Car theft

Two neighbours have had cars stolen recently, and I’m wondering what I can do to stop mine from being next! I’m looking at a camera but I’d have to mount it quite low down (single story extension) to get the right angle so not sure if it’s worth it. Would a steering lock be any good? I’ve seen mixed reviews online.

Do you keep your key in a out if the way place, overnight etc? Is it in a Faraday pouch? Steering and wheel locks do prevent thefts, if they've invested in the equipment for keyless cars.

You can't do anything. If they want your car they will take it.

Many years ago, I used to run a chain between the steering wheel and the brake pedal and put a padlock on it. Not many people carry a set of wire cutters in their back pocket.

There is a spate of key cloning going on around here. Some neighbours had their car stolen and a week later their other car was stolen. Their insurance was not very nice about it.
Keep your keys away from your front door or in a metal box or faraday pouch.
I am safe in my 10 year old mini- I think they are stealing to order and no one is ordering that!

Steering lock. Good deterrent, but people don't tend to use them.

Ours was stolen a couple of years ago from our drive. There was a spate locally. We were told the thieves waited in supermarket carpark, when they saw a car worthy of stealing they read the key with their machine as owner got out carrying the key. Then followed them home and came back later that night to take the car. But they also read keys inside the house by walking round perimeter until the machine picks up the key.

We use faraday pouches and are very mindful in supermarkets, take keys upstairs in the pouch when we go to bed and put them in a faraday box. We use a steering lock and have cameras.

But they don't care about cameras. You can watch numerous videos of thieves stealing cars on YouTube. They're unrecognisable all in black with masks, hoodies etc.

Only certain cars will be stolen though. Check if yours is on the list of most commonly stolen cars. Ours was number one!

The resulting issues with car insurance have been horrendous and we now pay a fortune.

Steering wheel lock
Key pouches
Wheel clamp

Thanks all, it’s not keyless fortunately, but I hide the key every night and have it in a pouch anyway. Bizarrely, one of the ones stolen was new and keyless, and the other was a really old one that you would have thought would be safe! I think I’ll get a steering lock and try not to stress too much otherwise.

In my area old Volkswagen cars are being targeted and stolen for parts

biscuitsandbooks · 09/03/2025 14:19

Steering lock.
Dash cam that links to your phone and goes off when the car is moved or entered.

HansHolbein · 09/03/2025 14:20

Bollard?

0ohLarLar · 09/03/2025 14:22

Some brands are targeted far more than others. Range rovers always but then sometimes random other brands or nippy fast joyride vehicles.

0ohLarLar · 09/03/2025 14:24

Get a mazda. No one nicks them and they are great, reliable cars
