To hate LinkedIn

I've had a LinkedIn account for years. I always found it helpful to find new job opportunities and to read about updates in my industry. I am now job searching at the moment, so regularly login to check for vacancies. However, it now feels like every other toxic social media platform. If someone farts in their job they feel the need to make a post about it! And don't get me started on the 'experts' who post about their disdain about how someone writes an email/puts a presentation together/contacts them. I wish I could just delete the app, but need to keep it for the vacancies!

Snap! It's really gone downhill and is only a marketing tool for cringeworthy self promotion. I only use it if I have to and need to post about recruitment.

CharlieRight · 13/03/2025 13:33

Haven’t been on it for years but I recall it was a cesspit during COVID.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/03/2025 13:35

It's awful, I got my last role through Linkedin but the shite that is posted on there now. Unfortunately I have to check what competitors are up to but otherwise I wouldn't go near it.

veganmayo · 13/03/2025 13:40

It has become insufferably smug. It's a shame the platform is so useful as I'd love to delete it.

tinygreengrass · 13/03/2025 13:55

Yay! Thanks for the replies. I've found my people haha. The worst are the people that brown nose their insufferable companies (who wouldn't think twice about making them redundant) or all the bullshit posts about IWD! I don't get it. I genuinely don't mind the posts that are sharing some cool work or a project! However, the rest is painful. It now takes the top spot for most excruciating social media platform for me!

It seems to have become a new type of Facebook with colleagues
posting about their dogs, children and hobbies.

You need to curate your feed if what you're seeing bothers you. https://nikki-pilkington.com/clean-up-your-linkedin-feed-in-2-easy-steps/

This is brilliant. Thank you. There should just be an option 'I don't want to see any egotistical posts.'

I agree it has lost its way and not what it was originally about. Those who are smug and full of their own importance would no doubt find other ways, and perhaps better with hybrid working many people do not have to spend 7 or more hours a day with such people.

steelseries · 13/03/2025 14:02

Someone I know (who works in Marketing) literally had a heart attack and was back online the following week talking about what his experience had taught him about Sales.

TheBrightJadeReader · 13/03/2025 14:03

it seems like facebook but with your cv added to it

DancingCactusFlower · 13/03/2025 14:06

YANBU - I really don't like it and find it a necessary evil

tinygreengrass · 13/03/2025 14:13

@LlynTegid oh interesting. Perhaps the reason it's turned into such a cess pit, is because of hybrid working. These ego maniacs don't have the audience anymore, so they put it on LinkedIn

loveawineloveacrisp · 13/03/2025 14:30

I agree. Also job hunting and spend way too much time on there, feel like I need to limit myself to an hour a day or something.

EnergyCreatesReality · 13/03/2025 14:30

Personally, I hate LinkedIn and don't post anything myself but I work in marketing so it's a necessary evil. I'm constantly under pressure from clients to get more engagement on their posts and it's the part of my job I absolutely hate as it's all pointless crap, mostly written by ChatGPT nowadays!

Helloyouok · 13/03/2025 14:35

Oh god it's so awful isn't it. I mean I recently found my job through it so it's great in that respect, but all the self important me me me posts are just insufferable. I've spent so long on it recently that I have inadvertently started to daydream about how I'd write my own insufferable posts about things like making a good dinner or running a 5k, because this is the inane shit that people are now posting about.

And the arse licking, my god. Ridiculous.

GasPanic · 13/03/2025 14:53

I don't like it. When eveyone is linkedin what is the point of being linkedin ?

It was always going to run out of energy at some point though.

it appears to me to be mostly full of people peddling business bollocks.

Most of the people actually doing stuff that are good at their jobs are too busy to waste time on stuff like this.
