To think that men believe everything on IG/Tiktok is real

Maria971 · 11/03/2025 17:56

It takes seconds for influencers to edit/facetune their body, making waist narrower skin smoother etc, eyes bigger nose smaller etc…. It’s just as easy to edit videos as images.

But there are so many men who seem to simp over TikTok influencers when it’s not even the ‘real’ them… do these men really believe what they’re seeing is, well, real?

@Floatlikeafeather2 How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? I'm 28, and the vast majority of millennials and Gen Z go on Instagram/Tiktok. There are actually lots of men in their 40s, 50s, 60s following these fake women as well....

They are loser incels and or loser pervs and you are hanging out where they hang out online.

Find better places to hang out and you'll find better men there.

Maria971 · 12/03/2025 15:46

@Snorlaxo I actually think the men in relationships who have secret accounts following thousands of women are pretty yuk, it gives me the ick. You'd be surprised at how many men do it openly though.

In fairness, there were not that many men commenting, maybe about 50 comments on an influencer with 400K followers' video, but I doubt that 40 year old John is a bot 😅

Men can like different types of women, but I think lots of men lie about what they like so as not to upset women they know....

Has someone rejected you recently or something because your posts are coming across as intense and not natural? I can't put my finger on it

No - I never ask men out. And I haven't been going out or looking to date anyone recently as I'm busy. Plus, I don't want the kind of man who follows and idolises thousands of these women...And I get the impression that the majority of men my age do.

I thought that. You sound incredibly bitter @Maria971

I am not bitter, I am just pointing out a reality - that adored influencers post fake material - that lots of people seem to be unaware of.

OP posts:
Maria971 · 12/03/2025 15:55

@ItGhoul You sound like you're massively projecting your own insecurities and jealousies here.

Why should I be jealous of something that isn't even natural, ie Facetune? Lots of young women are insecure about their bodies, for various reasons. But being insecure doesn't entail jealousy. I could edit photos and videos of myself if I wanted to; I could get fillers and a boob job if I wanted to (well, after payday!).

It's the fact that people believe the fakery, and I think many do, that irks me. It is what it is, but I can ask the question on Mumsnet if I want 😂

However stupid it is to believe that these pictures and effects are real, it doesn’t hold a candle to the immense stupidity of having injections or surgery to imitate the look of these faces and bodies.

Yes, but those women just look want to look good in the eyes of their boyfriends/husbands/potential dates, who likely follow and like a lot of the content that the women are trying to imitate.

Of course. Not all men like the look, but some people are suggesting most prefer the natural look. Which is a bit daft when you think of all the wealthy sort after men, like footballers, who could have their choice of natural or not, and often don't choose natural. Even SM is not 'natural' as in your average woman. She's very slim, wears a lot of make up, has dyed blonde 'done' hair and wears very glam clothes.

Being slim is a natural thing - we can all be slim if we take care of ourselves.

By unnatural I meant fillers, make up, hair extensions etc etc.

Sienna does wear a lot of make up, but even that seems less than these influencers.

She has a natural body - she doesn't have massive fake breasts. She isn't usually covered in fake tan. She doesn't have the 'influencer' look.

All celebrities have professional make up artists etc, but there are more natural looking ones.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 12/03/2025 16:11

I have noticed that a lot of men seem to be less aware of filters. A bit like they can think someone is wearing no makeup just because it isn't obvious.

I am unsure if it is just because they are less observant or because we are more clued in because algorithms and our peers bring these things to our attention.

I've seen many men compliment the natural beauty of women and insult women who supposedly aren't (online and off) and then been gobsmacked when informed about the (in my opinion obvious) filters/fillers/botox/makeup etc.

Maria971 · 11/03/2025 20:30

I know women believe it too, but the believing has a different effect. For men, they simp and comment, ‘perfection…10/10… etc’. Women look and think, ‘well I look rubbish in comparaison…’, even though they’re comparing themself to Facetune…

Surely we women all have at least one friend who looks as average as we do IRL, but like a cartoon character "hot woman" on SM? That knowledge helps to stop unflattering comparison in its tracks.

At the same time, I also know women who are stunning IRL, but they are mostly teens and twentysomethings (i.e. my DDs' ages) so there's no pressure on me to compete with them!

ConnieSlow · 12/03/2025 17:00

Floatlikeafeather2 · 12/03/2025 00:46

All the men you do might, OP, but I don't know a single man who does because I don't know a single man who goes on Instagram or Tiktok. That should balance it out for you.

This. I don't know idiots like you are describing op. Neither do I know any shallow women too! At the end of the day, everyone has a brain to use so you can't blame stupid decisions people make because of SM.

Maria971 · 12/03/2025 18:39

@FeministUnderTheCatriarchy Love your username by the way...

Anyway, yes filters, but I think men are also unaware of Facetune and similar editing apps, which let you edit videos as well.

I'm twenty something. I do know lots of women, and I see lots of influencers in the gym I go to in my city centre, who look good in real life but still nothing like their instagram pictures. Some, if I'm being honest, don't even look that nice without much make up in the gym...
There are lots of young attractive people, but Instagram/Tiktok are like hyper-real versions of people.

OP posts:
Maria971 · 12/03/2025 18:43

@ConnieSlow It isn't anyone in particular that I know, it's just behaviour I see online, and anecdotal stories from friends about what their boyfriends do.

Aww thank you!

And yes, sorry I was thinking about all those things when I typed filters.

The body tuning in videos is actually getting insanely good. You used to be able to tell by slightly warped backgrounds but not anymore.

I saw a creator show it both ways and I have to admit I don't know if I would have caught her doing it if she hadn't told us all.
If people are clever and subtle enough, they get away with it... And it's actually scary. I worry a lot for younger girls.

I never worried about my skin, even on showd like The Hills you didn't see fillers or botox and you could see Lauren Conrads wrinkles and other girls blemishes etc.

Nowadays there aren't examples of normal faces on TV and even social media skin experts and influences are using incredibly good filters to show off their "glass skin".

The world is crazy now and a lot of men don't have the critical thinking skills to think 'hmmmm, what I'm seeing on my screen doesn't match up with what I see in the real world.'
(a bit like porn and their expectations about women's genitals and bodies).

Yes, the body tuning - it's ridiculous. I don't think people responding to this thread really understand the extent of it, and the sheer number of young men who follow, fawn over and believe that the woman in the video/image really does look like that. Especially the videos.

Do you follow Stephanie Lange on Youtube? She shows some of these body and face warping apps and tries to draw attention to them. Stuff like this..

Are you a man or a woman?

Maybe it makes them 'stupid', but I don't think it does. All they want is to look good and for their partners/dates to find them attractive. And if the potential date is likely to follow and drool over an enhanced video, then it's likely the young women are going to try to emulate that as best they can. Nobody wants a partner that doesn't find them attractive.

Edited

Nobody wants to turn up on a date and the person they're meeting is looking for someone else either 😅

Maria971 · 12/03/2025 22:47

@Poppyseeds79 you mean when the person doesn’t look like their dating profile photos? 😂I’m sure it happens. But none if these influencers look like their content so I don’t know what a man would do if he sent on a date with one… 😂

I was talking about permanent or semi-permanent tweakments, like surgery, fillers, hair extensions etc…. These just don’t disappear.

OP posts:
Porcelainpig · 12/03/2025 23:02

My other half says he'd run a mile from an instatype. Finds them too vacuous and high maintenence, but no doubt he would just after a sporty, slim, outdoorsy natural looking beauty which is also an unattainable image of perfection for most women too. It's easier to do fake beauty than try to be the naturally beautiful athletic type.

ChompandaGrazia · 12/03/2025 23:21

Ah, by men you mean idiots. Do try not to confuse the two.

There are a lot of men out there who aren’t on TikTok or Instagram. Perhaps if you stopped using it then you’d stop seeing all these images and these comments. I never use them and it’s like influencers simply don’t exist.

Maria971 · 13/03/2025 01:01

@ChompandaGrazia About 95% of Gen Z and millenial men, and a good number of middle aged (40 +) men are on Tiktok and Instagram, unfortunately.

Women think men like Katie Price.

Men actually like Sydney Sweeney.

See the difference?

somewhereoverthechipshop · 14/03/2025 21:19

Agree..a prime example of this is Lauren Goodger from towie, She popped up on my insta feed and I couldn’t believe how filtered and facetuned her pictures were. Looks nothing like she does in real life. Men pay money to see her fake photos on only fans apparently. She’s not the only one like this..I pity the men who believe in this shite and they deserve to be scammed really.

Nobody thinks men like Katie Price. And Sydney Sweeney is edited in the magazine photos, but I see your point.

Basically men like big boobs provided the woman is slim, and they’d prefer ´real’ boobs. That said lots of celebrities have implants and men don’t know the difference. You can’t always tell implants any more.
