I avoid sainsburys beacuse of the awful self-service check outs

Sainsbury's have the worst self-service checkouts IMO

I thought Sainsbury's branded themselves as one of the 'better' supermarkets but the self-service checkouts at my local store are awful. They constantly find faults, and require checking by an assistant because the computer isn't weighing things correctly or god knows what.

Then when you try to leave, you are locked in and have to scan your receipt - which you weren't told to do at the start, so if you haven't printed a receipt you have an akward argument with the assistant, trying to prove you did pay actually, and who hates you because they have already been over to enter their pin number sixteen times at your checkout!

I just don't go in to Sainsury's anymore! I'd rather spend my life savings in Waitrose, keep my dignity, and not be treated like a criminal

Use the manned checkouts and avoid putting people out of a job?

My Sainsburys has recently taken all manned checkouts out, so don't have that option anymore. I shop in Tesco now.

noworklifebalance · 09/03/2025 06:50

Our Sainsbury’s automatically prints the receipt - first time I shoved it in my bag not realising that you needed it to leave but didn’t make that mistake again.

I don’t blame Sainsbury’s for the receipt scanning of random bag checks. I blame fellow shoppers who steal. It’s not a judgement about me as an individual.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 09/03/2025 06:54

I avoid Sainsburys December 1-31 because of the mariah carey overload but feel like the gates are an appropriate solution to the issue of shoplifting. I don’t mind self service tills per se, but don’t want staff out of jobs because of them.

Ma1lle · 09/03/2025 06:54

I love Sainsbury’s but our massive one only has 2 tills open on a Friday night now when I do my shop. There is not enough space to put items for a big shop through self service so I’m considering switching too. Which is a shame as I love their range, products, commitment to packaging reduction etc.

Candystripes85 · 09/03/2025 06:55

My local ones don’t have a receipt gate but my primark does and I’ve never really understood the point. All it proves is that people paid for something. If you were a shoplifter surely you wouldn’t just walk out with a whole trolley of basket full of stuff, you would pay for a couple of items and shove the rest in your bag? I’m not a shoplifter so maybe I’m wrong but I can’t imagine it would make a blind bit of difference.

The one thing I do avoid Sainsburys for is vacuum packed mince that has the texture of dog food!

Can't do a link for some reason but here's a pic from BBC news

How do these scales work when you have a kid sitting in the trolley seat? There’s no way I would be removing my son to get out the shop, it’s hard enough to get the little bugger in to begin with!

Hunkermedown · 09/03/2025 07:02

There are 2 Sainsbury's in my town. The big one, which used to be ok but has recently installed the gates and smaller one which has had gates for a while. The smaller one we used to call 'the horrible Sainsbury's'. But now they are both horrible.

I recently got a couple of things and forgot to print the receipt. I was able to duck under the gate, I'm not very tall. It felt like a win but I now prefer to go to coop even though it costs more as it's less stressful.

Use Scan and Go instead. It's much easier than scanning at the end.

DappledThings · 09/03/2025 07:03

Not got a problem with the self checkouts other than most of them seem to have removed the option to mute them. You can turn the volume down but not mute them as you used to be able to.

No problem with the mince either. But having to take a receipt would annoy me. If there's not a bin right by the gate to put it into I'd be looking round for a staff member to hand it to once I'm out.

Iwantitidontwantit · 09/03/2025 07:09

Both the Sainsbury's close to me are horrible! They always feel grubby, and never enough staff. What happens if you go in and don't buy anything? Do you have to get the staff to let you out?

The tesco near to .e is great. It has 4 till areas, scan and shop, self scan for baskets, self scan for trolleys with a long belt and normal tills! That said I use Ocado for my shop, but have had no issues with Tesco when I've needed it

lollynip · 09/03/2025 07:14

We don't have the receipt gates, but my biggest complaint is how filthy the self serves are - not just in my local - every Sainsbury's and Tescos I go in.

Fatloss · 09/03/2025 07:14

I don’t have a problem at Sainsbury’s self checkout but there aren’t any gates.

No thanks. I’m tired and would worry that I’d forget to scan something also IT problems at the end would be a hassle. I just want a decent amount of checkouts- not. 2!

Where in the country are these gates, I've never seen them

Ive not seen any in the uk, there was one in the Edeka we went to in Germany but there were no self service tills so we had a receipt.

suburburban · 09/03/2025 07:39

They do seem to have less manned tills and if I do a big shop I won't self scan

Receipt gate is good as there is so much shop lifting everywhere

JeremiahBullfrog · 09/03/2025 07:58

Surely if it's your regular shop you don't make the receipt mistake more than once??

Post-checkout receipt gates seem to be very standard on the continent.

Perfectlystill · 09/03/2025 07:59

Lidl make you scan your receipt too.

Life was so much better 20 years ago.

Five years ago. That's when life was better.

Littlebelina · 09/03/2025 08:18

Some morrisons have them as well now....

GettingOlderandBetter · 09/03/2025 08:25

IDontHateRainbows · 08/03/2025 17:12

I can't stand the receipt-gates. I usually have scrunched up the receipt and put it absent mindedly in some far flung corner of my bag, and my hands are too full to fish it out. And I resent the underlying assumption that I could be a theif!

Sadly if so many people weren’t stealing from supermarkets there would be no need for receipts to be shown but unfortunately it’s not the case. Blame the thieves not the shops.

CandidHedgehog · 09/03/2025 08:34

How do receipt gates actually work? The one time I had to use one, I’d gone in for a chocolate bar. OK, my receipt showed I paid for the £1.69 bag of chocolate but the gate has no way of knowing if I’ve stolen something else?

Edited to say: I did not steal anything else.

It’s a deterrent. No, it won’t stop all theft but it’ll stop some.

CheckoutChump · 09/03/2025 09:02

There’s a reason for my username.

Sainsburys is my closest supermarket by a long way. The only people seemingly working in there are the customers and 1 stressed person looking after all the self-checkout areas - which is now trolleys as well as baskets.

Sainsburys business model is now getting customers to work for them for free. I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone working the checkout. Self checkout trolley areas are hideous.

And there is nobody anywhere to ask questions re location. Ours has moved everything about and there are no staff in there to advise on anything!

Ma1lle · 09/03/2025 09:04

Which other supermarkets have plenty of manned tills and staff?
