No response after interview

Son got to second stage interview for a bar job. He felt it went well and they said he would hear in 48 hours. That was over a week ago. He chased (politely) after 5 days. Still nothing. I'm so bloody cross. Why are some companies so unprofessional? This was a big deal for him (ND) and he's very upset to not even get a 'Thanks, but no thanks'
I'm almost tempted to email them myself (of course I won't but....)

To be honest, this is pretty standard now so he will have to get used to it.

I'm not saying it's right, but it's how things are. It's shite.

Overtheatlantic · 12/03/2025 16:49

Some companies are incredibly unprofessional in their recruitment practices. I’ve had this before and it’s a terrible feeling, like they didn’t think enough of you to say no thanks. It’s not him, it’s them!

SlinkiMalinki23 · 12/03/2025 16:50

It is shite. I just think that they will have received the email and thought 'nah, can't be bothered to spend 30 seconds replying'. So rude

Did they say he will hear from them or "if you don't hear from us in 48 hours, it's a no" thing?
It absolutely sucks, but if it's small bar or something, I wouldn't expect more.
Big companies with automation have no excuse

SlinkiMalinki23 · 12/03/2025 16:53

They said the 'nos' would hear first, so I think he is still hopeful. Which is sad

yeaah i had a job interview (in person) recently, went really well they more or less said it was mine, told me they'd let me know in 3/4 days. Didn't hear from them for over a month and got rejected, not a proper rejection email either just a basic generic one from indeed.
It is rude so be so blasé about it BUT I would give them the benefit of the doubt and just assume there were a lot of applicants.
The job market is difficult at the moment and very competitive, tell him not to worry and not be disheartened by it, it'll all work out x

I disagree. Not responding to applications is one thing, but if someone has made an effort to attend an interview, I absolutely think they are owed a quick phone call or a short email or whatever. It is common courtesy imo.

And yes, it is time consuming for employers but it is part of the job.

I always ask people at interview if they want me to call with the outcome or send it by email.

It's shit, OP, and I'm sorry that your ds doesn't seem to have got this one. There will be other opportunities... maybe better ones!

SlinkiMalinki23 · 12/03/2025 17:06

Thanks all - I hope something better will come along. It's not a small place it's part of a chain which doesn't make it better.

Chains can be absolute terrible fo whole process.
I was thinking about changing jobs and applied in upperprice hotel chain (back office). They did send rejection for the application last week.

I applied in August....

TheFunHare · 12/03/2025 17:15

So rude. I'm cross on your sons behalf. It's happened to me too and not only did I never hear but they also didn't reimburse my expenses for a cross country peak hour train. If someone has taken the time to prepare and show up for an interview then you let them know and provide feedback if its requested. It's just basic manners.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/03/2025 18:24

I went for a job via an agency. Didn't hear back even though they said they'd contact the company and come straight back to me. Then the agency asked me for feedback. I told them what I thought of the recruiter. It really, really pissed me off!

coxesorangepippin · 12/03/2025 18:25

Same here

Had second interview FOUR weeks ago - they said they'd be in touch in 2.5 weeks. I followed up. Said sorry, but they'd given it to an internal hire.

When would they have let me know??? Like, when???

mysecretshame · 12/03/2025 18:30

Yes, DS applied for loads of jobs retail and hospitality. If he was lucky enough to get an interview, they said he would hear "either way" in a few days - still waiting a year later.

FTHC · 12/03/2025 18:39

I went for an interview on a Friday morning, last person to be interviewed and told I'd hear something on the Monday. Ended up chasing them a week later, I knew by that point I'd not got it but I wanted it confirmed.

It's just rude especially if they tell you that they'll let you know either way. I hope your son gets something soon
