To be uncomfortable after my manager went on a rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle during a team meeting?

So, today, in our team meeting, my manager went on a full-on rant about how much she hates Meghan Markle. It seemed completely out of place and unnecessary, especially considering the meeting was meant to be about work. It got a bit awkward and no one really knew how to react.

I get that people have opinions but I just felt like it was unprofessional to bring something like that up during a work meeting. It felt like a personal issue being projected onto everyone else.

AIBU to feel uncomfortable about this or is it just me being overly sensitive?

Harry has backpedaled on his claim the RF made racist comments

Well, he was probably told to by his dad or felt he had to.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 11/03/2025 13:13

@ParrotParty , I remember my first learning of her and I thought 'Oh no! She's not right for Prince Harry'. i didn't register that she was mixed race. She seemed 'false' and still does.

CatsChin · 11/03/2025 13:14

OMG even this thread is mad "She caused the queen visible distress" - Jeez, those of us who are old enough heard all this shite with Diana! I'm sure there are PhDs on it...

Psychostates · 11/03/2025 13:14

I am sick of keyboard warriors so intent on judging people they don't know. Of course, you can get a vague impression of somebody based on what the media choose to spin; how much of it is true we don't know. Whether you like somebody or not based on what you ignorantly 'choose' to believe, is up to you. However, a deranged rant about another human being is not okay.
Absolutely ridiculing a person for ridiculous petty reasons, based on some articles, and a TV show is crazy. I would love to see what the ranters themselves have achieved in life, and any negative flaws they have; although the ignorant first impression definately makes me think there's a lot of them. If these people want to take aim at anybody, turn to Prince Andrew, corruption within the RF, or Trump, using the clear factual information we have about these individuals, not hearsay.

I doubt that

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 11/03/2025 13:15

And why do we never see her children

To shield them from the batshit crazies out there who are utterly obsessed with her and them?!
You see the back of them in photos - don't blame them in the slightest for not putting their faces out there. Good on them. More celebrities should do that.

You doubt it? You'd rather believe it was a lie than the very likely possibility that the Royal Family are trying to limit their reputational damage.

How would you know who is right for Prince Harry. You have (presumably) never met him.

You dont honestly believe that Charles would have told him to retract that statement and Harry would have done it? That would make Harry look like he was a child and not a 40 year old man

I couldn't bring myself to care about this one way or the other tbh. I think the concept of "being unprofessional" is a bit silly, given that most of us probably do quite ordinary jobs. If the woman in question is a simultaneous interpreter at the peace talks in Jeddah and suddenly abandoned what she should have been doing/saying to rant about Meghan Markle you might have a point. Everyone sitting around looking embarrassed strikes me as silly too. Why not react? I think I would probably have laughed and asked her what MM had done to shit on her cornflakes this morning. But then I'm probably quite unprofessional too.

Have you ever been been in a professional work meeting?
It's not " silly " to think the managers behaviour is odd nor are colleagues looking embarrassed being " silly" either it's a work place she being paid to do a job not rant about MM and mske her colleagues feel uncomfortable.

AnnaBalfour · 11/03/2025 13:18

An awful lot of people don’t understand nuance or how people like the Kardashians, Megan Markle are so disliked. And so confuse not liking a personality with racism. Awfully simplistic and lack of thinking ability.

But YANBU I would feel uncomfortable too even though I don’t admire MM or find her interesting, I do find the hatred she elicits uncomfortable but I do not think it’s due to her being mixed race and find it equally uncomfortable that people truly believe the reason she’s disliked is simply because of that:

MotherJessAndKittens · 11/03/2025 13:19

Very unprofessional and presumably nothing to do with your work unless it's a newspaper. I think she gets enough hassle from our press so wouldn't ever rant about someone I don't really know.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 11/03/2025 13:20

Just what I was thinking. There are many reasons to feel a dislike of this woman, why are people so quick to shout racist to anyone who dislikes this tedious and vacuous woman.

You don't know either of them .

She put herself down as caucasian on her CV apparently - though this does not mean white, of course. She played her background down to get parts - which in the racist US doesn't seem that venal. Her race/colour was never an issue in the UK anyway, quite the contrary: she was welcomed as a breath of fresh air.

The duchess is not mega popular in the UK, given that her behaviour caused the late Queen visible distress and that by her demand to go to Balmoral on the day HMQ died she delayed the plane taking the then Duke of Cambridge and HMQ's other sons. The delay was probably not the cause of their arrival after HMQ's death, but the lack of empathy leaves a bad taste.
And why do we never see her children? We see Harry's brother's children all the time.

I'm assuming that she wants to protect her children from racist remarks. Racists often hate the offspring of mixed race relationships as they see it as 'polluting' the white race.

Obviously we have to take the posters on here that utterly despise Meghan Markle at their word that they don't have a racist bone in their bodies, but social media is chock full of racists and white supremacists who would have a field day commenting on the appearance of Meghan's children.

WinterMorn · 11/03/2025 12:02

I don’t disagree. What I do take issue with is the implication that anyone who dislikes MM is racist.

I made another post clarifying that there is a visible link between the online community that violently loathes her and other racist vibes.

Of course I believe it! This is not a normal family. The King's family have to bow and curtsy in front of him, just as he had to do to the Queen. The King has a lot of power over all of them. He decides what they all can and can't do. He's making all the decisions about Andrew, for example.

I wouldn't want my children in the.public eye either if I was her ,some people are vile enough her and PH ,why would.you subject your child to it.

ProfessionalPirate · 11/03/2025 12:03

How ridiculous. So the only possible reason for disliking MM is racism, and anyone who claims otherwise is in denial of their own racism.

I suppose it’s an effective way to shut down any legitimate criticism of a person.

Not if you read what I actually said which is "usually" not "always". Hit a nerve?

I am old enough to remember Diana. That was a poor marriage, badly made and both were fools to go along with it - inevitably it ended in tears. But Ms Markle was Prince Harry's free choice. She has accused the British people, who paid 30M for the security at her wedding, of being racist towards her. This was never the case - she was very much welcomed and people looked forward to her being an asset to the RF. I suspect her ideas of being a princess had more to do with Disney than reality.

x2boys · 11/03/2025 13:28

Well, she might be protecting them - but staying in the UK as a working royal was the best protection she could get for them, and she has chosen not to take that path.
I am myself the mother of mixed-race DC.

Psychostates · 11/03/2025 13:28

I admire those such as MM, who are in the public eye and choose to keep their children out of it. When they're old enough, it is for them to decide imho.
