To think we should revoice sexist songs?

I will start with "Ain't no pleasing you" by Chas and Dave.

Written from a mans pov about a horrible wife. But listen to it again sung by women......

I don't think it's sexist if we believe his side of the story 🤷🏻‍♀️

I raise you Working My Way Back To You. Now that fecker needs dealing with!

TempestTost · 15/03/2025 00:05

No.

BlondiePortz · 15/03/2025 00:15

So why not make new songs, why does the past need to be rewritten do modern people not have enough brain cells to create new content and realise they don't have to change what had happened before but can use their imagination and create new things

Do people really need all their thinking done for them?

It's not a sexist song though?

Okey dokey

Listen, the past is, well...the past.

But at the time, it was the 'present' when those songs we're written. They didn't have the notion of thinking "hold up. I'll just fly ahead 40years to see if some uni graduate with blue hair approves of this and I'll pop right back to edit it if not!"

We really think we know it all in this current era. But trust me , our current views won't date well either. Men are now women and women are now a subclass called "cis" women. Let's see how that sounds in 2078 ...

Plus how many rap songs in 2020's still talk of "bitches" "hoes" etc ...

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 15/03/2025 00:44

What do you mean by "revoice"? Get Rory Bremner to sing them as John Motson? I don't see how that would help.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/03/2025 01:34

I am 52 years old, I am sick of living in a world where only mens voices are heard. Its been all of my life.

I was suggesting that songs written about how awful women are should be sung by women and it would change the narrative. Clearly I am alone in thinking that would be an enlightening thing.

Trying to memoryhole history is creepy, weird and simply will not work. And there are plenty of sexist and offensive current songs and comments being shared all over the world. You cannot censor everything that offends you.

Write your own songs, poems etc or support those who write the things you like. Ignore those you do not, or speak up rationally where you can.

I find the notion that you would like to memoryhole history and alter other people's words and songs to suit you truly, genuinely appallingly offensive.

But since I do not have the right to live my life without feeling offended, I will just get on with my day.

kinkytoes · 15/03/2025 05:20

Did you miss all the songs women have sung about how awful men are?

There are quite a few of those too!

What fresh hell is the word “memoryhole”?? What on earth does it mean? 😳

It was invented, I believe by George Orwell (aka Eric Arthur Blair) somewhere between 1946 and 1949, though I should have left a space between the words as he did, memory hole rather than memoryhole.

It's not remotely fresh, though yes a world where the OP could rewrite other people's words to suit her own sensibilities does indeed sound like hell.

If you truly found it difficult to figure out what it meant, you can look up discussions about how the Party of Truth memory holed information that no longer fitted with their current version of history (in Orwell's book 1984).

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 15/03/2025 05:36

I suggest you drown out the antagonists on this thread and play Tori Amos ‘famous blue raincoat’ and Eva Cassidy ‘ain’t no sunshine’ on loop for 5 hours.

Pottedpalm · 15/03/2025 07:14

You are being ridiculous.

Ddakji · 15/03/2025 07:24

Lots of people completely failing to understand your point.

Hannah2024 · 15/03/2025 07:27

No, we all got it. We just disagree with her.

Els1e · 15/03/2025 07:29

I say leave the lyrics as they are. It's part of social history and a reflection of attitudes at the time. We may cringe but that's the understanding and learning point. And trying to tell Welsh rugby fans they can't sing Delilah will get you no where.

Ddakji · 15/03/2025 07:30

Having read your posts, no, I really don’t think you do. For a start, when someone does a cover of a song it doesn’t render the original (or any previous version) censored or non-existent.

I am also 52, and while obviously men’s voices were disproportionately heard across music, literature etc in the past, I’m not sure having Adele cover ‘Every Step You Take’ is going to alter that…

There are some songs that are creepy and weird or otherwise inappropriate. Revoicing changes them into something completely different that we can enjoy. I give you 'girls just wanna have fun'.

CarobyBlobs · 15/03/2025 07:44

@lorenrosko on TikTok rewrites and sings questionable songs from a woman’s perspective. She’s done Blurred Lines and some others

StealthMama · 15/03/2025 07:45

Given there are so many man hating songs out there, I think the music scene is pretty well balanced with disdain towards the opposite sex in both ways.

augustusglupe · 15/03/2025 08:07

Oh bugger off with that nonsense, how old are you??
I can & will listen to what I want when I want.
I don’t live in your world OP and I say that as a 60 year old who had a very domineering Dad.
I love all the old songs, well most, just for what they are, I’ve always loved music.
Not keen on the drivel we have now though and Rap music is vile, all of it!!
Off to put Darlin’ Nicki on again, love me a bit of Prince 😄

I prefer it to ‘revoice’.

RaininSummer · 15/03/2025 08:18

Leave history alone be it music, statues, paintings or whatever. If modern sensibilities are offended then don't listen to it or look at it. There may be case for removing statues of some people but into museums not to be destroyed. The past is another country.... Visit it and learn from it.
