I avoid sainsburys beacuse of the awful self-service check outs

Sainsbury's have the worst self-service checkouts IMO

I thought Sainsbury's branded themselves as one of the 'better' supermarkets but the self-service checkouts at my local store are awful. They constantly find faults, and require checking by an assistant because the computer isn't weighing things correctly or god knows what.

Then when you try to leave, you are locked in and have to scan your receipt - which you weren't told to do at the start, so if you haven't printed a receipt you have an akward argument with the assistant, trying to prove you did pay actually, and who hates you because they have already been over to enter their pin number sixteen times at your checkout!

I just don't go in to Sainsury's anymore! I'd rather spend my life savings in Waitrose, keep my dignity, and not be treated like a criminal

Me too. I no longer shop there. Went to M and S food shop today and had a nice conversation with the lady serving

NooNakedJacuzziness · 08/03/2025 17:40

Tesco are trialling giant trolley scales to weigh your self scan shopping apparently

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 08/03/2025 17:40

Self scan every time here.

The receipt gate is only a faff until you get used to it.

Use the manned checkouts and avoid putting people out of a job?

What manned checkouts? My local Sainsbury’s ripped them out to install the trolley self checkouts. The one left is almost never open (when I go in - I work weird hours. Maybe it’s staffed during peak hours, IDK).

Can't do a link for some reason but here's a pic from BBC news

The worst thing is they’ve changed what the computer voice says from “have you scanned your nectar card” to “have you scanned nectar”.

Wtaf? Why change it to make less sense?

and the loose fruit/veg not being in alphabetical order

They must vary a lot. The two Sainsburys near us are both the most straightforward self service checkouts around 😆 Rarely have conniptions over weight mismatches (unlike Lidl), the tills automatically print the receipt so you can't forget to ask for one, and there are always staff around to help.

Tesco Metro on the other hand...

Same with me. Sainsbury’s self checkout near me is fine (and no gates). The local Waitrose on the other hand gives you approximately a quarter of a second to put the item on the scale then starts demanding you do so. Barely enough time to put it in a pile, certainly no time to actually get it in a bag!

I’m not a slow shopper either.

Never had a problem at my Sainsbury’s but I always print a receipt as you never know

Same, ours is fine. We don't get locked in though. I'm a fan of a self service checkout, I find it less tedious than standing in a queue for a cashier and having to make small talk.

Seeline · 08/03/2025 17:51

Don't have gates at ours, but the Sainsbury's self-checkouts are the worst!
They won't even let you use your own bags without a staff member agreeing it.
I never use them if I can avoid it, but we only have 4 tills left, and there is usually only one open. The queue is usually long but everyone still refuses to use the self checkout

I ask them to open one for me.

I don’t have that long to wait around. I get what you are saying about making a point but that ship has sailed in my view and I’m not going to massively inconvenience myself plus make some poor member of staff’s life much harder to make a point.

I respect that you are still trying, though.

Thatcannotberight · 08/03/2025 18:07

Our Sainsbury's has NO manned checkouts except the 5 items or fewer kiosk. The checkouts don't recognise your own bags and you regularly need staff assistance if you dare to move anything or put something too far away on the bagging area. 😬🤣

Use the manned checkouts and avoid putting people out of a job?

It’s too late here as they’ve got rid of loads of staff and there are only a couple of manned checkouts left. They’ve also permanently closed the changing rooms due to cutting so many staff.

The self checkouts here are ok; you don’t need a receipt to get out and my 12yo manages to use them with no issues! I still prefer manned checkouts though. When you buy clothes here the self checkouts don’t disable the tags, so you set the alarm off as you walk out.

GoldenSunflowers · 08/03/2025 18:20

Never heard of gates and trolley scales. I’ve just been to our local one this afternoon and there were 3 manned checkouts. The prices, though 😤 Just two bags of shopping in which the most expensive item was £15 on Sharpies, total £158!

Whereas as the queue for our self-checkouts is often 30-40 people long. The longest I’ve counted is 72 people (yes, I was that bored and had nothing better to do than count how many people were ahead of me). It’s got to the point where it can be quicker to walk 30 mins to Tesco and back than queue in Sainsbury’s (which is literally opposite my building).

Same

NoWordForFluffy · 08/03/2025 18:31

@5foot5 Maybe it is just your local one.
I shop at Sainsbury's all the time, mostly using self scan as we go round the shop.

Almost never have a problem. Ditto the other self service tills.

Honestly I would hate to go back to the old way of having to put a big shop through the manned checkout.

I'm with you. I either scan on my phone, or a handset, and then whizz through checkout. I'm a big fan.

Moonlightdust · 08/03/2025 18:36

Oh yes you’re not wrong! I like Sainsbury’s too but their self check out machines are the pits!!

In my local Sainsbury’s the last time I shopped there was only 1 manned til with a long queue!

ilovesooty · 08/03/2025 18:42

You spend your life savings at the supermarket? It all sounds a bit dramatic.

Same. Meant to say I use the smart shop app and scan as I go.

So easy. It went down once and it was such a faff, plus the store practically backed up with customers trying to pay.

Endofyear · 08/03/2025 18:53

I use the self checkout at my local Sainsbury's, there's no gates or receipt checking and it's absolutely fine. Staff are all lovely!

RachelLikesTea · 08/03/2025 18:58

Our local Sainsbury’s and Lidl has those receipt scan gates. It’s not hard, you just print the receipt and scan it. Definitely no needed to start arguments with the staff!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/03/2025 19:01

I avoid Sainsbury's because of the mince.
