Granny card on Mothers Day

BeTaupeBear · 10/03/2025 13:39

I’ve noticed in the shops a lot of Happy Mothers Day Granny cards - I’m sure there always have been but I’ve only just noticed!

I wondered if it was the done thing for children to give their Grans cards?

I don’t remember doing it when I was younger but I have a baby so will need to decide if we will be and wondered what the consensus is

AIBU- yes totally normal and expected to give Granny a card from grandchild
AINBU- not expected, you just get a card for your own mums

Consumerism gone mad. Ignore!

toomuchfaff · 10/03/2025 13:40

Card companies will do anything to drive sales...

I know people who get excited over cards like this. 🤢
It's gotten out of hand really. There's already a grandparents day (invented by the card companies AFAIK).

steff13 · 10/03/2025 13:43

I would imagine there are people who don't have their mother for whatever reason and their grandmother is filling that role.

Fridaysgirl17 · 10/03/2025 13:44

We always sent one to our Granny's & I'm in my 40's & my kids always gave my mom one when she was here, all her grandchildren did & I do the same for my dad on Father's Day. I suppose it's what works for your family & it works for us

hereismydog · 10/03/2025 13:44

Doesn’t matter if it’s the ‘done thing’ by other people! If you want to get one, do. If you don’t, don’t.

For some people, their Gran will have fulfilled the 'mother' role in their life?

That’s a really good point! Thank you I think your right

We always did this as kids and now I do with my children - it’s a nice touch and my family enjoy it

I see the situation all the time because of my work; mom and dad aren't able to care for the kids for whatever reason and so the grandparents step in. People who don't work in a similar role might not realize how prevalent it actually is.

ScholesPanda · 10/03/2025 13:55

My children have always sent a card and flowers to their grandmother's on Mother's day- it isn't a new thing.

I always thought it was an opportunity to say thank you to them and show them we cared, but people are right- looked at cynically, it probably just makes more money for florists and card manufacturers.

dementedpixie · 10/03/2025 13:57

We send gran cards on mothers day. We have never done grandparents day. That's a relatively new invention

Coffeeishot · 10/03/2025 14:01

Not your friends or family I hope? Do they know that they make you nauseous?

Op does it really matter a card that makes somebodies gran happy for a few minutes while they read a card it's no big deal really .

DisappearingGirl · 10/03/2025 14:02

We send a granny card to my step mum as she is a lovely granny to my kids and wouldn't otherwise get a card from us (and her own son is lovely but I don't think he does cards!).

However we don't send granny cards to my mum and MIL because we usually just include the kids' names on their mothers day card.

Coffeeishot · 10/03/2025 14:04

I saw "you are like a mum to me" cards the other day thought those were nice.

Why does it matter what everyone else does?

If you want to get a card then get one.

If you don’t - then don’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

This was me growing up. I was delighted to see these cards when I was an adult and could send one to her

5128gap · 10/03/2025 14:10

I get them from my DGC. I do a lot of care for them and I think its my DD and DDiLs way of (very generously) recognising that. Warms my heart.

Yes same here.

AhwoofDuggee · 10/03/2025 14:13

We don't acknowledge 'Grandparents Day' and that has never been brought up. But my eldest DD designs hand made decorated cards for the nannies as a nice gesture on Mothers Day which goes down well.

Flossflower · 10/03/2025 14:13

I think it is just card companies trying to grab more of your money.
I am a Granny and I do regular childcare. I do not want or get one. My children do sign my Mother’s Day card from the grandchildren too.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 10/03/2025 14:17

Nope! And cards from children should be homemade.

the only way to fight consumerism is to check out of it...

Adelstrop · 10/03/2025 14:19

Any day now the card manufactures will come up with ‘total stranger day’, when we are encouraged to send a card to someone standing at the nearest bus stop.
