To think that if everyone who thinks Elon Musk is a menace boycotted X he would have less power

I think I am stating the obvious but someone will soon be explaining why my simple logic is flawed.

personally i stopped using X months and months ago but finally deactivated my accounts last week.

Nutmuncher · 11/03/2025 10:29

Yes and no. I find X useful for breaking news and keeping up to date with what’s going on on all sides of this international political Rubik’s cube. Ignoring him won’t make him go away.

BusyExpert · 11/03/2025 10:31

he is not a menace and people who think so need to calm down.

ShriekingTrespasser · 11/03/2025 10:34

I think a lot would change if people stopped using X. Mostly for the better.

H34th · 11/03/2025 10:37

Many people left. However, I think too many people are still indifferent, not sure what to think, or just hanging around not to miss anything.
If businesses left all at once it would be very noticeable. I think they are just waiting for a better alternative.

Meanwhile Tesla’s stock has declined every week for seven straight weeks.
The company is the worst performer on the S&P 500 so far this year, cratering 45% since Jan 1.

SomewhereinSuberbia · 11/03/2025 10:52

I think that I don't like much of what Elon Musk does but I appreciate that he took away the censorship regime on twitter that discriminated against feminist voices like Meghan Murphey from Canada who disagreed with trans politics impact on women's rights, they were getting banned and there was only mumsnet that allowed some discussion on this issue because all the silicon valley tech bro's thought the same way.

So even if I don't like Elon's politics I would rather have a duality of platforms who believe different things in the market place, rather than them all believing the same thing and working in lockstep together with identical belief systems.

KrisAkabusi · 11/03/2025 11:38

Because his non-supporters have already stopped using X. And because he doesn't need it any more. Most of his money comes from other sources, and he's got the power he needs from his position within Trump's government.

No? Interesting. I do think he's a menace, absolutely. All those people who've lost jobs and it's worth remembering the largest number of DEI hires were ex forces veterans.
He has no manners, respect for anyone or morals, just a shed load of money to buy new toys with.

EmmaMaria · 11/03/2025 14:26

I have never used X and don't have an account. And I also believe Musk and his cronies are dangerous. But those who will listen to him and agree with him and his ilk will do so no matter what anyone else does.

On the other hand, the scope of https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-public-bodies-banned-from-imposing-their-own-boycotts-against-foreign-countries could always be widened to make all consumer boycotts illegal (as Trump seems to be hinting at ?)

UK public bodies banned from imposing their own boycotts against foreign countries

New Bill will ban UK public bodies from imposing their own boycotts

I don't have an X account and yes I agree with you but it isn't that easy for everyone to leave. Until something like bluesky expands into a much bigger platform, a lot of people won't leave their following behind to start afresh. Many non Elon fans, companies and public bodies are still on there as there is a viable alternative yet.

CasperGutman · 11/03/2025 14:59

I've stopped using it and cancelled my account. So has everyone from my kids' schools to their swimming club. At work we've all been instructed to remove the link to the corporate account from our email signatures. I can't imagine there's anyone much still on there, is there?

LaPalmaLlama · 11/03/2025 14:59

Twitter used to be a left wing cesspit of bile and intolerance and now it's a right wing cesspit of bile and intolerance. Plus ca change.

Instructing public bodies not to boycott entire countries is a million miles away from "making all consumer boycotts illegal". How would that even work? Especially with big ticket items like cars. I only buy one can every decade or so, and effectively 'boycott' every supplier but one.

Porcelainpig · 11/03/2025 15:05

Never been on Twitter or X, it has always been a crock of shit, but a million times more so now.

We don't need it.

Only misogynists, bigots, racists and narcissists.

If arseholes could fly, X would be an airport. I wish they just stayed there instead of travelling though.

Your correct menace is far too tame a word for someone slinging around Nazi salutes

HangryLilacGoose · 11/03/2025 15:28

I'd happily see it banned tbh.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/03/2025 15:38

Never use Twitter

And I'm always delighted every morning to see Tesla stock has fallen further Smile

This is the case for me, I still get work enquiries via twitter in a way I don’t get on the other platforms yet.

Sunshineandoranges · 11/03/2025 16:07

Some interesting points of view. I think far right politics is becoming quite prominent in many countries. Far right or far left both worry me. Too much war…death and destruction. I think Trump, Vance and Musk are very right wing. Profit from and the power of X increases that power for Musk. I don’t think it should be banned but would prefer it to be less popular.

People say he's the richest man in the world but X and Tesla stocks have plummeted?

HangryLilacGoose · 11/03/2025 16:19

Have just seen (government official) Musk calling Sen. Mark Kelly (a former Navy Pilot) a "traitor" (because he said the US should continue to support Ukraine).

He's absolutely deranged, and very very dangerous.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 11/03/2025 16:19

Problem is that there are plenty of really nasty people to still keep twix going.
I left it when he started trying to interfere in UK politics by stirring trouble around the riots after the Southport attack.
Personally I would be very pleased if he was deemed an undesirable alien or whatever the term would be and not allowed any business interests here including social media.

jeaux90 · 11/03/2025 16:27

Broken clock and all that.

He enabled free speech back on the platform at least. So many feminists were banned until a year ago.
