Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 15:35

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

I would eat it!

How some people see a lovely kid gesture……

Sad to live like that.

*kind

Poppyseeds79 · 08/03/2025 20:04

I'd absolutely eat it! But then again I ate a muffin I dropped on the train floor a few weeks ago too 😅

(Didn't die from it)

GoldOP · 08/03/2025 20:11

If she knows you I don’t see the issue but if she doesn’t I get her point. Sometimes people bring homemade stuff into work and have to admit I eat it if I trust the bakers hygiene and steer clear if not!

NiftyKoala · 08/03/2025 20:12

Personally OP I'd love it. I love love love food gifts.

lemontova · 08/03/2025 20:16

I think that all sounds lovely, just go for it and if anyone doesn’t want to eat them they won’t.

AuntyHumperdink · 08/03/2025 20:20

If they look good I’ll eat them, it’s never that deep.

anon666 · 08/03/2025 20:33

Why bother, if she's going to be like that? You can buy baked goods for next to nothing. They won't be as nice, but it sounds like they won't be appreciated anyway.

Save your energy!

And I would love homemade stuff but am completely un-germphobic.

LoraNorder · 08/03/2025 20:47

I'd love it if- it's probably going to taste a million times better than chemical-laden shop-bought stuff.

TheMauveBeaker · 08/03/2025 21:04

I’d eat it. Shop cakes taste like cotton wool.

JimJamJim · 08/03/2025 21:10

We went to a wedding recently that was entirely catered in a “pot luck” style by family and friends. Very diverse range of people attending and not one seemed to have a problem tucking into homemade goods.

Yes. I make one comment about care packages on a thread about care packages which, of course, means I live my life like that: thinking about care packages.
And your passive aggressive use of ‘sad’ 🙄 Did you have your head tilted to one side as you typed it while emitting a baffled little sigh wondering why we are not all as sweet as you?🤣

Mecheng2 · 08/03/2025 21:18

Much rather eat a home baked option than any ultra processed food crap

OneTC · 08/03/2025 21:25

It's not normal to reject brownies

PrimitivePerson · 08/03/2025 21:29

All the people scared of food poisoning - stop being so paranoid. I'm 50, and have only, with any certainty, had food poisoning once, which I'm almost certain came from a dodgy McDonald's.

I've eaten all sorts of stuff that may or may not have come from iffy sources, and it's never made me ill.

Airspice · 08/03/2025 21:33

i wouldn’t think twice about eating it and am surprised that so many of you are saying they wouldn’t!

Turquoise123 · 08/03/2025 21:59

Tbh not sure I really understand this - if people would not eat the brownies then will they not eat at the wedding at all - seems very odd ? I would love the brownies and a lovely thought

Ketzele · 08/03/2025 22:41

I think the brownies sound lovely, OP. I would be thrilled with them, and the gift box.

I thought I was a squeamish person before encountering Mumsnet. The collective grossed out-ness at the realities of everyday life is quite something to behold!

Seems they’ll only eat the catered food as long as they can see a certified copy of the hygiene credentials and personally examine the kitchen beforehand otherwise they’d rather starve

Daftypants · 08/03/2025 22:48

I’d eat them 😋
I think if you make a little label saying if the brownies are free of nuts , gluten , dairy , egg , whatever then the guests can choose whether to eat them or not .
I myself have traditional brownie recipes plus vegan and GF recipes too

DarkMagicStars · 08/03/2025 23:03

Waste of time and money.
I wouldn’t eat them. Intolerances and some people live in filth.

It's not a fear of illness. No one has suggested that except the "i'll eat anything from anywhere" ilk.

One can decline food for reasons other than fearing illness or death. I don't think toddler snot, pet feces or the fecal bacteria under some slob's fingernail extension are going to kill me. But I still don't care to eat them.

That's quite some acquaintance you have if you think that that's a possibility.

Lyraloo · 08/03/2025 23:09

She’s being silly along with all the people on here that say they wouldn’t eat it. The vast majority of wedding cakes are baked by family, friends or people who bake at home, and everyone happily eats those.

people eat out more than ever these days and the lack of hygiene even in the best of kitchens would shock people. Do they think that every employer is able to check if someone has washed their hands after the loo, not mishandled or stored food incorrectly, etc, etc.

I wouldn’t want to ruin my appetite for wedding banquet and goodies by snaffling brownie in my hotel bedroom.

each to their own

You wouldn’t want to ruin your appetite by eating a brownie fhe night before? Ok.

So many nutso germophobes on this thread.
