to be a bit panicked that I can't seem to even get private treatment any more (ADHD)

Privately diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago and onto a good medication regime. The service I used was great until about a year ago when it took on a massive NHS contract. Now it's so bad it's unreal. Literally cannot get through on the phones. Can't make an appointment. Can't request a prescription renewal. If I hadn't used them effectively before now I'd think they must be a scam operation.

I've been looking into transferring but actually almost all of the private providers now look a bit rickety and I don't want to pay a transfer fee just to end up back in the same position. I am thinking about approaching a local private psychiatrist but I know a lot of them take a dim view of adult diagnoses (I get it, I recognise all the issues, but this has worked for me and my quality of life since being on medication was transformed).

I can't believe I'm going to be cast back into the way things were before and I can't see a way forward. I know a person shouldn't have to pay for healthcare anyway and I'm lucky that I theoretically could but actually in practice it seems like nobody can get what they need to feel well. Why is feeling well seen as some decadent luxury?! I feel genuinely embarrassed calling around trying to get help for this.

(Also if you have an adult ADHD patient in private treatment would you be able to recommend your provider?)

Have you spoken to your GP?
if you have your diagnosis and a history of prescriptions they might be happy to continue to prescribe

Are you in the UK? Can’t you get a shared care agreement? So your gp takes over?

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 14/03/2025 15:25

My dd has a private diagnosis of adhd and she can get her medication through our GP but has to have a private psychiatric appointment every year. And NHS can't change her dose or anything

Bigbrommieowner · 14/03/2025 15:38

My GP wouldn't do shared care and we only have the one GP in our town, so it's often not that easy, interested in replies here.

I'd also look for a GP who accepts shared care. And plan ahead. Put your repeat prescription in well in advance, ask to book in for your next check up during your current one.
