beavers being rereleased in the uk - why? They are territorial animals and don’t really have a place in our carefully balanced ecosystem.

This is definitely the terribly tedious buffalo poster.

NoraLuka · 07/03/2025 15:08

I live in a country where wolves are coming back. Fancy a swap, OP?

Name a single pro of allowing beavers into the wild. I will wait. But as I’ve said it’s all part of something different anyway so it doesn’t matter if they’ve managed to fool you!

Historically river courses have been straightened, for agriculture, development and aesthetics. Straighter rivers run faster, and with more force than rivers which meander, which leads to flooding, and has caused massive habitat loss.

It’s not a challenging concept that REintroducing a species that creates wetlands and slows and changes the flow of water courses could be a good thing for undoing some of the damage we have caused.

I have never posted about buffalo before but have spoken at length about bison if that is what you are referring to.

FuzzyPuffling · 07/03/2025 15:09

What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

You can't wash your hands in a buffalo.

LemaLemons · 07/03/2025 15:09

To those who want to know yes I do have a keen interest in reintroduction of species because I don’t think we should play god and think there is a really serious problem with these people who claim to be good and time and time again attempt to reintroduce and rewild creatures that should not be reintroduced or rewilded

We don't have a carefully planned ecosystem. It's impossible because it is managed by humans. The last time I checked we'd lost 60% of the country's ecosystems and it was the worst in europe. Europe doesn't do much better

BloominNora · 07/03/2025 15:10

YABU - Beavers are a keystone species.

The damns and canals they build to get around help prevent flooding, their use of dead wood to build the damns creates really healthy habits for other species to thrive.

They don't over breed at the rates of rabbits or cats - they live in monogamous pairs and generally only breed once a year with a small litter of up to three kits.

And they are incredibly cute!

And what about the beaver on child violence risks?

Beavers will br essential for re-balancing climate change by uniting sons of Adam and daughters of Eve with Aslan to end the forecast permafrost caused by realignment of the Gulf Stream.

Cherrysoup · 07/03/2025 15:13

And if you follow any farming websites, those in Scotland are already saying the dams cause arable fields to flood and the beavers divert water to the 'wrong' place. I don't think people having to remove dams because their wheat fields are flooded is ideal.

NotCamping · 07/03/2025 15:13

What exactly is the point of these posts? They aren’t even funny just tedious and bizarre.

The Scouting leaders usually have a two strikes and you miss a week policy for disruptive behaviour.

fetcosts · 07/03/2025 15:14

I’m just worried about someone deciding that XL beavers would be a good idea if they are as much of a danger to kids as OP believes. They would be a real status symbol though 😂

LemaLemons · 07/03/2025 15:11

And what about the beaver on child violence risks?

Beavers don't even make the top 100 things I'm worried about.

The list is headed by

  1. Men
  2. Other adults
  3. Cars.
  4. Dog
  5. Social media
  6. Other children

I think beavers are below alien abduction and solar flares

LemaLemons · 07/03/2025 15:11

And what about the beaver on child violence risks?

I heard the reverse - that they take children into their lodge, shelter them from the White Witch and assist them in finding Aslan

Renamed · 07/03/2025 15:16

Can we not do an opinion poll or at least a voxpop of some beavers and find out their intentions?

They might be all aligned with one particular party, in which case releasing them in targeted constituencies would amount to electoral interference

FuzzyPuffling · 07/03/2025 15:16

Beaver on child violence???

  1. What evidence have you that this has ever happened?
  2. Keep your children away from the beavers.

No worse than Brownies as far as I’m concerned and we aren’t trying to ban them. And scouts. Oh and the legion of Mary - absolute terrors.

BloominNora · 07/03/2025 15:20

LemaLemons · 07/03/2025 15:11

And what about the beaver on child violence risks?

😂😂😂

That's brilliant!

But on the off chance you are a genuine tin-foil hat wearing beaver hater...

Given there aren't any beaver on child violence risks I can't say it is something I'm going to worry about.

Every single example in the wiki article you posted was from people and dogs disturbing the beavers and / or rabies - the first is just desserts, the second isn't an issue in the UK.

Children are much more likely to suffer violence from dogs, cars, adults and each other...come to think about it - maybe we should send children to be brought up by the beavers away from dogs, cars and adults - they'd probably be safer!

Iamnotalemming · 07/03/2025 15:21

We need @BoiledBeetle to do us a picture of a buffalo negotiating with a beaver please

TIA! 🦫

I was once fooled by a beaver, never again! I asked her what her intentions were and she told me a bare-faced lie.
