I avoid sainsburys beacuse of the awful self-service check outs

Sainsbury's have the worst self-service checkouts IMO

I thought Sainsbury's branded themselves as one of the 'better' supermarkets but the self-service checkouts at my local store are awful. They constantly find faults, and require checking by an assistant because the computer isn't weighing things correctly or god knows what.

Then when you try to leave, you are locked in and have to scan your receipt - which you weren't told to do at the start, so if you haven't printed a receipt you have an akward argument with the assistant, trying to prove you did pay actually, and who hates you because they have already been over to enter their pin number sixteen times at your checkout!

I just don't go in to Sainsury's anymore! I'd rather spend my life savings in Waitrose, keep my dignity, and not be treated like a criminal

Their self checkouts are the worst.
I only go there now if I have to.
Such a waste of time and not enough staff who care enough to help at the self checkouts

Do I want to ask?

Vacuum packed. Gives it a clumpy texture!

As you can tell from my name, I do online shopping for the big shop. But top ups, I go and get a self-scan gun. Scan and bag, go through the specific set of tills for scan and go (rarely a queue), scan my receipt and go. Easy!

Does yours have scan and go, @Pickupapen ?

This exactly.

Scan and go is so quick and simple.

captureitrememberit · 08/03/2025 19:16

I don't really understand why people don't use scan and go. It's so much easier and quicker to scan and bag as you go round, use the self scan tills and then leave. I would never want to go back to having to put my entire trolley onto the checkout and then repack it.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 08/03/2025 19:17

Oh it’s nice that they’re making shopping even more irritating. We appreciate it.

My gripe is how s l o w it is in my local Tesco to self scan anything. I assume it’s to reduce the ability to steal stuff, but it is so painful.

Strumpetpumpet · 08/03/2025 19:19

I hate self checkouts. I have arthritis in my hands and am really cack-handed. Whenever I’m forced to use self checkouts out for more than one or two items I really struggle, and invariably drop something

Use the manned checkouts and avoid putting people out of a job?

Its the decision that supermarkets have made to put in self service checkouts that have forced people out of a job, not the people forced to use them.

Not quite as bad as I thought!

I have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever bought mince from my local Sainsbury’s. I shall have to take a look next time I’m in there.

rwalker · 08/03/2025 19:50

got Caught out once the first time I used them and wasn’t aware
Now non issue

I don’t have that long to wait around. I get what you are saying about making a point but that ship has sailed in my view and I’m not going to massively inconvenience myself plus make some poor member of staff’s life much harder to make a point.

I respect that you are still trying, though.

This might actually be the hill that I die on.

I do the Big Shop at a time when there's not always a checkout open and they were clearly having staffing problems. I asked them to open a checkout for me and my massive trolley-full and they said they didn't have the staff and I'd have to self scan.

It was bloody awful, even the trolley self-scan didn't have enough space for all my shopping and it kept glitching about whether I'd put my stuff in the bags when I tried to make room.

Anyway, the assistant asked me to make a complaint because they were fed up of not having enough staff, so I wrote a really scathing email and got a reply back about how there should always be a checkout open.

Since then staffing seems to be better and while there's not always a checkout open they will open one quickly when I ask.

The staff are always young college or uni students and I think it's really bad that these types of jobs that I'm sure many of us did when we were young are being shut off to them.

Where in the country are these gates, I've never seen them

WGC and Hertford for a start

PrincessAnne5Eva · 08/03/2025 19:56

At my local Sainsbury's they close the checkouts at 7pm. I was in there with a massive overflowing trolley ready to pay at 7:10pm and they forced me to use the self serve which doesn't have a conveyor or anything. I almost walked out and left the trolley I was so frustrated, it took me 40 minutes to scan everything and there wasn't enough room on the bagging area to put it all which massively added to the faff. Total clusterfuck. It was the first and last time I'll ever use Sainsbury's.

BobnLen · 08/03/2025 19:57

I only shop at Sainsbury's online as they kindly offer 50p slots sometimes and I got a free slot this week, I find the delivery drivers are much more helpful than store staff. I wouldn't go in the shop because I can't be bothered and it all sounds tedious. I get top up shops from Waitrose and M&S as they are nicer.

Printedword · 08/03/2025 20:00

One things that irks me at the local big Sainsburys is the way you don't get prompted to add your bags so you end up piling it all in the bagging area and then bagging it back in the trolley.

The smaller Sainsburys has a weird little scale like thing that's the bagging area, it's right in front rather than at the side and - unless you only have a few square and small things - they fall off the sides

Cloudyvibes · 08/03/2025 20:01

Stopped using Sainsbury’s about a month ago when I got stuck in the gated area by the tills. I tried scanning my receipt more than once but it wouldn’t let me out, 2 members of staff stood chatting watched the whole thing and didn’t come over until I shouted over to them. Never again. Sounds crazy but I felt very confined in the area and was a bit panicked.

Does this work? Not a very good security measure if just anyone can shove through.

They aren’t like the lighter entry gates (or is it just the Sainsbury’s I was in has a bigger shoplifting problem and more security?).

Printedword · 08/03/2025 20:09

Oh and another thing is if you buy any clothing it doesn't prompt the staff to deactivate the tag for you. I bought some socks and as I exited the shop the wheel jammer came on. You would think someone would rush over, wouldn't you, but I waited about 5 mins bang in the middle. Talk about embarrassing argh.

lyricalwindmills · 08/03/2025 20:12

I stopped going to Sainsbury's after I had a terrible experience at the self scanners. I was carrying my feverish 2-year-old who was clinging to me as he was pretty ill, and was buying Calpol (and only Calpol). My self scanner detected a paracetamol product and the red light came on, which was followed in turn by every single other of the self scanners in the bank.

When a cashier eventually sauntered over to help, she served every single other customer before me, as if I was invisible, despite someone telling her I had been first. All while I was standing there holding my kid and asking her directly for help. She just completely ignored me. I'm not sure if she was trying to make a point or was just on another planet but I was so angry I've never gone back to that store.

My Sainsbury’s is hell on earth at the best of times. We have multiple ‘receipt gates’ to exit but they get broken on average once a week so they’re not usually an issue.

At least one third of the self service checkouts are out of service and the remainder are usually filthy. But at least they updated the screens in the past year as prior to that, most of the touchscreens were knackered so it took forever to press the button to pay. The whole supermarket looks like it needs a good scrub clean and some serious maintenance.

I worked in Argos (which is owned by Sainsbury’s) til recently and our colleague toilets had mushrooms growing from behind them and the whole place was disgusting.
These million pound corporations don’t want to spend a penny of their profits.

HeyDoodie · 08/03/2025 20:20

I was at Waitrose early this morning. Non of the tills were staffed and there was only cashless self service so I stood there like a right lemon for a good while

Dougt · 08/03/2025 20:23

YANBU. Our local big Sainsbury’s checkout set up is appalling. Aldi is 100% better.
The self checkouts are often manned by tired and worn down older women who must absolutely hate their jobs because they constantly have to deal with mildly to majorly annoyed customers and trudge up and down a stupidly long line of self checkouts, I feel so sorry for them. I always need them for something even though I rarely if ever buy booze these days (annoying even the AF stuff needs age verification). Sainsbury’s show such contempt for their staff and customers these days. I agree with you, after my last experience I’m just going to do Waitrose and Aldi.

HelenWheels · 08/03/2025 20:29

i dont think i have seen a receipt exit

comoatoupeira · 08/03/2025 20:30

This is why I love Waitrose. It’s always possible to go to a real till and they are always really nice about it. Doesn’t feel like your doing something wacky!
