Question about loan sharks….

Ive just spoken to my ex husband in regards to the time he has with our son this weekend.

He asked if he could drop my son off early so he could work tomorrow. He then went on to say he has been borrowing money from loan sharks and he needs to get it paid asap.

Sadly, this comes as no surprise. He was terrible with money and clearly still is. I managed to keep him on the straight and narrow for a while but he drained the absolute life out of me. We are now divorced (with a clean break order thank god) and I live a life of peace ✌🏻

Going back to my post - loan sharks. When I think of loan sharks, I imagine dodgy people turning up on your door step and beating the crap out of you if you didn’t have the money to pay the amount plus huge interest rates back. Which led me to slightly panic for the safety of my son while he’s in his dad’s care.

Am I right in thinking this is what a loan shark is? Or can they be from a company rather than an individual? I don’t want to ask him about any of it unless I really have too.

Am I right to be concerned for my son? He’s coming back in a few hours but I just feel slightly uncomfortable sending him if he’s dad’s involved with dodgy dealings.

Payday lenders with their smooth ads are today's version.

Presumably in poor areas the doorstep variety is live and thriving as people struggle. I guess it depends which ones your husband's got involved with.

The doorstep variety is most definitely thriving. If it’s these he’s borrowing from them, there’s no way on earth any child I was responsible for would be spending any time over there. If they don’t get their money on time, it’s not CCJs they threaten you with.

I think I need to ask him directly. I’m kicking myself for not doing it earlier but my son was with him and it’s best to have a private conversation. I’d like to think he knows better to avoid the doorstep variety - he has a baby with the latest gf.
