Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 15:35

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

I think it's because a willingness to eat a homemade brownie doesn't equate to being willing to 'gobble anything'.

Eating does not = gobbling (unless you have disordered thinking around food).

There is a whole world of food I choose not to consume. I don't place a value judgment on people who choose to consume it.

You must have a very small little life, based on your postings on this thread, which is your choice, but others don't have to tell you it's normal.

I think that’s exactly what poor old Betty has. She’s posting using these sneering terms to elevate herself and convince herself she’s definitely not the one with the problem. 😬 Sorry pal.

Is there anything sadder in life than the supermarket mass-produced scone? How do they manage to make them so utterly inedible when a fresh, homemade scone is a wonder to behold!

The supermarket scone embodies all that is wrong in commercially produced food. Home baking is ALWAYS better than shop bought. There is no way I’d waste calories on shop bought cake.

PrimitivePerson · 10/03/2025 00:52

Yeah, I'm getting the impression there's some serious issue with food there, possibly orthorexia, an obsession with eating healthy food. It certainly explains the attitude that anyone eating homemade cakes is some sort of disgusting slob.

I do love Pringles, always have since childhood. We gobbled down half a tube this weekend.

How many people shared half a tube of Pringles?

Pot luck dinner parties are where everyone brings a dish to share I believe.

What kinds of people do some posters associate with that they are so scared of home-made food?! Get cleaner friends!

These days it’s a luxury to get home-made food.

Some people here are soooo uptight. They probably only holiday in place that serve fish and chips, and are terrified of ‘foreign muck’ too.

And ‘ a cake made by a random school mum without accreditation’ is my favourite comment on this thread.

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 07/03/2025 16:10

Nope.
I wouldn't eat anything made in someone else's house.

Have you ever seen threads on here where people announce they don't wash their hands after peeing (because 'sterile' 😄) or after changing a kids shitty nappy?
and for all the other reasons posters have already written.

Does that include an invitation to dinner at someone else's house?

What hogwash. Our lives aren't restricted at all.

Illness and poisoning aren't a concern, as I have stated before. Aesthetics are.

I'm never desperate enough for a biscuit or brownie that I'd eat any old thing some rando plopped into a sack and left in my hotel room.

Are you raising children this way? To reject any home-made food? Be careful. When they get to uni etc they may find life restrictive and challenging.

My SO and I, why?

I can remember visiting my parents when Pringles first were sold, many years ago, and a tube would last the four of us the weekend. They aren't like popcorn where one can just eat and eat it.

I think there must be disordered eating going on, if you read between the lines.

BettyBardMacDonald · 10/03/2025 10:49

Yes, @Peppercorncrunch, we enjoyed the cakes because I know the hygiene of the person who baked them. They weren't left on our bed in a hotel room by some random.

My DD loves baking and makes great cakes and brownies. She took some home made cookies to uni when she started and they were well received.
(We do have cats at home but they are rarely in the kitchen when we are baking and of course never on any food prep surfaces)

Ooo, I quite like the word "gobbling." It reminds me of the hobbits from Lord of the Rings for some reason. 'Elevensies' anyone? I think I'll have a brownie! 😂

the OP is not a random.

Some people have genuine OCD and need treatment. The other posters need to get a grip. This kind of stuff makes me think society now is sick and neurotic. Humans have developed defence systems. We live in the uk. You are unlikely to get sick from eating a home-made brownie. Get over it.

KimberleyClark · 10/03/2025 11:09

Of course not. How do some people manage to live?
