hills Have Eyes that genuinely made me feel a bit ill.

YankSplaining · 16/03/2025 16:31

I’m not into the ones that are all about killers butchering people, but I love movies about ghosts and creepy little kids. (“The Sixth Sense” was a masterpiece - too bad M. Night Shyamalan’s never come close to replicating that quality since.) I know “The Exorcist” scared a lot of people, but I liked it because I thought the priest was an intriguing character. “The Silence of the Lambs” is bloodier than I usually go for, but it’s got fantastic writing and performances. I like horror movies that focus on the psychology of the characters.

HornyHornersPinger · 16/03/2025 16:32

Completely agree.
I never watch Horror films, there's enough horror irl I think!

I’m very scared of horror films and actively avoid them. The last one I watched was The Ring, I saw both the original and the American remake.
I have vivid imagination and can’t sleep or stay alone in the house for weeks after watching something like that.

Big risk taker in real life, including risky investments, participation in risky sports and lots of hold-my-beer moments.

“The Night of the Hunter”?

Horror films don't scare me 1 bit, I find them hilarious.

Same, especially supernatural / monster / alien type stuff. Not scary at all to me.

I do hate gore though, it doesn’t scare me it just disgusts me and makes me feel sick.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/03/2025 16:33

I don't like horror films (or rollercoasters). I'm not a thrill-seeking kind of person and I have no interest in being scared. It's not necessarily that I'd actually be that scared of most horror movies, it's just that the whole concept doesn't remotely appeal to me! Fwiw I find chick flicks and cosy rom coms just as unappealing. I'm more of a sci fi, action and fantasy fan!

Hotflushesandchilblains · 16/03/2025 16:33

I am not a fan of slasher films but have become more open to other types of horror films in later years as I think there are some really inventive and interesting things being done. I would not watch Hostel or Saw for example, but I loved Get Out, Get Away and The Ring.

ChopstickNovice · 16/03/2025 16:38

I like paranormal stuff that's scary, but I can't stand gore/torture porn.

GenderFluid90 · 16/03/2025 16:39

I adore the horror genre. I've watched so many. Not much spooks me or grosses me out though

Takentomybed · 16/03/2025 16:42

I love a horror film! Mostly psychological or supernatural horror. I like a jumpscare. Also that creaped out feeling.
Don't like too much gore and can't watch anyone being tortured.
I kinda find a good horror comforting in a weird way, you know you're gonna be a bit scared/ creaped out but it will be ok at the end. It's rare that I feel properly scared after a horror.
But when I was a teenager I absolutely hated them! The Omen scared me badly when I was 11!

steff13 · 16/03/2025 16:43

I love horror movies. Some people don't. We all have different tastes. 🤷‍♀️

InWithThePlums · 16/03/2025 16:43

Different strokes for different folks.

I like more psychological, borderline horror films like The Wicker Man and Don’t Look Now. Can’t be doing with too much gore. Also like The Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, that type of thing. I love a ghost story too- I think that my enjoyment of those is a way of taking back control over something which terrified me as a child.

LiveinHarmony · 16/03/2025 16:43

Out of interest op, what was the film called that disturbed you? I remember being really disturbed by 'IT' when I was a child, and have had a fear of clowns since!

I like 'some' horror films; it isn't so black and white for me. I tend to enjoy mystery paranormal activity type things, dislike anything too gory. I like survival kind of horrors too, like The Decent.

pointythings · 16/03/2025 16:47

I can do without gore and splatter, but I do love a good psychological horror and I enjoy a well done gothic. Really enjoyed Nosferatu, so beautifully filmed and paced.

offmynut · 16/03/2025 16:47

Im a wimp i dont like horrors.
Tucker and dale is as far i will go.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/03/2025 16:49

Watching one now 😆

Snowdrops23 · 16/03/2025 16:51

I hate horror too. Don’t mind really creepy dystopian stuff - love Severance on Apple TV right now- but a proper horror movie is too much for me!
